Your Back Up Option

Hi there.

For a girl, [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] is the one. It honors my dad, [name_m]David[/name_m], & my grandma & grandpa, [name_f]Annette[/name_f] & [name_m]Albert[/name_m]. If for some reason I couldn’t use it, I’d be perfectly happy w/a [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] if possible. Or [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] to honor Grandma [name_f]Pauline[/name_f].

For a boy, I’m fairly set on [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]. And if it was a first/only kid, it’d be [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m]. I guess if I already had used [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Aviva[/name_f], then maybe [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]? Anyway, if I couldn’t use [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], I’d be happy w/a [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_m]David[/name_m] or [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_m]Albert[/name_m]. Or [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dh is way more likely to agree to [name_m]Ewan[/name_m].

If I couldn’t use [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], my back up would probably be [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. That’s the name I have loved as long and as much, and it has a similar sweet, graceful vibe.

For boys, if I couldn’t use [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (the two tied for that top spot), I’d happily go for my sweet [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

My top choice for both genders is [name_u]Claude[/name_u]. For a back up, I would go with [name_u]Konstantin[/name_u] or [name_m]Akim[/name_m] for a boy and [name_f]Janina[/name_f], [name_f]Maite[/name_f] or [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] for a girl. I like [name_u]Konstantin[/name_u] quite a bit more than [name_m]Akim[/name_m], but it’s not an honor name, and [name_m]Akim[/name_m] honors several people important to me. I like the girls names almost equally, but today I would pick [name_f]Janina[/name_f].

@rosepip I love [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f] from your back up list.

For girls, this is really hard. For me, [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] is just miles above the rest. Everyday I see the name, I fall in love with it all over again. I’ve already create a visual in my head for my darling [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] one day.
I’ve been loving [name_u]Parker[/name_u] lately. I also love Evaluna, [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], and [name_f]Marijke[/name_f]. One of those 4, if I had to make a decision right now. Probably [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]? Very floral themed with [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]/Fleur, I know. I love flowers, I don’t mind the connection.

For boys, I love a LOT of boys names pretty equally. [name_u]James[/name_u] is my favourite, [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is my second favourite. Otherwise, I also would consider [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], and [name_u]Jasper[/name_u].

I’m so set on [name_m]Augusto[/name_m] for a boy that I wouldn’t know what to say if I couldn’t use it, I think maybe an alternative or one from my pair so [name_m]Lazaro[/name_m] since it’s similar but different, for girls if I couldn’t use [name_f]Carina[/name_f] I would chose a flower name since I love those so maybe [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] or [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]

For me, it would depend on perhaps where I live, or if I’ve grown tired of a name at that point or not. I also wouldn’t want the name to be too “trendy” at the time. I foresee a baby within the next year or two so we’ll see :see_no_evil: lol

Girl Favorites:
[name_f]Alina[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]

My absolute favorite for a girl is Ísrún. If my oldest had been a girl I’d have used the name without a doubt. But my new SO doesn’t like “obviously Icelandic names” on our children. I’ve got one son with him and twin boys on the way, so until now this hasn’t really been an issue. But if I’m ever pregnant with a girl and I won’t be able to use Ísrún I’ll be devastated, even though I know this will very likely be the case.
[name_f]My[/name_f] back up names for girls are: [name_f]Florie[/name_f] (or a different spelling), [name_f]Elizaveta[/name_f], Mareva, [name_u]Shura[/name_u] and [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f].

For a boy my top choices are the ones I’ve used for my sons and plan to use: Hjörtur, [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_m]Leonid[/name_m] & [name_m]Nikias[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] back up names for boys: [name_m]Kjartan[/name_m], Artemy, [name_m]Johannes[/name_m], [name_m]Nikomedes[/name_m] & [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]

We both got our top choices with our boys’ names.

If our next baby is a girl she’ll probably be [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (my favorite right now), [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. He’s come around to all three of these names so far. He’s also agreed to [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] as a middle name. I guess we’ll see how he feels if we do have a girl.

For another boy, I’m liking [name_u]Griffin[/name_u] (my favorite right now), [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u], or [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. He’s fine with any of them so again it will just depend on how we’re feeling when it’s time to actually name a baby and if we find other names we like more.

If I couldn’t use my favorites (because someone else used them or something) I would be sad but I also know there are so many other names out there. I’d just keep looking.

Usually our back up names are the ones we put aside for “what if it’s twins?” If [name_u]Mason[/name_u] was out, a boy would be [name_u]Declan[/name_u] (and I go back and forth on which is my favourite anyway, but he prefers [name_u]Mason[/name_u] for sure). And if I couldn’t use [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (it would take something drastic for [name_f]Mila[/name_f] to be off the table, if I’m honest) a baby girl would be [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], or [name_f]Anna[/name_f].

