Would you comment? I am interested in Berries thoughts on this one.

After discussing the name [name_m]Tremayne[/name_m], which has been taken from the Cornish surname [name_m]Tremaine[/name_m], I wanted to ask Berries reaction to this name.
I am not considering this for a daughters name. I know a young woman with this name and so does another participant (know 1 person). We established that it’s not the same person. She said she thought the name was made up until I mentioned the Cornish surname, but it still is altered.
I know surnames are not most people’s taste but this seems different because it is a name already in use and existence. Would you feel you had to change it or find a nick name? My thoughts are ambivalent right now. Having lived some time in Cornwall - the opinion is that it’s really only a surname, but on the other hand it’s not sounding that bad away from that environment. I am trying to stand back and take away any ‘rules’ or preferences I have for naming a new baby. WDYT?

I don’t see an issue. It’s a nice name + you have the nickname [name_m]Trey[/name_m].

@wittyusername103-thank you for your comment. I gather you are familiar with the name?
I was talking to a group of people who have never heard of it.

Pros) I like it as a middle name - I almost think I like the original better though - [name_m]Tremaine[/name_m] - maybe because I liked the book “[name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Tremain” when I was young! I think something like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_m]Tremaine[/name_m] sounds quite handsome & I like that it has the Cornish connection for you.
Cons) I’m not big on the nickname “[name_m]Tre[/name_m] (tree)” which seems like it would be most likely if a first name, maybe…and it reminds me a little of the male name [name_u]Jermaine[/name_u]/[name_u]Germaine[/name_u] which is not a plus because it sounds dated to me. Lastly it’s the name of [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f]'s wicked stepmother which could make a Disney-loving child unhappy. (?)

Thanks @peanut for commenting. I felt a tad silly I meant to say -not that I did not know the name rather I knew only one woman with the name. Any google searches etc people did, still only brought up [name_m]Tremayne[/name_m] as a male name -The spelling does not seem important just the same sound. My grandmother had her school books by [name_m]John[/name_m] Tremain too. I am not sure I have that spelling right.
In the discussion -there seemed some innuendo that it was a name like we’d say “Oh don’t use that - it just makes me think of …” but nobody seemed to know exactly what.
I realized I have never seen it on Nameberry and got curious.

I am personally not a fan of surname names but I think it’s usable
However I think it could sound a little pretentious if used on a boy in the US. Less so on a girl

I only lile the original spelling, tremaine. But its pretty. You can use the nicknames trip and trey as well!

I like it a lot ” definitely feels more masculine to me, and even if they aren’t my personal favourite style of names I still think there’s a lot to be said for surname names and there are some I’d consider using (although thats just me, if surname names are your style go for it!!!) I honeslty don’t think theres any belief that you can’t use a traditional surname as a first these days ”

I’d find the [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] reference a bit off putting but I’m a massive Disney nerd, unless you watch [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] every weekend and will do for the next ten years I don’t see why it would be a problem x

As I said initially I am not remotely thinking of using this name for a child which is not a reflection oh how I feel about the name. I know a woman, but only one, with this name and was just wanting, out of curiosity how Berries think about [name_m]Tremayne[/name_m] as a name. It struck me that its not used anywhere on Nameberry. Thanks to those who have replied-I am sort of feeling there is something I am missing, sorry.
