My partner and I were going through our long list of potential boys names to narrow it down to a top 10.
It kind of got thrown onto the longer list with no thought, but at second glance “[name]HUGO[/name]” really stood out to me. The more I think about it, the more I like it. And my usually conservative partner (i.e. [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Charles[/name]) said it’s pretty cute. Hmmmm.
So…what would your reaction be if I were to introduce you to my daughter [name]Stella[/name] [name]Joy[/name] and her brother [name]Hugo[/name] [name]John[/name]?
This is my first impression of [name]HUGO[/name], all caps: Hugo "Hurley" Reyes | Lostpedia | Fandom
My first impression of the name [name]Hugo[/name] written out normally is probably kinder as far as things-to-name-your-child go. I actually think it fits in quite well with more conservative names like those you mentioned. It sounds strongly to me like something an upper-class, “old money” brit might name their child. I think it’s quite a fine name and goes very well with [name]Stella[/name]. I only mention Lost because depending on the area you live in, that might be the first impression some people have when you tell them the name (it would be in my area) – that will almost certainly go away by the time your child is old enough to care, but you might get tired of it. Then again, you might live in a less telly-from-last-year centered part of the world than I do.
I like [name]Hugo[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you pronounce it with or without the hard “H” sound? I think either is correct, depending on where in the world you are at a given time.
First up, No as it is a little over the top for me, I prefer [name]Hugh[/name], however, it depends on your overall naming style of the other siblings. If you have an [name]Hugo[/name] then his sister is probably [name]Annabel[/name] or [name]Clementine[/name] and his older brother is [name]Quentin[/name]. If you like [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Holden[/name] I think that is a mismash of styles and wouldn’t like that mix.
I’m sorry, I really don’t like the name [name]Hugo[/name]. But I must say that the two names sound wonderful together, so I don’t see any problem in using it
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It’s been very interesting reading all the responses. I’m glad there are so many overall positive responses, and thank-you to those who pointed out what less-than-stellar associations people might have when they first hear the name (Lost and [name]Chavez[/name]).
I think I ended up with an excellent cross-section of the good and bad for this name.
After hearing all the responses, I still really like it and think it will stay on our short list. I mentioned it again to my partner this morning who said, “Well, I’m not writing it off…” which was a good sign!
When I think of [name]Chavez[/name], I think of the Spanish pronunciation Oogo. Still close, but [name]Hugo[/name] is different enough with an Anglo pronunciation that it’s really not completely tied in my mind.
[name]Love[/name] it! I definitely think British upper class, but in a fun, charming way. [name]Hugo[/name] [name]John[/name] is a wonderful combo, too
Associations are a strange thing. At first when I read your post I thought, “car!” but I don’t think that’s what you meant. I think with most new/different names, we think of the few times we’ve heard it and then make a connection. [name]Just[/name] think if you’d only known one [name]Alex[/name] in your life and he was a real jerk. You’d probably hate the name. Anyhow, I think it sounds great with [name]Stella[/name]. Go for it!
