'You Can't Have a ______That Has Brown Hair'

I personally don’t think any name can only fit one specific look.

I have names on my list that i prefer for different looks. [name]Florence[/name] or [name]Rosamund[/name], for example, is a dark-haired, brown-eyed girl, while [name]Clementine[/name] could be more light-featured. It wouldn’t keep me from using the name if my kid looked differently than what i expected, but i so have those preconceived ideas. My future kids could range from pale-skinned blonds or or redheads to very tan brunettes with my genetic background, and I’m going to use the names on my list regardless.

This will sound terrible. But. Some names…I’ll call them ‘fun’ names. Names that are a little quirky, a little unique, a little off-kilter. I think they work amazingly on good-looking kids. And are awful on ugly kids. I know that’s horrible! But an ugly [name]Guinevere[/name]? An ugly [name]Quincy[/name]? An ugly [name]Horace[/name]? Basically what I’m saying is if you’re going to go weird, you better pray you have a good-looking kid who can get away with it. Other than that, nah.

For some reason, I can’t picture the name [name]Stella[/name] on anyone but a blonde. But that’s the only name I have a real strong imagery for.

Lol!! Definitely! I’ve thought this so often, and extend it to include really old fashioned, ‘frumpy’ names in addition to just weird names. A beautiful name goes a long way… A weird name is harder to pull off on an… offbeat looking kid.
I say this with the full knowledge that I’m probably going to need an independent third party to tell me if my kid really IS good looking. Because I’m probably only going to see perfection, at least while the hormones are still flying

I’ve always loved writing so for me some names just have a ‘look’ to them that I can clearly picture. [name]Chloe[/name] has short blonde hair, [name]Charlotte[/name] is pale with black hair, and [name]Abel[/name] has expressive gray eyes. But just because some people picture names a certain way doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use a name that you love. Names aren’t limited to appearance.

I’ll admit that it always seems a little odd to me when someone has a name that is very obviously from a different culture than they are, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. It just makes me go “huh?” It’s curious. And there are some names that I do associate with certain features just because of namesakes I’m familiar with or the name’s meaning or whatever. I don’t think that means people who look different shouldn’t have that name or it can’t fit them, I’d just have to get used to it.

I think it’s really silly though, in some other thread someone was saying “why would you name a baby [name]Hazel[/name] if she doesn’t have hazel eyes?” and "I wonder if my friend’s mom realizes she gave her blonde daughter a name that means “dark-hair”. You don’t necessarily know when your baby is born what color eyes or hair they have - the majority of babies are born with bluish-greyish eyes and are bald! And even my daughter, who was born with a full head of dark brown hair and blue eyes so dark they almost look purple, now has strawberry blonde curls and bright blue eyes. Babies change so SO much in the first year and you can’t exactly wait until their 1st birthday to name them to make sure your bald little [name]Crispin[/name]'s hair grows in curly or that your [name]Violet[/name]'s eyes stay violet!

All newborn babies look like little pink aliens. You’re not going to know if your kid is truly good-looking for…well, years probably! LOL! I mean, first they go through the “poopy, snotty, puke-on-everything phase”, followed shortly thereafter by the “awkward, gangly, and missing-teeth phase”, them the “sweaty and pimply and possibly-wearing-braces phase”. Maybe you’ll be able to give your kid a name as their high school graduation present. You’ll know by then if they can pull off something unusual. :stuck_out_tongue:

This made my day! So funny.

Haha, there are some names that I think fit better for someone with certain physical features. It’s mainly because I know someone with those characteristics or I’ve seen someone one tv.

[name]Stella[/name]- Blonde, blue eyes
[name]Mercedes[/name] ([name]Sadie[/name])- Redhead, green eyes
[name]Victoria[/name]- [name]Brunette[/name], brown eyes
[name]Claudia[/name]- [name]Black[/name] hair, green eyes
[name]Morgan[/name]- Blonde, blue eyes
[name]Jessica[/name]- [name]Brunette[/name], brown eyes

[name]Adam[/name]- [name]Brunette[/name], brown eyes
[name]Jonathan[/name]- [name]Brown[/name] or [name]Black[/name], hazel eyes
[name]Timothy[/name]- [name]Brown[/name] hair, brown eyes
[name]Cole[/name]- Blonde, blue eyes

I don’t think names go with specific coloring/looks, but some of mine seem very light or very dark.

Light names:
[name]Ailsa[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Lilith[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]

Dark names:
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Ondine[/name]
[name]Sybella[/name]
[name]Oberon[/name]
[name]Orlando[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]

Hmmm…I seem to classify names with A’s and E’s as bright and names with O’s as dark.

I wonder about some names that are especially yellow/red in the most literal way; [name]Leo[/name] names, [name]Marigold[/name], [name]Golda[/name], names that nn [name]Sunny[/name] or [name]Sonny[/name], [name]Ray[/name]? [name]Do[/name] these names only work on a fair child? What about names like [name]Raven[/name], [name]Ebony[/name], [name]Ember[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Cole[/name]…do they work better on someone dark? What about names that mean dark like [name]Melanie[/name] or light like [name]Helen[/name]? Does that matter since most people won’t know off-hand?

To me, no. I might name a dark skinned child [name]Marigold[/name] cause I hope she’s destined for a bright and sunny life. I might name a blondie [name]Ember[/name] cause it feels warm and has depth that I like. To me, it’s less about the appearance of the kid and more about the feel of the name and what it means to me.

That made me, blonde and blue-eyed [name]Molly[/name], laugh :P. [name]Johanna[/name] is really pretty, though

I personally can’t picture a [name]Samuel[/name] being fair haired. I don’t know why but I associate it with darker hair.
And while there is the obvious connection of [name]Ruby[/name] with red, I can’t imagine a red-headed [name]Ruby[/name]. But that’s more because the association + the hair color would be a little too much red for me.
