I’m aware that most people tend to find your average hyphenated names rather tacky. But I was wondering, just out of curiosity, what your opinion might be if you encountered a more elabourate choice? For example, instead of [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]-[name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u], what would you say to a [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]-[name_u]Jean[/name_u] or an [name_m]Allen[/name_m]-[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]?
Using cutesy and rhyming choices for hyphenated names is quite standard but, if more formal and lengthy names were used instead, would a [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]-[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] be seen as more elegant in comparison to a [name_u]Riley[/name_u]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u], or just the same?
I’m not a fan of hyphenated names at all. It just seems like the person couldn’t decide on a name or they’re just pretentious. But that’s my opinion.
I’m not a fan of the hyphen. If you want to call your child [name_m]Allen[/name_m] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] put that name on their birth certificate as the first and middle name. The hyphen doesn’t really serve a purpose; in [name_u]America[/name_u] at least, all the hyphen does is cause the name to become Allengregory or Rowanaubrey on legal documents.
I like them. I’m actually considering a hyphenated name for my baby if it’s a girl ”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hyphenated name like this used for a boy, at least not in the United States. In some cultures, I suppose it wouldn’t be too weird, like in [name_f]France[/name_f] where double names are quite common, but otherwise I think the names would work better as a first and middle combo. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you add in another middle name, you can still call them by their first name and first middle as a nickname. In a nutshell, double barreled names seem overly complicated, particularly if they’re of the more extravagant variety.
I don’t like hyphenated names. I think they look funny, no matter what two names you want to tack together. I like double names, and we even have some on our lit, but I would never hyphenate them. If you want him to be [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u], then just use them as separate names (maybe even thrown in another MN), but call him by both. I think that is the best. It looks much sleeker than a hyphen. Also, when he grows up, if he prefers one name over the other then he can use it more simply, rather than having to explain the hyphen to everyone.
