Would you give your daughter an 'OLD WOMAN' name?

I’m not talking about the cute, semi-trendy ones that have come back into style like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. I’m talking about stereotypically granny names like [name_f]Hildegarde[/name_f] and [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f].

Asking this because I’ve been crushing on [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] for a while now and was wondering if anyone else shared the same sort of style.

Ehhh, depends. I’d use [name_f]Edith[/name_f].

[name_f]Griselda[/name_f] is not an only lady name to me, but I do think it’s a little rough sounding. It sounds like grizzly, grizzled, grey. I do think its cool though.

Names like [name_f]Hildegarde[/name_f] and [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] sound like they belong in a medieval [name_m]German[/name_m] village to me, so I wouldn’t exactly call them granny names. :stuck_out_tongue: Personally I find them a bit much, but if that’s your style then more power to you.

To answer the title of your thread: heck yes I would (and I am)! And I might be in the minority here, but I think [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] is pretty friggin awesome. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] or [name_f]Zella[/name_f] could be nicknames if you’re into nicknames.

[name_f]Gisele[/name_f] could be an alternative, if you were trying to avoid the old lady vibe.

And to answer this part, kooky old lady is my absolute favorite style of name

I second that [name_f]Hildegarde[/name_f] and [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] sound like they belong in a medieval [name_m]German[/name_m] village, and so I wouldn’t class them as old lady names. The name [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] also reminds me of [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] [name_m]Blanco[/name_m], who was a drug lord in the Medellín Cartel, and who was assassinated three years ago.

I find these sort of names too heavy for a child to wear.

Absolutely! They’re my favourite type of names.

I have plenty of friends (teenagers and older) who have old lady names and are perfectly well rounded and ‘normal’ people. [name_f]Hilda[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], [name_f]Trudie[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. It’s very common in the UK, I don’t know why Nameberry make such a fuss over old fashioned names! They’re very trendy.

It depends on the name. I do like many of the trendy old lady names such as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I do not like [name_f]Hildegard[/name_f], [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f], or [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] though. I also agree with the medieval [name_m]German[/name_m] village thing that a couple posters have brought up. I don’t know any grandma named [name_f]Hildegard[/name_f] or [name_f]Griselda[/name_f]. I’ve probably met a [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] or two but I don’t specifically remember any. Actually, when I think of [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] I think of the bratty little girl from [name_f]Lilo[/name_f] and Stitch. The grandma names where I’m from are like [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] (not a fan), [name_f]Carol[/name_f] (possibly as a middle), [name_f]Lorna[/name_f] (actually pretty cute), and [name_f]Donna[/name_f] (know a teen named this as well).

I’m not a fan of ‘old lady names’ and the only one I’d consider is [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] would go down too well - personally I’d find it to be a little embarrassing, though that’s fine for middle names I guess - the majority of people are embarrassed by their middle names.

I love [name_f]Hildegarde[/name_f] and [name_f]Griselda[/name_f]! I think they are beautiful and would totally name a little girl one of those names…if I could get it past the husband, which is very doubtful.

I love Old Lady names. I’d say almost all my top choices at the moment are Old Lady names: [name_f]Maud[/name_f], [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f]
Ones that aren’t on our list, for various reasons, that I still love: [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Muriel[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], etc.

I’m not crazy about [name_f]Griselda[/name_f], because it reminds me of gristle or grizzly, but there’s nothing wrong with the “age” of it. I like [name_f]Giselle[/name_f]/[name_f]Gisele[/name_f] though.

The old ladies I know, or knew, are [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_u]Joyce[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], Etc - darn tootin I would use them.

I’d absolutely use [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Edna[/name_f], [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], etc. I actually know three teenage girls called [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and [name_f]Edna[/name_f], none struggle with their names!

I would use the name [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], but DH doesn’t like it. Old lady names/ vintage names are the trend right now. So yeah, a lot of couples are using them.

Hell, yeah!

They are great names full of character and beat [name_f]Moesha[/name_f], [name_f]Pixie[/name_f], and [name_u]Londyn[/name_u] all over town.

There are VERY few granny names that I even like. Names like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f], and [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] I would never ever use. They are a little too old fashioned for me.

Depends on the name.

Really depends on the name but I think [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] could be wearable, especially with a nickname like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] or Zelly

One my my all-time favourites is [name_f]Ethel[/name_f]. The only problem I have with it is my [name_m]French[/name_m] family can’t pronounce it (becomes eh-TELL)! I’m still considering it for a middle spot.

The other name high on my list is [name_f]Irene[/name_f]. Both the English [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and the [name_m]French[/name_m] Irène (ee-[name_u]REN[/name_u]) are acceptable to me - and this is despite knowing some pretty awful old Irenes in my life.

One name I really enjoy is [name_f]Helga[/name_f], and I also like [name_f]Olga[/name_f]. I think there is something that could be sophisticated about [name_f]Olga[/name_f]. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] wouldn’t think twice about falling for a femme fatale with that name, you know?

Honestly, now that [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f] are acceptable, there is nothing holding us back. Not only has Hildegaard been considered, it’s on my list somewhere in the middle. [name_m]How[/name_m] could anyone not like the nickname [name_f]Hildy[/name_f] or [name_f]Hildie[/name_f]? It’s so cute! I love it because Hildegaard of Bingen wrote some of my favourite passages in all of literature.

You know what? I wouldn’t use every name. Here’s a name I really, really like, and I have a crush on, but I would not be able to give it to my daughter: [name_f]Beulah[/name_f]. I would sooner name her [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] to avoid the bad reactions to the name - and I don’t even like the name [name_f]Bertha[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] sounds pretty because it has the same beginning as “beautiful”, then a nice little musical “lah” to end it! I’d call her “Beautiful [name_f]Beulah[/name_f]!” I also think it sounds southern, like [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]. And still, I wouldn’t use it. :frowning:

I don’t know. There’s some “dated” names I like such as [name_f]Christine[/name_f] and [name_f]Theresa[/name_f], but I wouldn’t use [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f], [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Bertha[/name_f]…you get the picture. Honestly, [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] doesn’t seem that much like an old lady name to me. In fact, I can definitely picture it on a young girl.
