Would you name your kid this?

I work in the ER and ran across a little girl named Harlequin the other day. Like the clowns. And the romance novels. I mean, it sounds ok to the ear but if you spend some time researching the meaning of the word Harlequinand the history behind it, it seems a little odd that someone would use this name. I was just wondering if anyone else would even consider this. Also, are there any strange names you have run across that make you go huh??? Another one I’ve seen recently is a little boy named [name]Howard[/name], which I do think is kind of cute actually. Takes a certain kind of kid to carry that name though.

Too bad about Harlequin. It does have a nice ring to it. Sounds trendy and usable, with a lot of NN potential. I would never use it though.

[name]Howard[/name] is ok, reminds me of The Big Bang [name]Theory[/name] though.

I haven’t heard any odd names lately.

Not Harlequin :/. Lol

Eisleigh is the name of a little girl I know

I have to admit, I see how Harlequin has a nice sound, but there’s a syndrome of some sort, I think, called Harlequin (or harlequinism) and it’s pretty jarring to see so that puts it firmly in the “Not even as a GP” category for me.

[name]Howard[/name] is kind of cute. I actually met a guy in med school 2 winters ago named [name]Howard[/name]. He was really sweet, very handsome and I was just like, “… [name]Howard[/name], eh?” I don’t know, I’m torn.
On the note of old man names, I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Norman[/name]. I think it’s adorable! Everyone I mention it to is like, “[name]Lucy[/name], you’re nuts” though :frowning:

Wow, once I saw that name I immediately thought of romance novels, but that is because my mom was really into reading those when I was younger so I saw them around our house a lot. It has a somewhat nice sound, but I could never get over that association. I wonder if the parents knew about that.

Oh hell no. I would never name my kid that. No more than I’d name my kid after any other disease.

As for the name [name]Howard[/name] it’s like the name [name]Ethel[/name] for me, I actually quite like it, it has a good meaning. However, I’m not sure if it’ll make a come back because of the sound of the name.

No. I have another association too - Harlequin is a coat type for the breed of dog we have, so my mind immediately goes to that. I don’t think it’s a good name.

Exactly my thoughts. I can’t imagine that these parents don’t know about the associates as they are so strong and there are so many in our society but I can’t understand why they would choose that name. Maybe they liked [name]Harley[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name]? I have no idea.

[name]Howard[/name] is adorable!
