Yevgeny

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce this name, and WDYT? I love it and pronounce it yev-[name_u]GAY[/name_u]-nee.

Yehv-GEH-nee, it’s a Russian form of [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. The most common nickname is Zhenya (ZHEH-nya).

I know a lot of guys named [name_m]Yevgeniy[/name_m] (and girls named [name_f]Yevgeniya[/name_f]), but my first thought when I hear the name is always Pushkin’s [name_m]Yevgeniy[/name_m] Onegin. Pleasing association, but I still dislike the sound of it.

What [name_f]Polina[/name_f] said. I love it, but it would have major pronunciation issues in an English-speaking country. I had a friend in university named Yevgen (truncated form) who went by Zhenya, and my mom couldn’t get it straight and kept calling him [name_f]Jenny[/name_f]. :frowning:

[name_m]Evgeni[/name_m] [name_f]Malkin[/name_f] is pretty famous in the Pittsburgh area, but here most people just call him “[name_m]Geno[/name_m]”

I don’t think this is very usable outside of [name_f]Russia[/name_f] or an area with a high concentration of Russian people…

As a hockey fan, I’m pretty familiar with it (also skater Plushenko just killed it at the Olympics), but it’s definitely going to be a challenge to spell/say for the majority of English speakers.

Exactly.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was [name_m]Evgeni[/name_m] [name_f]Malkin[/name_f].

I think of [name_m]Yevgeny[/name_m] Plushenko. It’s pronounced ev-GE-nee-y, with strong g like in go. I like this name very much.
