A friend of mine is having a boy in a couple of months, I was telling her how much help I’d gotten from Nameberry and she wanted me to see if I could find her any suggestions.
She’s of Irish ancestry and feels strongly connected to that aspect of her heritage, so she would like to use an Irish name either for the first or the middle name. She was thinking of maybe an Irish-feeling version of one of the male names (mainly [name]John[/name], [name]Eugene[/name] or [name]William[/name]) from her husband’s family, so that they’re both represented. She is considering [name]Eoghan[/name], which looks like [name]Eugene[/name] even if it isn’t pronounced like it lol, because she likes the meaning. Any other ideas or thoughts for her?
(She doesn’t necessarily only want Irish versions of these particular names, she’s pretty open-minded at the moment
Oh, she’ll definitely love [name]Tadhg[/name], thanks! Although I think it would have to be a middle name, because I don’t think anyone would know how to pronounce it xD
[name]Eamon[/name]
[name]Cillian[/name]
[name]Ewan[/name]
[name]Brody[/name]
[name]Cameron[/name] (is [name]Cameron[/name] Irish? For some reason it feels it, but now that I’m thinking about it I could be completely wrong!)
[name]Ciaran[/name]/[name]Kieran[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Tiernan[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name] (SO popular, but if it wasn’t so popular, I’d think it was absolutely stunning, I still really like [name]Aidan[/name]!)
[name]Ian[/name]
[name]Jack[/name] (technically not Irish, but it’s very popular in [name]Ireland[/name] and has been for years)
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name] (love the nn [name]Paddy[/name] or [name]Pax[/name] for this)
[name]Finnegan[/name]
[name]Finnian[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]/[name]Finlay[/name]
[name]Flynn[/name]
[name]Murray[/name]
[name]Murphy[/name]
That’s about all I’ve got for now. If she doesn’t find an Irish name she LOVES that honors her family, she could probably do something like [name]Cillian[/name] [name]John[/name] or [name]Murray[/name] [name]William[/name], etc. It could honor both sides, maybe?
ETA: Some of these might be accidentally Scottish or Welsh. I tried to avoid them, but I didn’t really look it up and I’m going off of memory here.
I like [name]Eamon[/name] a lot, or [name]Patrick[/name] or [name]Padraig[/name]? Nickname [name]Paddy[/name] is super cute, I know a 12 year old named this and he pulls it off. Other ones I like are [name]Declan[/name], [name]Seamus[/name], [name]Desmond[/name] (I believe this is Irish?) [name]Brendan[/name], [name]Kieran[/name]/[name]Ciaran[/name]
I was going to suggest [name]Declan[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Ronan[/name], [name]Ciaran[/name], [name]Brendan[/name] and [name]Patrick[/name] but they have already been said. [name]Ash[/name], [name]Cameron[/name] is a Scottish last name which means ‘crooked nose’.
She also likes [name]William[/name] itself, but not so much [name]Eugene[/name] or [name]John[/name], so she is thinking about pairing [name]William[/name] (probably nn [name]Will[/name]) with one of the other names. I’m sure I’ll have to come back and make a poll for her, but so far she’s liking
[name]William[/name] [name]Tadhg[/name]
[name]William[/name] [name]Eoghan[/name]
[name]Ronan[/name] [name]William[/name]
[name]Niall[/name] [name]William[/name] (I think this has too many l’s, though)
[name]Finnegan[/name] [name]William[/name]
I think she’s starting to panic a little that she hasn’t even really been thinking of names haha
[name]Liam[/name] would be a good choice to represent [name]William[/name]. [name]Sean[/name] is another good option. [name]Eoghan[/name] is technically the Irish translation, as is [name]Aodh[/name]. Some unrelated names I love are [name]Declan[/name], [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Kieran[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], [name]Callum[/name], [name]Ryan[/name], and [name]Patrick[/name]. If she wants something more unique- [name]Daire[/name], [name]Odhran[/name], [name]Oisin[/name], [name]Eoin[/name] (a variation of [name]John[/name]!), Tadgh, [name]Niall[/name], or [name]Fionn[/name].
