Your naming rules....

[name]Just[/name] for fun try writing a list of rules that you would use to find the perfect name and then find some names that fit. Here is my go:

  1. Must be easy to pronounce.
  2. Must be easy to spell.
  3. Should avoid “kree8iv” spellings.
  4. Should have a sort of charm.
  5. Should have a good meaning.
  6. Should have safe initials.

Lets to full names and say that the surname is Wooster!

My names:
Girl:
[name]Gertrude[/name] [name]Honoria[/name] Wooster (G.H.W) “[name]Trudy[/name]”
[name]Roberta[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] Wooster (R.E.W)
[name]Madeline[/name] [name]Mary[/name] Wooster (M.M.W)
Boy:
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Dan[/name] Wooster (F.D.W) “[name]Fred[/name]”
[name]Francis[/name] [name]Wilfred[/name] Wooster (F.W.W) “[name]Frank[/name]”
[name]John[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] Wooster (J.M.W)

  1. The spelling and pronunciation must be possible in multiple languages.
  2. They should have some historical or literary gravity, no new mash-ups.
  3. They should not be overly common (I have a very common name and it bothered me) but also not immediately noticeable as strange (hope it makes sense).
  4. Their should have nice meaning.

[name]Emilia[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Leonor[/name] [name]Alice[/name]

[name]Raphael[/name] [name]Arne[/name]
[name]Florian[/name] [name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Felix[/name]

  1. Pronounceable by looking at the name
  2. Have a a Catholic saint’s name or a variation of his/her name somewhere in the mix.
  3. Should have some sort of connection to something, directly or meaning-wise (nature, literature, historical usage, virtues, etc).
  4. Should be recognizable, but not extremely overused common.
  5. Nickname potential would be nice, but not required.
  6. Should have a good vibe to (whimsical, sporty, sleek feminine, etc).
  7. First-Middle-Last name flow is preferred, but First-Last flow is a must.
  8. Shouldn’t have any obvious teasing potential.

Let’s make the last name [name]Tennyson[/name]!

[name]Cassia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Adair[/name] [name]Louise[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Bronte[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Elowen[/name] [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Brooke[/name] [name]Seraphina[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]

[name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Blaise[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]Hale[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Dominic[/name] [name]Reeve[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Leonardo[/name] [name]Felix[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Marshall[/name] [name]Xavier[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]

  1. Nothing misspelled
  2. Nothing overly popular.
  3. Nothing that sounds pretentious, pretentious names really grate me.
  4. It must suit any type of person, from a bin man to a prime minister
  5. It must have cute nickname options
  6. No celebrity names (think [name]Shakira[/name], [name]Rihanna[/name] etc.)
  7. Bonus points for nice literary connections or family names.
  8. Nothing a child would find difficult to spell or say (think Appollonia etc)

[name]Daisy[/name], [name]Madeline[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Layla[/name] and [name]Luna[/name]

[name]Noah[/name], [name]Philip[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Samuel[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], and [name]Isaac[/name].

  1. The first names must all start with a different letter. I know how much I love both [name]Marlowe[/name] and [name]Miles[/name], but you only get one.
  2. If you misspell/make up the name, so help me, I will rip up that birth certificate.
  3. Easily pronounceable. I want the kid to be able to say his own name ASAP.
  4. Bonus points if it’s got a nice, relevant meaning. (But it’s not mandatory.)

Oh I love this thread. I don’t want to be too picky when it comes to picking names, but I definitely have some basic rules that I will follow.

1.Must be easy to spell or at least not have a bunch of spelling variations. I can handle [name]Emilia[/name]/[name]Amelia[/name], but I don’t think I’d ever use something like [name]Hailey[/name] just because you can spell lee so many ways (Ley, [name]Leigh[/name], [name]Lee[/name], [name]Lea[/name], Lie…).
2.Something that will age well.
3.No obvious teasing potential with the name or initials. No name is ever really safe from teasing, but again, nothing too obvious. I wouldn’t use something like [name]Hortensia[/name] because the first syllable is Hor.
4.Nothing too similar with other potential siblings. I’m fine with two kids’ names starting with the same letter(I would use [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] in a heartbeat), but I wouldn’t be like the Duggars and have every name start with J.
5. A celebrity or a celebrity kid having that name generally won’t prevent me from using it, however it can’t be something tied with one celebrity. I second @pinkballerina’s examples of [name]Shakira[/name] and [name]Rihanna[/name]. As far as celebrity kids go, I wouldn’t use [name]Blue[/name] or [name]Suri[/name].

  1. Easy to pronounce.
  2. Easy to spell.
  3. Something I love and adore, over just liking.
  4. No teasing potential.
  5. Has to sound well with he or she’s siblings.
  6. Flows with our last name.
  7. [name]Will[/name] age well.
  8. Not overly common, if it is and has multiple nicknames, try them. I have a super common name for my age and I always hated you couldn’t call me anything but [name]Erin[/name].
  9. Try and not have the initials match, if it happens with two of them it is fine.
  10. Make sure [name]Jason[/name] loves the name as much as me and has input too.
  1. Obvious to spell and pronounce (no popular variations)
  2. Must contain a “hope”. By which I mean, I want there to be something about the name that says your parents hope you will grow up to _______. Whether that is " be like a certain person" “live up to a meaning” “conduct yourself in such a way that you bring even greater honor to that name”.
  1. No creative spellings.
  2. Something that makes me feel light inside.
  3. A name which has some kind of significance to it, even if it’s not a family name (which a lot of my names are in some capacity) the name must be meaningful.
  4. [name]Will[/name] age well.
  5. Classic
  6. The name must have a saint in it somewhere, what can I say I’m Catholic :stuck_out_tongue:
  1. Easy to pronounce
  2. Easy to spell
  3. Good meaning
  4. Safe initials
  5. Not particularly common or popular
  6. [name]Honor[/name] family members (middle names can be exact but first names should be slightly different or with a different nickname)
  7. Age well
  8. Literary or historical reference preferred
  9. Flows with surname
  10. Sounds okay with potential sibling names