If I couldn’t use [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] (I’d be so sad), I would probably use [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

And if I couldn’t use [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], I’d use [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] or [name_m]Silas[/name_m].

My first pick is Ruthalina for a girl, and [name_u]Huxley[/name_u] for a boy. If I couldn’t use that, then my picks are [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Antonella[/name_f], and [name_f]Adia[/name_f] for girls, and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], and [name_u]Tristyn[/name_u] for boys.

Very good question. I have several mum friends who are pregnant at the moment and I think to myself gosh what if they use the names I like! For me if someone I knew (through my boys school mainly) or a close friend used a name I liked, I really don’t think I could use the name. It would feel a little less special. So therefore, I don’t share my baby names with close friends or family who are expecting or planning on another. This is mainly through fear they may use the names I like… Which would be really disappointing. That’s why nameberry is a good platform to ask strangers so to speak about your name choices as they are not in close proximity etc…
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner and I clash terribly with naming styles. He also procrastinates a lot whereas I want to pick a name and know that is the one! For a boy I really love [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] with the NN [name_m]Lawry[/name_m]/ [name_m]Lawrie[/name_m] but my partner isn’t too sold but is gradually warming to it. For a girl we can kinda both agree on [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] although he would prefer [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] whereas I prefer it the other way round. Lol. The problem with my partner and I picking names one of us is going to be super happy about the name choice and the other is going to be ‘ok’ with it. As he picked our other two boys names I am not budging on the name I want this time round. As selfish as that sounds.

My number one option for a girl right now is [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f], but I have a few honour middle names that I love, as well as first names that I love nearly as much as [name_f]Florence[/name_f], so I’m flexible.

My back-ups would be:
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_u]Willow[/name_u]
[name_u]Briar[/name_u]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]

I can’t decide on my top option for a boy at the moment - it keeps changing.

On one hand, I like sophisticated, charming names with nickname options:
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m] “[name_u]Percy[/name_u]”
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”
[name_m]Remus[/name_m]

And on the other hand, I like unisex, more modern names, like [name_u]Harley[/name_u] and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u].

Hopefully my partner likes at least one of the styles, because I love both! I think [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is probably my favourite at the moment.

I will never be able to use my favourite name [name_f]Martha[/name_f] - a very close relative has a similar name and she hates hates hates her name and I am also not a named after kind of person so [name_f]Martha[/name_f] is out (but stays on the list because it’s perfect!)

Since not [name_f]Martha[/name_f],
I’d be perfectly happy with [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].

I also came to the realisation that my favourite boys names is [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. I love everything about it, I love the [name_u]French[/name_u] and [name_f]English[/name_f] pronunciations, the nicknames, everything!

If I can’t use [name_m]Thomas[/name_m],
then [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], Auxence, [name_u]Elias[/name_u] or [name_m]Magnus[/name_m].

@tileishamaree I’m absolutely obsessed with your boy name options! [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] nn [name_u]Percy[/name_u] has been creeping very quickly up my list, lately.

If [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] was out, [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] would move up for me.

With my fiancee and I, [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is our second choice and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] is our 4th. Based on compromises.

Probably [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m].

Winifred was my number one option but it wasn’t quite right for my SO, even though he does like it too. [name_f]Bea[/name_f] was another top name of mine and then we ended up deciding between [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

For boys, [name_m]Linus[/name_m] is my current favorite but my SO doesn’t like it. We both agree on [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] so those are my backups.

This is easy for me because it’s my exact situation. I’m pregnant with a boy and my partner doesn’t love any of my top names, some of which are Bastian, Rex, Jude, Caspar, August etc.

So, basically, I have to compromise and we have to come to an agreement on one we both love, or one of us will have to accept going with a name he or she don’t love but at least doesn’t mind. At this point that seems more likely to be him as he isn’t sure what he does want this baby to be called, whereas I have at least 8 or so names I’d happily use tomorrow.

So, I’m secretly hoping he decides he actually does like one of the names I love, especially considering we have no back up names we can agree on! Otherwise, all I can do is hope I come up with something else I love that he also loves, or vice versa.

It sucks but unfortunately it’s just the way it is. With my daughter, we used a name we both adored but it wasn’t my number 1 choice (which at the time was either Juno or Olive). That didn’t really bother me though because the name we ultimately used is one I’ve always loved anyway.

If we had another daughter it would probably be easy for us; we’d likely use the other option we had on the table for my daughter, which has always been one of my very top names (Matilda) but which is very popular here (which bothers me but I think I’ve gotten over that now).
