So, our sweet wee girl will be here in just over 5 weeks. We’ve decided on [name]Maris[/name] as her first name and have told our family (not friends-we just deflect) and have recieved positive responses (phew!).
I am still having a hard time commiting to a middle name.
My favorite combo had been [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name] but I’m afraid she’ll hate it when she’s older (My oldest daughter, [name]Juliette[/name], planted this in my head). So then I was thinking [name]Maris[/name] [name]Quinn[/name] as all of our other kids have Irish middle names and [name]Quinn[/name] is cute and spunky but it feels a little…benign, maybe?
So tell me, honestly please, what you think of these potential [name]Maris[/name] combos:
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Honor[/name] (does this work at all?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Mercy[/name] (does the alliteration work? Does it carry too much gravity?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Margot[/name] (again, alliteration? Is it too serious? Does “[name]Mar[/name] [name]Mar[/name]” bother you?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Poppy[/name] (on the flip side: is it too whimsical? Is [name]Poppy[/name] a “real” name?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Ruby[/name](too much “R” sound?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Isobel[/name] (runs together?)
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name] (a little more palitable than [name]Odette[/name]?)
I would love your input and/or suggestions. You won’t hurt my feelings so feel free to be be brutally honest.
I’ll try to make this my last [name]Maris[/name] post as I’m sure I’ve exhausted you all
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Honor[/name] - I am not a big fan of word names such as [name]Honor[/name]. I find it a little tacky. Sorry
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Mercy[/name] - Same as above
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Margot[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] both names! But I don’t love them together, I don’t think they flow well.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Poppy[/name] - I think it kind of works, though I would have never thought of it.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] - Same as above
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Isobel[/name] - Nice, though [name]Isobel[/name] is rather popular
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name] - I like this
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name] - Actually my favorite
Thanks for your reply and your honesty.
Also, I apppreciate your suggestions.
I do like [name]Maris[/name] [name]Cosette[/name] and have considered it but thought it might be a little “s” heavy. The others are lovely but none that I think my husband would agree to.
I still love [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name], I don’t think your daughter would hate it any more than any other kid that goes through the phase of hating their name. I don’t care for [name]Quinn[/name] at all, it’s way too masculine for me. (My step-son is [name]Quinn[/name] ([name]Quintin[/name], but called [name]Quinn[/name] almost exclusively by us). Maybe another simple Irish middle? [name]Maris[/name] [name]Aoife[/name]? [name]Maris[/name] [name]Oona[/name], [name]Maris[/name] [name]Aine[/name]?
Thanks, flick.
[name]Quinn[/name] isn’t my favorite, either. I think if we use it, it would just be because I can’t find anything else that makes me swoon but I chicken out on using [name]Odette[/name].
I’ve thought about [name]Maris[/name] [name]Orla[/name], [name]Maris[/name] [name]Niamh[/name], and [name]Maris[/name] [name]Tierney[/name] but I don’t [name]LOVE[/name] any of them. Although [name]Maris[/name] [name]Niamh[/name] is pretty lovely…
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name] - still my favorite, it’s beautiful
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]- okay, what about [name]Maris[/name] Quinnlyn
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Honor[/name] - I really like this actually, has a very elegant feel
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Mercy[/name] - alliteration does work but I think these are too similar with the m, r, and s sounds
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Margot[/name] - I like this one too, it’s fun!
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Poppy[/name] - this one is okay, it’s a bit Disney but still beautiful
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] - I don’t like this one for some reason, I like both names but they don’t fit
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Isobel[/name] - the is-is clashes
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name] - beautiful, probably my second choice to [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name], gorgeous!
Thanks, sugarfoot (cute user name ;))
I hadn’t really considered that she might hate her name but our oldest daughter ([name]Juliette[/name]) says she HATES having a name that no one else has and that [name]Maris[/name] is “bad enough” but to add on [name]Odette[/name] (which she thinks is just odd) is too much. I’m not going to let her make the decision for me, I just don’t want to burden our kid with a doubly uncommon name, you know?
I’m really liking [name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name]! I might even like it better than [name]Odette[/name]. I think it is by far your best choice of the selections you gave. Good luck!
I actually really like [name]Maris[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]. I think it flows well and is cute and spunky.
I like [name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name] too and I think [name]Colette[/name] is common and cute enough to work.
What about [name]Maris[/name] Aiofe or [name]Maris[/name] [name]Kathleen[/name] or [name]Maris[/name] [name]Siobhan[/name] or [name]Maris[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] or [name]Maris[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Maris[/name] [name]Harper[/name]…
I love [name]Maris[/name]!
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Honor[/name] (does this work at all?)- No. All the names on this list with the exception of [name]Isobel[/name] are 2 syllables, so you have to be very careful with the rhythm and sounds. Too much similarity isn’t good. In this case, I think the intonations being in the same place- MA-ris HON-or- makes the combo sound clunky.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Mercy[/name] (does the alliteration work? Does it carry too much gravity?)- Same rhythm problems as [name]Honor[/name], but compounded by lots of alliteration (all of the consonants repeat.) Definitely not my favorite combo.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Margot[/name] (again, alliteration? Is it too serious? Does “[name]Mar[/name] [name]Mar[/name]” bother you?)- This I actually really like. The intonation of [name]Margot[/name] is on the second syllable, which makes the rhythm much more pleasant. The “[name]Mar[/name]” sounds are different, so they don’t sound odd to me.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Poppy[/name] (on the flip side: is it too whimsical? Is [name]Poppy[/name] a “real” name?)- Eh. It’s fine, just not my taste.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Ruby[/name](too much “R” sound?)- Like [name]Poppy[/name], alright, but not my favorite.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Isobel[/name] (runs together?)- I like the three syllables in [name]Isobel[/name]. The “iss-Is” is a little bit awkward, but overall I think it’s a good combination.
*[name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name] - Last for the best! I absolutely love [name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name]- it’s interesting, fun to say, and has a great variety of sounds. Definitely the winner for me!
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Maris[/name] [name]Odette[/name]. I much prefer it to [name]Collette[/name], but that could be because I’ve known so many Collettes. Someone suggested [name]Maris[/name] Quinnlyn, which I also think is gorgeous.
