Wyck?

I came across the name Wyck (Wick) and would love to hear some opinions! It makes me think of the first syllable in “wicked” and also of a lit candle. Kind of cool to my ears, but curious about what others would think…

Wow, this thread got buried. Guess nobody likes the name. :-/ I spotted it in some movie credits. Can’t remember the movie, but a ‘Wyck [name]Godfrey[/name]’ was listed. I really liked the name soon as I saw it.

Movie credits are so great for spotting interesting names!

I think there could be some teasing potential with Wyck, since it rhymes with dick and prick. There are other names that end with that sound, but the combination of the ending and the fact that it’s only one syllable make the association kind of strong in my mind. I think that it could make for an interesting middle name or an interesting nickname for something like Warwick.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me at all, it makes me think of the WIC program. And, as nono mentioned there is a lot of teasing potential.

Great points about the teasing. I hadn’t considered that. And good suggestion, nono, about it possibly being used as a nickname rather than a name itself.

I appreciate the replies!

I think it would be cute for a little boy with the name Wickham, a surname used in Pride and Prejudice, although the character isn’t very likeable. I think Wickham is adorable.

I agree about the teasing potential.

What about [name]Witt[/name]/[name]Whit[/name]? [name]Whitman[/name], Whitacker, [name]Whitley[/name], etc. In fact, with Whitacker you could use the nn Wick if you wanted to–maybe in the family only.

This is exactly what I thought – almost word for word actually. It does seem more like a nickname to me, not so much a full name, but it is a really cook nickname. And if it’s a nn in the true sense of nns (as in not used ALL the time), it seems like the teasing potential would be lessened.

And I also love watching movie credits!! I used to hate them, but now that I’m into names, my husband has to pull me away from them. Really fascinating stuff!

freehal - Indeed, Wickham does have a wonderful sound… but as you mentioned, the P&P character does rather put a damper on it.

cathyc - Same. I love movie credits. It’s like ~Speed Name Reviewing~ while they hurry by!

I’ll be browsing around for a while, trying to find names that could lend the nickname Wick. So far:
Warwick (thanks nono)
Wickham
[name]Chadwick[/name]
Fenwick

Got to admit, I’m warming to Fenwick… but I’ll keep my eyes open for other possibilities. I welcome any suggestions, and of course positive/negative opinions.

Well, I don’t love Wyck spelled like that. It looks clunky and a bit made-up to me. However, I think that Wick as a nickname is adorable, and Fenwick could be a nice way to get there.
