Your Characters' Names?

Your Characters’ Names?

I've never seen this here, and I feel like this will be a good idea. (However, if there was one, credits to the first maker.) You could ask questions or just share, but make sure to answer the question asked by the previous speaker (for the sakes of every question being answered). Your characters' names, ones you are considering, and anything name-writer-together is askable.

My Question:

  • I’ve recently found out that a whole lot of people, even more than I knew, disliked -den names or unisex names more used frequently used on males aren’t very welcome in girls. As I named the main character “[name_u]Auden[/name_u],” I’m not very sure if I should change it. Or rather, if I can when I one day decide. (On the draft, I’m about 1/5th way through.)

If you like it, and it fits the character, I would keep the name. At least for me, I can strongly dislike a name, but like a character with it, and the name grows on me until I end up liking it. If the character is well written and likable, and the names fits them well, I wouldn’t worry. By the end, readers might end up loving the name [name_u]Auden[/name_u], or at least crushing on it.

Question: If you were reading a book and a character had a “kre8tyveleigh” spelled name, would it bother you? Would you not mind or would the name make you cringe? (names in question are still close to originals, like [name_m]Harlyn[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Harlan[/name_m], not mutilated versions of the name like “Charrlinn, the C is silent”)

It wouldn’t be bother me since the situation you talk about is impossible in Turkish, I am just talk about non Turkish names. No creatively spelled names won’t bother me much if they are close to original and I can understand how it is pronounced.

Question: I am trying to write a HP fanfic and I was going to ask what would [name_m]Severus[/name_m] name his son? I first picked [name_m]Oceanus[/name_m] but I can’t be sure. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestion? I might open a thread about this

I think [name_m]Oceanus[/name_m] is a great name, but if you’re looking for other options, I like [name_m]Silvanus[/name_m] or this website may help: 20000-NAMES.COM: Male Latin Names, Roman Names, Page 1 of 6--meaning, origin, etymology

Question: One of the two main characters in the story I’m working on is named [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] [name_f]Joselyn[/name_f]. Could her two younger siblings be [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m]? Suggestions?

The first question, it definitely could. It sounds strange that [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] have the same initials and that [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] does not, but it works out, and I feel like not many readers would notice that anyways. Overall, they go really well together, so if you like it, I say you use it.
Suggestions: [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_f]Annelise[/name_f], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_f]Sandra[/name_f], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Albert[/name_m]

Would two important characters with the same name bother you? Or very similar names? (e.g. [name_u]Auden[/name_u] and [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], same last name initial) [name_f]Do[/name_f] sibling names with the same ending bother you? (e.g. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and [name_f]Zoe[/name_f])

Thanks, and happy new year! Best wishes!

If they had the same name, and it wasn’t an important part of the plot, yes it would bother me. Similar names like [name_u]Auden[/name_u] and [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] wouldn’t bother me as much. I worry I would get characters with the same name mixed up. Sibling names with the same endings don’t bother me unless they are super matchy-matchy, and even then I don’t mind it in writing as much as in real life.

Thoughts on the name [name_m]Quay[/name_m] for a character? He’s about 11 years old, and very active. He loves sports and is very extroverted. His parents like more unusual names that could still be professional, as his mother is the mayor and his father is a well-known lawyer.

I think [name_m]Quay[/name_m] fits your character very well, since it seems like the type of name his parents would pick and it suites his personality.

Question: Opinions on the name [name_f]Athena[/name_f]? It would go to the older sister of the main character (her name is [name_f]Iris[/name_f]). The sister is very smart and beautiful…almost like the actual goddess, which is why I think the name [name_f]Athena[/name_f] would be too obvious and maybe even a little cringe-worthy. Any thoughts?

NOT cringe-worthy! Some mythology names are very wearable and still sound fresh, which ([name_f]IMO[/name_f]) includes [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. And no name is obvious when it comes to writing a book, because — face it — every kind of name can be inside a book. [MY OPINION: [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], keep the name!]

