You Never Thought You'd Like

I’ve always disliked the name [name]Dorothy[/name] (mostly because of a prickly older woman I used to work with); then I met an adorable 2 year old named [name]Dorothy[/name], called [name]Dot[/name]. I’m starting to warm up to the name, especially with that nickname.

Other names:
[name]Henrietta[/name]-always thought it was too old lady, blame NCIS: LA for making it seem cool
[name]Jane[/name]-always thought of it as too ‘plain’
[name]Astrid[/name]-blame [name]How[/name] to Train Your Dragon
[name]Taryn[/name]-not usually a fan of trendy looking names, but something about this one is just so pretty

[name]Leopold[/name]-always seemed too old, but I’ve started to really love it for it’s quirkiness
[name]Raymond[/name]-didn’t think this name was quite ready for a revival, but am starting to reconsider
[name]James[/name]-I usually really dislike the traditional Bible names for boys-they just seem so boring to me, but this one has started getting stuck in my head

[name]Vera[/name] - about 3 or 4 years ago, I used to think it was too frumpy, but now it’s among my favorite names.
[name]Alana[/name] - Used to think it sounded like a snobby person’s name, but then toward the end of high school, I met a younger girl named [name]Alana[/name] who was anything but that. Also among my favorite names.
[name]Ivy[/name] - thought it was too “name nerd trendy” for the longest time. A couple months ago, I find it’s kind of growing on me as a middle name.

My short list of names I never thought I’d like:
[name]Noelle[/name] - this is growing in my favor. [name]Christmas[/name] is a really special family-centered time for me. It’s my favorite holiday but I could never think of a name I really liked to honor that. [name]Noelle[/name] (which I’ve been neutral about for years) suddenly sprang up on me a few months ago. Now I love it.
[name]Posey[/name] - only as a nn. But I adore this name. It makes me really happy.
[name]Prosper[/name] - I don’t usually like word names (mostly because they don’t translate well to other languages) but [name]Prosper[/name] is my all time favorite. I’m obsessed with it.
[name]August[/name] - I used to think it was such an awkward old man name. Now I [name]LOVE[/name] it - if I gave birth to a little boy tomorrow this would be a real option.

So far, at the top of my head:

Girls: [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name]. They only warmed up to me because I find they would be a easy way to honor my mom’s first name.

Boys: [name]Don[/name]'t know right now.

[name]Poppy[/name]. I used to find it so ugly sounding, now with the great connection to the ANZACS and I think it is so cute sounding

Names that have completely grown on me over time: [name]Wilhelmina[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name]. Also the idea of putting [name]Anne[/name], [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Rose[/name] in the first spot and not the middle.

Ohh this is a good one. I was just thinking about how I have quite a few names that really don’t fit what I usually like.

Hanna - It’s very popular. I usually like quirky and slightly unusual names. (Alaska, Ffion, Reinette, Tuesday, etc.) Hanna grew on me and I have no excuse lol.
Emilia - VERY popular in the Amelia form. I know someone named Emilia and she’s amazing. Maybe that’s why I like it. It reminds me of her.
Gerard - Too old man for me. But I love it.
Porter - It’s not really the name I dislike (it’s got a nice sound) but I have an ex boyfriend named Porter! And I STILL love this name.
Zephyr - It’s got that trendy Y that I hate so much.
Dallas - Not a huge fan of place names. Especially place names from the southern states. (Remove foot from mouth.) I love Texas! Texas is just fine! But Dallas makes me think of country music and I’m really not a huge fan.
Jade - One syllable. Don’t like one syllable names.
Kathryn - Only spelled like this. Too classic for me.
Louisa - Louise and Louisa sound like you-wheeze/you-wheeze-uh.

I know I made it sound like I hate these names but I don’t! These are some of my favorites but I really have ZERO idea why. They just grew on me.

[name]Ursula[/name], [name]Vanessa[/name] & [name]Honor[/name] for girls.
[name]Drake[/name] & [name]Silas[/name] for boys.

[name]Hester[/name] was one that crept up on me quietly. [name]Eilidh[/name] too, which I like as a slight connection to my grandma’s name, [name]Eileen[/name]. I liked [name]Edmond[/name] more and more as I researched my great granddads life.

[name]Leta[/name], [name]Magnolia[/name], [name]Wren[/name], [name]Lark[/name], [name]Fable[/name], [name]Clover[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Kerensa[/name], [name]Fay[/name], [name]Veda[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name], [name]Pandora[/name], [name]Julia[/name], & [name]Vanessa[/name] for girls.

[name]Indigo[/name], [name]Hawthorne[/name], [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Viggo[/name], [name]Fox[/name], [name]Rex[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Bodhi[/name], [name]Arlo[/name], [name]Maximus[/name], & [name]Evander[/name] for boys.

A lot of word/color/nature names too {some I mentioned above} [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], [name]Fleur[/name], [name]Briar[/name], [name]Bear[/name], [name]Dove[/name], [name]Bliss[/name], [name]Grey[/name], [name]Noble[/name], & [name]North[/name].

I’m sure there are more my style has changed SO much in the past few years!

[name]Ivy[/name] - For some reason, this name had always annoyed me, but now I’m beginning to like it!
[name]Cecily[/name] - This name always reminded me of [name]Sicily[/name], my least favorite place in [name]Italy[/name]. However, I am rather fond it now!
[name]Thisbe[/name] - Another one of those names I had previously stared at.
[name]Virginia[/name] - This is my grandmother’s name, and I have only begun to like for a few months now.
[name]Annmarie[/name] - I know it sounds very dated, but I liked it a few years ago, and for some reason I’m obsessed with it.

The one that sticks out to me is [name]Olive[/name]. To me, this name was akin to naming a child [name]Maud[/name]/[name]Maude[/name], [name]Doris[/name], [name]Myrtle[/name], [name]Gertrude[/name], etc. Really old lady-ish and not appealing at all. Now, I’m starting to warm to it, at least as a MN to [name]Daphne[/name]. It seems to fit a certain style I have going on, which is names that wouldn’t be out of place in a nursing home paired with newer, more stylish names with a bit of a nature theme.

I use to really dislike the name [name]Delilah[/name]. It was a name I never thought I would like, just because… I really don’t know why I didn’t like it. I think maybe the song ruined it for me, because I strongly disliked the song Hey there, [name]Delilah[/name]. And then now, all of a sudden, I adore the name. I think it’s so pretty, and I do think I would think of using it one day.

[name]Aubree[/name], Lumi, [name]Winter[/name]

[name]Bear[/name], [name]Fallon[/name], [name]Orion[/name]
