Your favourite of these three French names!

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in [name]September[/name]. We have had her first name picked for a while, which is [name]Violet[/name]. Originally we wanted a really meaningful middle name, however it turns out neither of us really feel any need to honor a family member etc so we decided on a French name as we have both done a lot of travelling together and we lived in [name]France[/name] for a year. Also I just love the sound of pretty French names! So I have narrowed it down to these three names. [name]Violet[/name] is set in stone so please no first name suggestions! Also, all three choices go well with our (pretty boring) surname, so that’s not a problem

[name]Violet[/name] Élodie (pronounced ay-lo-[name]DEE[/name])
[name]Violet[/name] Émilie (pronounced ay-mi-[name]LEE[/name])
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Ana[/name]ïs (pronounced ah-na-EES)

Thanks for your input!

First two are great! The last one I’d [name]LOVE[/name], but your eventual teenager might not. Think of what her peer counterparts (cruel ones) will tease of… :-/

I think [name]Violet[/name] [name]Anais[/name] has the best flow… but people will constantly misspell and / or mispronounce it. So maybe go with [name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name]? I think all three are nice choices. [name]Violet[/name] is a very lovely name.

I love [name]Violet[/name] [name]Ana[/name]ïs! It has the best flow and sounds great! Previous posters mentioned concern that it’ll be mispelled, or mispronounced, or teased, but middle names aren’t used very often. It’s the best option. Second choice would be [name]Violet[/name] Émilie.

  • [name]Athena[/name]

[name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] is absolutely stunning but I’d be careful, [name]Elodie[/name] is peaking in popularity right now.

I also adore the last name, [name]Anais[/name], but you do have to consider the taunting your poor daughter might receive because of it.

[name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] is absolutley gorgeous but as above it is peaking in popularity at the moment. [name]Violet[/name] [name]Anais[/name] is also beautiful seeing as it has a great flow but you may have to consider that she may get taunted by it.

I would go with [name]Violet[/name] Élodie.

I really like [name]Violet[/name] Élodie. It’s very pretty and goes well with [name]Violet[/name].

I agree. I have a great fondness for [name]Elodie[/name] as a name.

I think [name]Violet[/name] [name]Anais[/name] sounds the best. They’re all beautiful!

I like [name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] best.

I wouldn’t worry about being teased for [name]Anais[/name]…hardly anyone outside of immediate family will even know it’s her middle name.

I love [name]Violet[/name] [name]Anais[/name], and I think pps who are saying that she’d be teased for it or have trouble with people spelling it are being silly. [name]How[/name] often do random other people even know your middle name? The majority of my classmates didn’t, and usually if I was using it at all I was personally writing it onto a form or something. So don’t let those kind of things deter you. [name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] would be my second choice.

I think the middle spot is the perfect spot for [name]Anais[/name]. It’s not written out there for others to see and mispronounce. Whenever people ask her, she will personally tell them on the spot how to pronounce it. So minimize issues.

[name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name] is very beautiful.

[name]Violet[/name] [name]Anais[/name] is gorgeous! I love it!

I really love all of the potential combinations. Using a real French name as a middle name is a great idea because you won’t have to worry about people mispronouncing it.

Although [name]Violet[/name] Élodie and [name]Violet[/name] Émilie are also beautiful, I think [name]Violet[/name] [name]Ana[/name]ïs may be the best option. Most of my reasoning for this is based on the way that most Americans (I am assuming you are American.) pronounced [name]Elodie[/name] and [name]Emilie[/name] when they lack accent marks. Most people would say [name]EL[/name]-o-dee and [name]EM[/name]-ih-lee (like a variant spelling of [name]Emily[/name]). [name]Elodie[/name] is becoming more common, and [name]Emilie[/name] (and especially [name]Emily[/name]) is already quite common. Despite the fact that most people will not be pronouncing your daughter’s middle name, it is still nice to know that people won’t mistake it for another name. [name]Ana[/name]ïs is such a “shocking” name to Americans that even if it were to be spelled [name]Anais[/name], people would still question its pronunciation before automatically saying it the wrong way. Many electronic documents only allow the use of the standard 26 letters (without accents, etc.), and so I think you must consider how the names would appear without accents.

I wish that [name]Ana[/name]ïs was more common in the United States, but because of the difficulty of pronouncing it, this is not going to happen anytime soon. No one can quite make a variant of it that sounds more American (which has happened with [name]Elodie[/name] and [name]Emilie[/name]). However, because you know how to pronounce [name]Ana[/name]ïs, it works perfectly in the middle name spot, where you won’t have to worry about it confusing others.

I vote [name]Violet[/name] [name]Elodie[/name]!

I like [name]Elodie[/name] out of the 3 based on sound but if you want something that’s currently popular over there and unique here I would go with [name]Ana[/name]ïs.

[name]Anais[/name] is interesting…but I think [name]Elodie[/name] is the winner of the three.
