Anyone really enjoy (or really loathe) place names?
My favorite place name (and what we will DEFINITELY be naming one of our first daughters) is [name_u]Holland[/name_u]! I’m also starting to like the name “[name_f]India[/name_f]”, which I previously dismissed because we used to have a dog named “[name_f]Indie[/name_f]” (which is also a pretty cool name, too).
[name_u]Eden[/name_u], even though it’s common enough and more of an abstract place name. I just think it’s absolutely gorgeous!
[name_u]Holland[/name_u] is a great pick as well (well done!) and my guilty pleasure place name is [name_u]Tennessee[/name_u], but for a girl!
BTW, totally tempted to make the full name “[name_f]India[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f]” A bit silly, but super cute in my opinion (if [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] Paltrow can use the name, so can I!)
[name_f]Siena[/name_f], [name_u]Sierra[/name_u], [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], Sidney, Tosca. I like ones that aren’t in-your-face.
I’m not really big on place names, but I’ve had a few interesting conversations about them recently.
I was talking to a friend recently about names and mentioned that place names are becoming more common and he said he didn’t understand the appeal. My response was just to say, “so you’ve never met a girl named [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u]?” There’s a city with that name in our state, and it’s a common name in our age group. Blew his mind. I think he didn’t realize how many names are derived from places.
Also, I was talking to a younger friend about my college roommates and I was reminded that sophomore year two of my roommates were named [name_f]India[/name_f] and [name_f]Aija[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Asia[/name_f]). I had never heard either name before at that point and it was funny that I lived with them both at the same time.
Finally, I had a customer recently and while he was wandering around the store his friends kept calling out to him and calling him Naz, which I found interesting. When he went to pay, I checked the name on his credit card out of curiosity. His full first name was [name_m]Nazareth[/name_m]. I wouldn’t use it myself, but I love it!
[name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], personally), and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] are my favorites! All of them are on my own list. I guess I don’t love place names that aren’t really names before they were names of places. [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] is a HUGE GP, though.
Oh wow, I love the name [name_m]Nazareth[/name_m]! Thank you for the interesting stories, it’s always great to see different perspectives and stories behind the names that you like (or don’t like!).
I’m not big on place names generallly, and the ones I like are those that have been long established as “human” names- [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
I find [name_u]Holland[/name_u] to be very cute. I also quite like [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], [name_f]Venetia[/name_f] and [name_u]Dakota[/name_u]. Objectively I also think [name_f]Argentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Malvina[/name_f] (the Spanish names for the Falklands) could work, but being Argentine myself I think they’re off limits for me.
I have a friend named [name_f]Africa[/name_f] and she really rocks it. I can definitely see it catching on at some point
I do have a few place names that I really love on my list, so I don’t dislike them, but I think some can be a bit too in your face and I’ve known people from certain places (in particular countries) find it weird if someone who doesn’t appear to have ties to the country has its name. I kind of get that with the names of some places I know, like I find [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] and [name_u]London[/name_u] really unattractive as names, so perhaps it depends on where you live too. I think it can sometimes be hard to judge, but I tend to just like how they sound or the images they have. A lot of the time, they feel more like human names than places.
Anyway my favourites are:
[name_f]Valencia[/name_f]: Such a good meaning, plus has ties to names like [name_f]Valerie[/name_f]/[name_f]Valeria[/name_f].
[name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]: I did actually start liking this because of the library at [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], after I learned a bit about it in history, and I love the imagery from it.
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]: [name_u]Love[/name_u] the connection to Greek mythology, and its such an energetic, bright sounding name that’s so fun to say
[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]: I really like the sound. I’m a huge sucker for any -enna name, and the Vee- sound at the start adds so much energy!
[name_f]Odessa[/name_f]: Same as [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], looks and sounds gorgeous
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]: Such a lovely vintage gem!
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]: Same as [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], I’d quite like to visit [name_f]Florence[/name_f] too.
[name_f]Venezia[/name_f]: I have actually been to [name_f]Venice[/name_f], and I loved it, had this on my list for a while though.
Illyria: Not technically a modern place name, but it has a really melodic sound to it.
[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f]: Similar to [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], there’s a lot of energy and adventure in one name, and whilst I’m not the biggest fan of nicknames, I do love [name_f]Sally[/name_f].