I might hit the most questions on this thread. OOPS.
I’ve been thinking about sibling names for a long time, and the first two (who are very important characters, one is the protagonist) are named [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] “[name_u]Abby[/name_u]” “[name_f]Gail[/name_f]” and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] “[name_u]Lou[/name_u]” “[name_u]Isa[/name_u].” As you can see, these are very classic names that have two nicknames, one more common, and the other rarer. I’m starting to have doubts about this one, the last. Her name is [name_f]Genoa[/name_f].

To organize:

  1. [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] Clemm
  2. [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] Clemm
  3. [[name_f]Genoa[/name_f] [name_f]Teresa[/name_f] Clemm]

Suggestions?

The names actually fit [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. They are whimsical and feminine, and in the first half of the alphabet. [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] feels a little out of place however, since it’s rather trendy and spunky.

Here’s my question:

I’m writing a story. My main character is [name_f]Kirsi[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u], and her older step-brother is [name_u]Kristian[/name_u] [name_m]Hyde[/name_m].

  1. What do you think of this sibset? They’re both Finnish and the names are used by the Finnish as well.

  2. Additionally, [name_f]Kirsi[/name_f] has a little sister, currently named [name_f]Esme[/name_f], but I felt it seemed out of place. I want something that’s Finnish but easy to pronounce, short and sweet for an adorable girl. Here are some suggestions: [name_f]Elli[/name_f], Enni, [name_f]Meri[/name_f], [name_f]Suvi[/name_f]

If it were a boy instead, the name suggestions are: [name_u]Mika[/name_u], [name_f]Lari[/name_f], [name_u]Lauri[/name_u], [name_m]Kalle[/name_m], [name_m]Eero[/name_m], [name_f]Olli[/name_f], Elias, Henri

[name_f]ANSWER[/name_f]:

(1) Quite unique (in English, at least), and it has spunk. I would keep it, just in case you’re on the verge of change-it-or-not.

(2) Since I care about initials a whole lot, it does seem to bother me that [name_f]Esme[/name_f] doesn’t have the K initials. Not many would notice that, however. (Maybe you could change [name_u]Kristian[/name_u]'s name?) I think [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Kirsi[/name_f] get along in a decent sense.) For the girls, I favor [name_f]Meri[/name_f] and [name_f]Suvi[/name_f]. For the boys, I think [name_u]Elias[/name_u] and [name_m]Henri[/name_m] could work. Also, I really like [name_u]Mika[/name_u] for a girl, what about that? (I think if you’re going to make it a boy, that Kallum/[name_m]Callum[/name_m] could work well.)

To organize:
(1) [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] IT.
(2) [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] bothering, but it could work very well, depending on how you pull it off. For the suggestions, I like [name_f]Meri[/name_f], [name_f]Suvi[/name_f], and [name_u]Mika[/name_u] for a girl, and for a boy, I think Kallum/[name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], and [name_m]Henri[/name_m] are good.

QUESTION:
Would it bother you if the story said that someone’s name was [name_u]Clare[/name_u] [name_u]Blake[/name_u] [name_u]Vernon[/name_u] just to find it as [name_f]Clara[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f] “[name_u]Clare[/name_u]” [name_u]Blake[/name_u] [name_u]Vernon[/name_u] on a gravestone? ([name_u]Clare[/name_u] is her preferred name and I wanted to use it like that, as it was a very close friend of hers that brought her up — he would know which name she preferred.) What do you think of the name in the first place?

I don’t think it would bother me, personally. There are lots of people who go by their middle names/nicknames for their middle names, or solely go by a nickname (for instance, my brother has always been called [name_m]Liam[/name_m], and didn’t know his name was [name_m]William[/name_m] until he was five or six).
As for the name itself, I think it’s great. I especially like the spelling [name_u]Clare[/name_u] as opposed to the more common [name_f]Claire[/name_f].

