You LOVE it, but...

Anyone have any names that they just [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] but you cant stand the common nickname? I feel like I come across names like that all the time, which annoys me because unfortunately you cant control what your child will be called.

Examples:
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]- I dont like [name_f]Susie[/name_f], [name_f]Sue[/name_f], [name_f]Suze[/name_f], etc
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f]- I dont like [name_u]Jojo[/name_u], joie, [name_u]Joey[/name_u], etc
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]- I dont like [name_u]Bert[/name_u], [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] or [name_m]Al[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]- I dont like [name_u]Bert[/name_u], [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] or [name_m]Gibby[/name_m]
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]- I dont like [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] by itself

And those are just a few. Anyone have names whose nicknames bother you?

One of my favorite boys names is [name_u]August[/name_u]. I absolutely hate [name_u]Gus[/name_u], it just sounds gross to me.

I love [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], but hate [name_f]Addy[/name_f].
I like Abeline, but hate [name_u]Abby[/name_u].
I love [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], but hate [name_f]Maddie[/name_f].
I like [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], but [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is just meh.

I basically don’t like the “super” common nicknames you hear all the time.

@xredd–I feel the same way about [name_u]Gus[/name_u]!

Also, I like [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], but hate [name_u]Perry[/name_u].

Yes!

[name_m]Cormac[/name_m] - I hate [name_m]Mac[/name_m] and I truly despise [name_u]Cory[/name_u].

[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - I’d have to really enforce nn [name_m]Ned[/name_m] because I hate [name_m]Ed[/name_m] and [name_m]Eddie[/name_m].

I love [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_f]Estella[/name_f] but cannot stand [name_f]Essie[/name_f] (negative personal association rather than a hatred of the sound/cultural feel).

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - hate [name_u]Penny[/name_u].

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - love [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] but hate [name_f]Char[/name_f].

There are others, I am sure.

[name_f]Mirabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Mira[/name_f] but really dislike [name_f]Bella[/name_f]/[name_f]Belle[/name_f].
[name_f]Judith[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Judith[/name_f] but not [name_f]Judy[/name_f], plus [name_f]Judy[/name_f] is my aunt.

Hm…I actually have the opposite problem with a lot of names. There are nicknames that I like a whole lot more than any full-name I can come up with for them, and I could never bring myself to use a nickname by itself. I’m saving them for pet names at this point.

I absolutely love the name [name_m]Macsen[/name_m], but really, really, really dislike [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. (I don’t mind [name_u]Max[/name_u], although I prefer the formal name)

I love [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], but not huge into any of the [name_f]Elle[/name_f] nicknames… I would prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f].

I’m really adoring [name_u]Madigan[/name_u] - but [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is probably the most annoying name ever. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] would be my preference on that

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is adorable…but every one that I know goes by [name_f]Amy[/name_f], which is very much dislike

I love [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but hate [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]

Hmm, I’m really attracted to [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m], but [name_m]Lew[/name_m]/[name_u]Lou[/name_u] really throws me, though [name_m]Louie[/name_m] might work.
I love [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], but [name_f]Addy[/name_f]/[name_f]Addie[/name_f] is just awful.
I’ve been toying with the idea of [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] lately, but the idea of a [name_u]Bernie[/name_u] kills me.
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is so regal, but [name_m]Fred[/name_m] and [name_m]Rick[/name_m] are a little middle-aged sounding to me.
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] is cute, but [name_m]Barney[/name_m]? No.
Same thing with [name_m]Terence[/name_m]–[name_u]Terry[/name_u] is a no-go for me. It’s really too bad that we feel the need to shorten such beautiful, elegant names. Why can’t a baby just be [name_m]Archibald[/name_m], rather than [name_m]Archie[/name_m]?

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - not a fan of lossy, flick, floss,floss
gabriella- hate gabby
genevieve - don’t like gen or genna
adelaide - dislike addy
penelope - dislike penny
matilda - dislike maddy
annabel - dislike bella
dahlia - hate dolly
victoria - no to [name_f]Vickie[/name_f] and tori

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]: I just don’t like [name_u]Penny[/name_u].
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]: I don’t care for [name_m]Pip[/name_m], [name_u]Phil[/name_u] and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f].
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]: [name_u]Haley[/name_u] and [name_m]Lenny[/name_m] are not my taste.
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]: Hate [name_f]Amy[/name_f], like [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

And for the boys:
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]: I don’t like [name_m]Fred[/name_m] and [name_u]Freddy[/name_u].
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]: Dislike [name_m]Ted[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].

[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]- But never, ever any nickname (especially as [name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] etc. are so common); it’s great as it is.

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]- As well as being too popular, I can’t stand the nickname [name_m]Seb[/name_m].

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]- Somewhat like this name, but [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]/ [name_m]Nate[/name_m] is just a big no.

[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]- [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]/ [name_f]Izzie[/name_f] etc. are such common nns for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]/ [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], few people would automatically think [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], as a full name.

[name_f]Pandora[/name_f], [name_f]Eudora[/name_f], Endora and [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] (but I’d still use them)- Not a big fan of [name_f]Dora[/name_f] as the association with [name_f]Dora[/name_f] The [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] is just too strong.

I’m with everyone else I had [name_f]Addy[/name_f] thats why we with with Adalind and [name_f]Lindie[/name_f]

The only one that instantly comes to mind is [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]. [name_u]Pat[/name_u]? [name_m]Rick[/name_m]? Yuck.

[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] - Hate [name_u]Gabby[/name_u], but Gabry is a GP. Pretty sure that wouldn’t catch on though.
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]

[name_m]Gregory[/name_m] - HATE [name_m]Greg[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] - I actually really like [name_m]Ian[/name_m], but doubt that would catch on. I dislike [name_m]Seb[/name_m] a lot
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]

I’m usually on the other end of the scale…I love [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], but I don’t like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]. I like [name_u]Alex[/name_u], but I’m not a big fan of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I like [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], but I’d prefer not to use [name_u]James[/name_u]. You know? However, I love [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], but I don’t like [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] as much.

I like [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] a lot, but I dislike [name_m]Josh[/name_m]. It would practically be impossible to avoid that nickname.

[name_m]Andrew[/name_m], but not [name_u]Andy[/name_u] or [name_u]Drew[/name_u].

There’s lots more. Terrible problem to have!
