Writing inspired names for a girl?

I’m thinking it might be nice to look down this route for potential girl names. I have always been a writer, and it could be a fun tie-in for my child if they had a writing-inspired name. My only problem is, one of the natural places to look for such names would be classic literature (character names, for example). Yet, I am more into modern fiction - my favorite authors include [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Golden[/name_u] (Memoirs of a Geisha), [name_m]Michael[/name_m] [name_m]Crichton[/name_m] (Timeline, Jurassic [name_m]Park[/name_m]…), and absurdist comedy author [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_m]Moore[/name_m].

Can anyone think of some girl names that aren’t necessarily dependent on coming from literature greats like [name_u]Austen[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], or [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]?

I’m actually thinking of [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] for my child if it is a boy. As in [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m].

Other than the obvious [name_u]Austen[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], type names, have you considered character names instead of just author names. I always tell people that my [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] was from [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s [name_m]Web[/name_m]. I met an adorable little girl the other day names [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] ([name_f]Ann[/name_f]-Toe-Knee-ah) as in the book “My [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]”.

What about something like Wilde (as in [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde) or [name_f]Willa[/name_f] ([name_f]Willa[/name_f] Cather).

I’m thinking about character names, although some books lend themselves to this better than others. For Memoirs of a Geisha I couldn’t say, name my child “Chairman” (I suppose I could, but that’d be odd), or in some of [name_m]Moore[/name_m]'s novels a MC of his is named [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I see [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as more of a pet name as I have met many dogs by that name. So it’s kind of been a tough search!

Thanks for the idea!

You could use Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha. I think it’s very pretty. On the Japanese theme you could use [name_f]Sakura[/name_f], remember the blossom viewing parties they went to in the book?
Or on the general theme of books, why not [name_f]Paige[/name_f]?
Other Memoirs names that are maybe not so useable in [name_u]America[/name_u]/UK:
[name_f]Chiyo[/name_f]
Satsu
Mameha
Hatsumomo

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] I helped
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] xx

[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] (Clan of the Cave [name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_u]Jean[/name_u] Auel)
[name_f]Olga[/name_f] (The Grasshopper, Chekhov)
[name_f]Margarita[/name_f] (The Master and [name_f]Margarita[/name_f], Bulgakov)
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] (house of the Spirits, [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] Allende)
[name_u]Scout[/name_u] (To Kill a Mockingbird)

Are there any place names in these books? What about the publishing house used?

cassandrah: Sayuri and [name_f]Sakura[/name_f] are lovely. I’d consider them for middle names. Possibly [name_f]Chiyo[/name_f] in MN slot, too. [name_f]Paige[/name_f] is nice, but I don’t know if it’s quite something I can picture.

mimiottawa: [name_f]Ayla[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f], and [name_u]Scout[/name_u] are pretty.

jemama: Those are both good ideas. I’ll have to go through and see if any are usable sounding!

In terms of modern fiction are you into Murakami or maybe even Safran Foer? There are some AMAZING names in both of their works.
