So this came to me when I was in an Religion test and check the spelling of [name]Heaven[/name] I read it backwords as [name]Nevaeh[/name], namenerdy right so have you ever had these moments? surely I can’t be the only one.
Sometimes I’m watching TV shows with my family or my boyfriend’s family and I just can’t not comment on the name choice. Sometimes, I have to say, “Those are really good names. I love it.” And sometimes, I have to say, “WHY WOULD YOU NAME A [name]PERSON[/name] THAT?”
Today in English class a girl from another class who was pregnant brought in her baby to show my English teacher. All the girls in the class walked up to see the baby and I did too, not because I really wanted to see it but because I wanted to know its name so badly and I can’t hear very well from where I sit in the back.
Anyway, its name was [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Grace[/name] (sp?) and I was so disappointed in how “generic” her name was I just walked back to my seat all bummed out and didn’t even look at the baby. I think out of all my classmates I was the only one who didn’t think her name was “gorgeous”
Whenever I see a film, I make sure that afterwards, I take a look at the full cast and crew list on IMDB.
I do it for every single film that I see, whether it at the cinema or on TV/DVD.
Sometimes the credits go so fast, or the writing is too small to see them properly, when the credits roll at the end. That’s why IMDB is a Godsend.
When someone mentions a name and you know the meaning off hand & everyone has that “what, is that your middle name or something?” moment. Nope. [name]Just[/name] obsessed.
Oh man I totally feel you on that. It’s so annoying when someone puts a top 10 first name with a top 10 middle name and everyone is like “Oh wow that’s stunning” and pretends not to know (or somehow doesn’t know) that there are like thousands of other girls out there with the same first and middle combination. I recently had two acquaintances give birth and one named her daughter [name]Savannah[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] and the other named her daughter [name]Belle[/name] [name]Marie[/name], and I just had to roll my eyes. Sometimes you just want to say, “Really? That was the most creative you could be?” but of course you smile and nod and declare what a lovely name it is.
I totally surprised my sister earlier this week when she was mentioning names for her next child, and at one name I said something like “Oh I like that because then all their names would have the same meaning”…and then I had to try to explain why I randomly knew the meanings of all of those names.
Also, I’d add: You know you’re a name-nerd when you cross something off your list before it becomes popular because you know it will soon skyrocket…For me, Hazel and August/Augustus are semi-crossed off of my list because The Fault in Our Stars (which features both names) is going to be made into a movie. I anticipate the movie doing well, so I think we’ll start to see more Hazels, Augusts, Augustuses, and possibly even Gus.
I totally get the above posters on the name meaning thing! Or knowing the origins of a bunch of random names. Or, also, wanting to know everyone’s middle names…
LOL, the only reason I read my hometown newspaper is to search the obituaries for old names and look through the birth announcements see what local people are naming their babies.
I once explained the history of surnames in western Europe to my biology class. It amazed me how many people didn’t know what it meant to have an occupational or patronymic surname…
Another one from me:
I spend a lot of my time on name blogs even during class I was discussing it with my friend in homeroom and I have brought it up with another friend. Thankfully they didn’t think I was crazy.
@southern.maple thats dedication. I’m occupational and many others are
Keep them coming
Ebs
My boyfriend just said…
“[name]Maggie[/name] you’re definitely a name nerd, because within minutes of meeting someone for the first time, you somehow manage to find a way of getting them to divulge the names of their parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, next door neighbors and their best friend from Kindergarten. You’re obsessed!”
While he’s exaggerating a bit - I do admit - that when I meet someone, I do like to find out the names of their immediate family. Especially siblings, I love to find out what sibling sets other people have gone for.
I remember about five or six years ago, my dad’s colleague leant him his and his two sons’ season tickets when they were on holiday so my dad, me and my sister could go to a football game for free. I don’t remember what the dad’s name was but I did look at the names of the two sons - [name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name]. I remember being a bit confused - “Why would you give your sons names that can both nickname to the same thing - [name]Dan[/name]?” I’ve since encountered another [name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name] sibset and it still perplexes me.
@essjay - I know two sisters who both have -bel names; [name]Annabel[/name] and [name]Isabel[/name]. Since they were young, they were known as [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Izzy[/name], but I sometimes wonder what would have happened if both had wanted to be [name]Belle[/name] or [name]Bella[/name]!
My teacher had a baby recently, and she brought it in to see the class. I’d been so excited to find out the baby’s name, because I’d heard she was going to go for an Irish name and I was curious to see what she picked. The kid was named [name]Ciara[/name] Bríd. For those of you who don’t live in [name]Ireland[/name], [name]Ciara[/name] is extremely popular here and two of the other teachers in the school also have daughters named [name]Ciara[/name], so I was rather disappointed. And Bríd is, in my opinion, the least interesting name of the [name]Bridget[/name] family. I had to refrain from sighing.
And then there’s the fact that I’m constantly asking my friends about their favorite names, and constantly being disappointed when they tell me [name]Claire[/name], or [name]Sophie[/name], or [name]Declan[/name]. Sure, they’re nice, but…unimaginative. ([name]Declan[/name] is pretty common here too, in case you were wondering.)
Haha I spent the duration of my sisters graduation ceremony the other night scanning the list of graduates because all of their middle names were listed. Then I ranted a bit to my bewildered mother about how many [name]Lynn[/name]'s, [name]Ann[/name]'s , and [name]Nicole[/name]'s I came across.( I was proud of my parents, though because my sis [name]Alexandra[/name] [name]Felicia[/name] stood out as one of the best combos).
I also sometimes watch baby shows on tlc to scrutinize the name at the end!
…you go to a ballet/concert/play and you spend the whole time looking at the names listed in the program and not watching the stage/listening to the music.
Bump Up
You can identify the origin and meaning of a name you’ve never heard or seen written before.
(This happened to me the other day, people thought it was a cool party trick. lol.)
I totally agree with so many of these answers! I think [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Grace[/name] is nice, but way way way to overused. It’s kinda like [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. Like no your kid isn’t unique because of twilight now everyone is naming there kid [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Marie[/name] lol.
I watch the credits at the end of movies too and my friends are always like “why do you want to watch the most boring and unimportant part of the movie?” Umm hello why not?!
When teachers have story problems on tests, I mostly just pay attention to the names they use and I think wow how generic or wow that’s old fashioned. Sometimes I try to think of middle names not even on purpose, it just sort of happens.
[name]One[/name] of my best friends always jokes around about names for my future child/children and says that she’s going to write a few down on paper and throw them into a hat and I have to pick one randomly and that’s the name I’ll use just because I change my favorite name everyday of the week.
So yeah that’s my story.
You know (even if you haven’t been around kids lately) that at least for a modern girl a name like [name]Amy[/name] or [name]Melissa[/name] would be more “unique” than [name]Isabella[/name] or [name]Mia[/name]. (Intended to be a spin-off to the Isabella [insert “filler” middle name] comments in some previous posts to this thread.)
