My surname is a very common and widely used word. I don’t plan on ever getting married and, if I do, I won’t change my surname. Because of this, should I avoid word names? For example, some of my favourites sound like descriptions or something romantic and sweet, lol.
Below are the word names on my shortlist right now:
[name_m]Just[/name_m] to clarify, is [name_u]Love[/name_u] your last name?
If so, I think a word name might be a bit too much. [name_u]Love[/name_u] is probably even harder than a normal word name to pair with another word it really implies a pretty big fondness for that thing
Honestly I don’t think those are bad at all. They don’t sound bad and I don’t think you should ditch them! Except for perhaps [name_u]Story[/name_u]. Something about [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u] just isn’t sitting right? But the rest are good to go!
I do think most of them sound too wordy with [name_u]Love[/name_u] as a last name (it’s a lovely last name, though), quite a few of them sound more like a stage name, actually and should your children ever do something artistic, if their name was something like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] would make an awesome stage name.
I think the one combo that really doesn’t work, is [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u], it’s basically [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Story[/name_u] in reverse and just a bit cheesy.
See I get where you’re coming from our surname is
D A R L I N G
And it is difficult to pair with word names, though I think [name_u]Love[/name_u] is way more tricky, but not as bad as a verb surname that a poster was discussing the other day about.
I agree with pp [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u] doesn’t flow well at all, but [name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] doesn’t sound bad as it’s a widely accepted name.
Thank you guys, I have [name_u]Story[/name_u] on my short list mainly as a middle name, but I don’t want to make it cheesy so I might scrap it or just dream.
@geeknamer, so your daughter is T.h.e.a S.n.o.w D.a.r.l.i.n.g? [name_m]How[/name_m] beautiful!!!
I think it’s fine as long as the first name doesn’t make it too much like a common phrase (like [name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_m]Young[/name_m] [name_u]Love[/name_u], etc.). I agree that [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u] is pushing it a bit in that regard but the rest sound fine.
I have often said that a couple should use the better sounding of the 2 surnames. If that is unpopular, then a combination of the 2 as a single last name, NOT HYPHENATED. I only know of one couple where HE took HER last name, a wise choice because hers was beautiful.
But what bothers me here is that you don’t want anything to do with his name at all, not even for the children. In other words, he is to be a sperm donor only?? You do have a wonderful name, so maybe he would be willing to take your name as his own. What if his surname is [name_u]Story[/name_u]? You could be Mr. and Mrs. Lovestory.
What if he agrees to “[name_u]Love[/name_u]” but wants you to name a girl after his mother? LOL Men can have naming opinions too.
I agree with @alfiee - as long as the two words don’t make a phrase when combined, it shouldn’t be a problem. My own name is actually two words (well, different spellings but same pronunciation) but since they don’t really mean anything together, no one has ever pointed it out hahaha.
I did consider this a lot in the past, back when I dated a guy with a wordy surname. Personally I wouldn’t use anything that make the combo sound like a description or names in the same category (e.g., both fn and ln are virtue names, nature names, etc). Most names on your list are fine, imo, except [name_u]Story[/name_u].
She has a second middle name which is my maiden name, because unless my brother has a son the name will disappear, but it’s not pretty and completely throws the flow but it was important to me.
I think you run the risk of making your child’s name sound like a candle scent or stage name, but it can be pulled off. I like [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] with [name_u]Love[/name_u].
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_u]Fable[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] I think this is fine.
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_f]Reverie[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]. I think this is fine.
[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_m]Archer[/name_m] [name_u]Love[/name_u] I think this is fine.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
The rest I would probably personally not use.
I think if you used less used words, like with [name_f]Reverie[/name_f] and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f].
Like [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] or [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] [name_u]Love[/name_u].
I also like three syllables with it.
I have this exact same problem. My boyfriends surname is Gr33n, so a lot of word names sounds like description and not a name such as [name_u]Winter[/name_u] Gr33n.
That being said, most of your names I think are pretty usable. Like pp said [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u] is a little too much, but the others one would be lovely choices one day.
I personally think you’re looking into that too much. I’m only nineteen, and I’m never going to be married (I say this, it could change), and I want to continue my surname because every single [name_u]Love[/name_u] in my generation are female who will most likely be married and take on a different surname, so it’ll die out, and I don’t want that whatsoever. If the future father cannot handle that, then he may put his surname as the child’s second middle (within reason), but it’s important to me.
Anyway, thank you all. I’ve decided to go put them all in the middle spot because of this.