Would it be too confusing if I had two characters in the same storyline named [name_u]Cam[/name_u] and [name_m]Cole[/name_m]? The similarity has been bothering me a little for a long time now.

Hmm, it might be a bit confusing to me because I tend to read fast which sometimes means I only look at the “shape” of the character’s names (for example, I’d look for the shortness of [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] or the double L in [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]) and [name_u]Cam[/name_u] and [name_m]Cole[/name_m] have similar shapes. However, I know that I have a bad habit of skimming when I read, so many people don’t do that. My book-loving friends, for instance, give me a hard time about reading fast and not appreciating the book, so I doubt they’d have a problem. And, honestly I think the M in [name_u]Cam[/name_u] would help me distinguish it when I read fast, so it might not even be a problem for me. I’d say keep it unless you find a name you like even more.

Any girl names that you find sexy or you think would belong to a sexy girl?

I don’t think there are exactly “sexy” names but I do feel like -a ending names for girls have a “sexier” feel to them. Example, [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is sexier than [name_f]Eve[/name_f].
Some names considered sexy names would be: [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] (the color + the [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] Johansson association), [name_f]Laila[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] (badass sexy), [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Gia[/name_f], [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f], [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f]…
I think it’s all about the flow!

I was trying to come up with names for the children of one of my stories. I want to have cute sibsets but I don’t want them to be too matchy.
For one of the sibsets I settled on [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. 1) What would [name_f]Luna[/name_f] siblings be called? (I have only found [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] for a boy. What do you think?) 2) [name_f]Luna[/name_f] has no middle name… I wanted something classier but not [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] type of classic. (This sibset last name is [name_u]Blake[/name_u])
For the other sibset, I liked [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Nola[/name_f]) and for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]'s sister I wanted a longer version for “[name_f]Lily[/name_f]” (That’s not [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]). 3) What would [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]'s siblings be called? 4) Same with [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] has no middle name. However, [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]'s middle name can be bolder. (Their last name is Woods)

I like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] together, and then i’m left wondering do characters need middle names? I’m finding it hard to recollect any characters with middle names, unless it’s something like Dumbledore who has 10 names or whatever. Honestly I’m rubbish at thinking of middle names for characters too, I just don’t bother.

For “[name_f]Lily[/name_f]” nickname, what about [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Lilliana[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Talila[/name_f].

I have characters who go through name changes, as part of the story (honorifics for great deeds sort of thing). If I start calling them one thing then use something else, is that too confusing? I feel like it’s a part of the plot so I hope it’s easy to follow along, but unsure. All names are made up (or very obscure), they’re elven.

It could be a bit confusing specially if the names are made up. Maybe you could follow certain “rules” (all of this character’s names start with L, this one’s always end in A, etc) or you could use other literary tools like descriptions to make it more obvious (always bringing attention to the same particular trait, like their eyes or their height). I think it depends a lot on your writing style and how the story goes too.
If everything else fails, you could always clarify and specifically state which characters have used which names

I need to name three siblings, one girl and twin boys. I’m a bit stuck because I want the names to follow certain rules:

  1. Middle name has to be Wonder, surname is [name_m]King[/name_m]
  2. Sibset should be a bit too matchy (think shared initials)
  3. I want the girl’s name to have more than one nickname

I thought of:
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] ([name_f]Tati[/name_f]/[name_f]Tina[/name_f]), [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] but I’m not sold on how [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] sounds with the more classic [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], but I only like [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] as a nickname
[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] ([name_f]Tessa[/name_f]/[name_f]Sally[/name_f]) and [name_m]Thomson[/name_m], but I’m stuck on the third name

If you can come up with other sibsets or help with the ones I’ve already tried I’d really appreciate it. And FYI, the names don’t have to start with T

Bonus: which name do you like better for a supermodel? [name_f]Angela[/name_f] or [name_f]Angeles[/name_f]?

