Would you rather: 2 middles names, double barrel first with one middle, or just keep it short and sweet with single first and one middle?
Me again with my questions for a hypothetical future third baby.
If/when we have another boy, I feel like there is a name we would already be content cementing as the name.
If we ever have a girl, [name_f]Etta[/name_f] seems like a likely option.
I’ve loved the combo [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (despite its similarity to [name_f]Etta[/name_f] James). It’s really just been playing on loop in my head and I can totally envision us having a daughter by that name some day.
I lovvvveeee saying [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] in full. I would also love to use my grandmother’s middle name [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] to honor her some day. I just don’t love it with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] the way I live [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. But if we only have one daughter I would hate to miss the opportunity to use it.
Could we double barrel and make [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] the first name and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] the middle?
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] do two middle names? [name_m]Or[/name_m] just keep it short and simple with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and skip the [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]?
It’s silly how many questions I have about a child who doesn’t exist yet.
I always prefer to keep things simple. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is so lovely! [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] kinda messes with the flow imo.
Personally, I really like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. I would probably call her [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] without it technically being a double barrel just in case she doesn’t want to go by both names. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] combo
I like the beauty and simplicity of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] personally but if adding the second middle gives the name more meaning to your family I think 2 middles would be cute too. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. Orrrrr… you could always keep the simple name but just call her pearl sometimes. You can tell her she is your special little pearl and do an ocean theme for her nursery
I generally prefer single first and one middle, but I actually think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is really sweet as a double name and I like the honor for your grandmother with [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] in the middle. Double first names can be a bit clunky for documentation (many official documents will smoosh to Ettajane in the US), but totally doable if you decide to go that direction.
I like both options! If you were to add [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], I think hyphenating would be a good idea. Etta-Jane [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] sounds lovely, if a little long, and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] by itself is simple, elegant, and sweet. I love the idea of just using [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] but calling her “my pearl” or something along those lines.
I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] (called [name_f]Etta[/name_f] Jane) is lovely!! I have two cousins with double-barreled FNs (non-hyphenated) who also have traditional, family-honoring middles, and it works really well!!
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is very beautiful, and I love her!!
If I had a one syllable, wordy last name, I would go:
Etta-Jane [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] X
Etta-Jane [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] X
Etta-Jane [name_f]Peggy[/name_f]
Etta-Jane [name_m]Pearlie[/name_m]
[name_m]Or[/name_m] you could change [name_f]Etta[/name_f] to [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and you’d have your nod to your grandmother in [name_f]Greta[/name_f] so no need for a middle unless wanted an extra name. Same for any other (short) [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] name that goes with [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
I think if you want people to use “Etta Jane” you should definitely go the hyphenated option. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend has an “Ella R0se” but because no hyphen, it’s really only her family that use the two names, and even then not so much. She says she regrets not hyphenating and insisting on double from the start (even if it then dropped off a little, easier then trying to “sell” later).
I would rather have a double barrel first name and then a singular middle name. But I guess it could also depend one which of the names I would be going by
I love two middles, so my preference is always two middles, unless there is a double barrel I’m super keen on. I don’t know that [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] work great in the same combo since they’re both so short… but I do think Etta-Jane [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] works ok. Would you be open to something that means “Pearl”? I first thought of [name_f]Perla[/name_f] but I don’t think that’s great with Etta…
[name_f]Lulit[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Peninnah[/name_f] are interesting and could work… I especially like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Lulit[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] “Etta Jane” or Etta-Jane [name_f]Lulit[/name_f]? I’m sure you could use any variant of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (Etta [name_f]Margot[/name_f] Jane?) too. [name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe even Greta/Margaret [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] to get you to [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and honor [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], if you’re wanting something simpler with only one middle.
Not that anyone is coming back to see this conclusion, but y’all. I was just looking at some genealogy stuff for fun, unrelated to names. I mentioned wanting to use [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] because it was my maiden grandmother’s middle name. [name_f]My[/name_f] maiden grandmother’s first name was Rhetta. I could totally use [name_f]Etta[/name_f] to honor her. Obviously One has a long e and the other a short e pronunciation, but I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] could work as an honor name for Rhetta, no?
