Would you assume that someone who named their kid Brandy was an alcoholic

I’m starting to catch feelings for the name Brandy but I don’t drink and I wonder if the reputation is not great due to that?

Would you assume someone named Brandy had alcoholic parents?
  • Yes I would
  • No I wouldn’t
  • I wouldn’t but I wouldn’t recommend using it
  • It would depend on spelling - Brandy with a y yes Brandi with an I no
  • It would depend on spelling Brandi with an I yes Brandy with a Y no.

I would definitely not think that. The association isn’t one I like, but there are plenty of Brandys out there!

From my experience, most alcoholics try to hide the fact that they’re an alcoholic (not all of them tho, ofc), so I can’t imagine one naming their kid Brandy. Lots of girls named [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] out there, I don’t even really associate it with alcohol at this point!

I named my son [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] and it wasn’t because I liked the whiskey. I don’t think people would make the association with that. I would only find it weird if someone named all of their children after drinks, for example if you had three kids and they were Brandy, Margarita, and Martini.

As long as all your kids aren’t named after drinks I wouldn’t think anything of it! I once had a customer tell me how she named all her kids after what she was drinking when they were conceived. . . One was [name_f]Tequila[/name_f] lol

I was in class with a girl [name_f]Brandi[/name_f] growing up and never made that association. I always thought her name gave off a [name_f]Bindi[/name_f] [name_m]Irwin[/name_m] type of vibe.

I think at this point it’s a name in its own right— I think of the singer before the drink. There are other alcohols that would otherwise sound nice as names that give me pause— Chardonnay, Sangria, Martini, Mimosa— but I think you’re in the clear with Brandy.

It was a popular name in the 80’s and 90’s

As others have said, I definitely wouldn’t! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if someone named their child after a specific brand of alcohol I wouldn’t assume that the parents are alcoholics. It even took me a second to figure out the connection, but that might be because I’m not of drinking age

I’ve known too many Brandy’s, I feel like the association with the drink has been diluted enough that wouldn’t be most people’s first thought

No. I don’t associate the name of a person with the name of the drink.

I think [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] is a well known enough name, I don’t think it would get associated with alcohol. maybe other less common alcoholic names, but I can’t see [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] that way. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought would actually be that maybe the parents were fans of the actress/singer, Brandy!

I wouldn’t think that at all. [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] was a fairly popular name around the 70s/80s, wasn’t it?

Methinks it feels slightly yee-haw (in a great way)

I think [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] is fine. I would assume the parent just liked the sound

I’ve met multiple Brandy’s / Brandi’s and never once had this thought. I understand the worry, but I just don’t think it’s a problem :two_hearts:

The thought would’ve never crossed my mind. I’d assume they just liked the name or maybe the singer Brandy.

Honestly, I think it’s been used enough, that the connotations aren’t really there. Go for it!

I definitely would not assume that the name was related to alcoholism. I personally would stay away from using it anyway though, as I think of it as a dated name from the 1980s that would look out of place on a child born nowadays (though this may or may not be the case where you live).

I voted I wouldn’t but I wouldn’t recommend using the name not because of any connection to alcoholism but because personally I’m not a massive fan of the name and I could see teasing potential as a result of being so closely associated with brandy the alcoholic beverage