Of the sibsets you’ve listed, I like [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] the best. A few more T names to consider:
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] “[name_u]Tallie[/name_u]”/"[name_f]Lula[/name_f]"
[name_f]Thomasin[/name_f] (I can’t think of any specific nicknames, but I know it has potential for multiple.)
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”/"[name_f]Dosia[/name_f]"
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

I like [name_f]Angeles[/name_f] better! Very sexy!

My main character has been [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] from the start, but I could use some middle name suggestions and a second opinion on the name [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_u]Evan[/name_u] for her older sister. ([name_u]Evan[/name_u] is a variant of a family surname.)

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_u]Evan[/name_u] doesn’t flow for me. What about [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]?

[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] isn’t my style. I’m not sure if it’s gay-uh or guy-uh. Either of the previous suggestions would work with this name. I’m a fan of using names with meaning. Is there another family name you can use for her middle or something that has a meaning?

My Question:
I’m writing a story with a friend where a fantasy character (goat person/faun) magically crosses over to the real world. The real-life character is a slightly irresponsible young adult who has her house to herself for two weeks and must figure out how to get the faun back to her dimension.

Any ideas on how this might happen and what might have caused the dimension jump in the first place?

That really depends on the magical parameters of your world/s. You could go the route of happening upon a portal of some kind, or a spell. It could happen through an object that the MC is given/finds/steals. The Subtle Knife features a dagger that can cut virtually anything like it’s butter, and also the fabric of time and space that allows the MCs the freely transfer dimensions. It could be literally anything you want it to be
I hope that helps a bit.

My question: I am writing about a coven of Witches, who take in a young woman named [name_f]Vivica[/name_f] who finds out that she is a witch as well. They don’t understand how she was taken out of Witch society or how she got her powers (as a ritual must be preformed). Unbeknownst to everyone she is part [name_f]Fae[/name_f] (whom the Witches are at war with) and at some point she will encounter her [name_f]Fae[/name_f] Father, but he will not reveal himself as such so that he can manipulate her.
I am having trouble figuring out how I can set up introducing him and a meeting between them, and why and how he would convince a novice Witch that he needs her help to do ANYTHING. I was thinking that he could convince her that the [name_f]Fae[/name_f] are not as bad as the Witches say, and that he wants to prove it to her so that she can convince the others and help to end the war between them. But… is that believable?

Of course it is, but it would depend on his (and technically your) ability to make it sound like a thing. Your eloquence. I like it, it’s interesting! [name_m]Just[/name_m] a question, though — why wouldn’t he reveal himself? I think it would be logical for him to do so. If you’re alone, you’d probably desire to meet your parents once in a while. A child instinctively trusts his(her) parents.

Which background and plot would you like more?

  • It’s a perfect society. People live in absolute peace and the rulers have things in check. No discrimination and no problems humans face. But there are rebellions — those that want to destroy their own world. They want to reunite with the other Rational Species, humans. They ask difficult questions even the leaders are forced to make opinions on, and the protagonists must work to tell them that “life isn’t math — there can be different answers.”
  • It’s on [name_f]Earth[/name_f]. There are (essentially) “orphanages,” more often called “Transitions” or “Transits.” They must live hidden and passing as humans. One day, a rebellion spreads intriguing, dark, yet true questions, and if humans realize Transits exist — even before the ones in the Magical [name_m]Land[/name_m], they will die. Because they are closer.

Also, is a character being bisexual a thing that people won’t like?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] a lot of people still have those prejudices?

I prefer the first plot, it sounds really interesting. It would have a lot of good questions and morals, plus different opinions and a variety of characters to write about. I would definitely want to read a book with that idea. I also think it looks really fun for you to write.

And while some people still have homophobic opinions, I wouldn’t let it stop you from writing a bi character. If you think one of your characters should be bisexual, write them as bi. The world needs more representation in books.

Are these names too similar for characters?
[name_f]Senna[/name_f] & [name_m]Sergei[/name_m]
[name_m]Kierre[/name_m] & Keitha
Keitha & [name_f]Eira[/name_f]
