I made a last ditch effort & asked DH to reconsider [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] as a possibility for baby #3, due in 4 weeks. I think it goes so great with our sibset [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] & [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].
I originally wanted to spell it O’[name_m]Neill[/name_m], but he thinks it feels like more of a first name if we remove the apostrophe and not capitalize the “n.” So if that’s what it takes, I’m willing (your thoughts?).
But we’re back to square 1 on mn…any fantastic suggestions? Here is our style: #1 [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] [name_f]Ryann[/name_f] #2 [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] W (yes, just W) #3 [name_f]Sonora[/name_f]/Sonorah [name_f]LeeAnn[/name_f] (this pregnancy, if it’s a girl)
A few we’re considering:
[name_m]Keane[/name_m]
[name_m]Tyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Simeon[/name_m]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
I think [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] is great, and I’m glad you guys have found a name that works! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites out of your list are [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Keane[/name_m] and [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Simeon[/name_m].
Here are just some other options you could consider:
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m], [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Kellan[/name_m], [name_m]Graeme[/name_m]/[name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Seamus[/name_m]
Congratulations!! [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] is awesome. I like [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Keane[/name_m] & [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Simeon[/name_m] also. I like the suggestions above, especially [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Kellan[/name_m].
I love the sound of it. I wonder though if there will be problems with it being pronounced oddly due to it being unexpected in the first slot. I don’t usually prefer O’[name_u]Neal[/name_u] but maybe [name_m]Oneal[/name_m] would have a better shot at being pronounced correctly. [name_m]Oneal[/name_m]? [name_m]Oneill[/name_m]? Hmm… dunno.
Yeesh I wouldn’t. [name_u]Neil[/name_u] is a great name but O’[name_m]Neill[/name_m] without the apostrophe looks a bit of a mess to me. I say leave it in or - better yet - drop the ‘o’ and just use [name_u]Neil[/name_u].
I really like it with your sib-set, I think it fits in really well! I agree with the others than on your list [name_m]Keane[/name_m] and [name_m]Simeon[/name_m] flow the best for middle names, and you have a third on [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Kellan[/name_m]. I also like [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_u]Carlin[/name_u] & [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Killian[/name_m]/[name_m]Cillian[/name_m].
I agree with rainydaygarden on the spelling. I can see where you are coming from with the first name and not wanting an apostrophe, but I can just see people pronouncing it On-eel, On-ill or One-ill at first glace, which would get tiresome, but I suppose there a worse things in life. There are a few names that have an apostrophe, D’Arcy, Ze’ev but oh the headaches it could cause.
At a glance I read it as ‘one ill’ and that might not be an uncommon reaction. A baby on the ward with my eldest was called O’[name_u]Shea[/name_u] so people do use apostrophes in names. I’d name him [name_u]Neil[/name_u] (‘like [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m]’ is going to make life much easier). O’[name_u]Neil[/name_u] could then be a nickname rather than a drag on official forms eg my online banking allows no punctuation signs in giving your name.
Have you thought about maybe using a first name that starts with O, then making [name_u]Neil[/name_u] the middle name? [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_u]Neil[/name_u], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_u]Neil[/name_u], etc? Then calling him O’[name_u]Neil[/name_u]?
Otherwise, I think O’[name_u]Neil[/name_u] is better than [name_m]Oneill[/name_m]. People will catch on, as they generally do, but it’s a combined 1) unfamiliar surname in the first name spot, and 2) unfamiliar spelling. And maybe having a familiar spelling would make the name easier to carry?
Thanks for your input. Like I said, I personally like the apostrophe in it. Personally, just “[name_u]Neil[/name_u]” as the name isn’t my style. I think I like the beginning vowel sound with my other kids’ names. If we were just talking about “[name_u]Neil[/name_u]” I’d skip it all together.
I really like [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Kellan[/name_m]. I’ll run it by DH. Any other suggestions?
Not a big fan, sorry.
I’m not typing this in a rude way so I hope you don’t take it as that but sometimes I believe people want to make their children’s life harder with spelling their names weirdly.
(I always ask myself if I would like to go through life with a certain name and spelling, possibly having to correct people all the time, usually, with weird spellings, it’s not worth it for me.)
[name_m]Oneill[/name_m] does not look like an actual name to me, it looks like a misspelling.
I don’t think O’[name_m]Neill[/name_m] is much better since it’s so obviously a surname, especially with that apostrophe.
However, if it is [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] for you, I like [name_m]Oneill[/name_m] [name_m]Simeon[/name_m] the best.
