~ your thoughts on our top two

hello friends :white_heart:

after many name chats with my partner over the last few weeks, we’ve decided our tip top two are…

silas jay 🌲

silas is a name i’ve loved for ages. it’s gentle and biblical, but has a fun and folksy feel. it also subtly honors our shared love of hiking and the outdoors, as well as his great grandfather sylvester. jay is my partner’s middle name, and i really want to honor him. jay is also a bird name, which holds meaning for us separately!

ada dorothy🪻

i’ve had so many signs lately that ada is my future baby girl’s name. it honors a family name, adelaide, and is a biblical palindrome, just like my name, hannah! dorothy is my great grandma’s name. i love the meaning “gift of God”, which my great grandma definitely was- and our daughter definitely would be.

now for your opinion! i’d love to hear your thoughts on these two. what do you like about them? what do you not like? do they pair well as siblings? what imagery do they give? and anything else you’d like to tell me.

thank you all!

I love [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is a top favorite of mine. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u] isn’t really my personal style and I’m not 100% sold on the flow but meaning is more important than flow and I love it for you. I do really like [name_u]Jay[/name_u] being a bird name. Both names go perfectly together as siblings and I really love how special and meaningful they both are for you.

i love these both!! silas and ada are both such underrated gems. i think they both flow nicely and go together pretty well- silas jay strikes me as more modern than ada dorothy for sure but it doesn’t make them too different to be siblings for me! “ada and silas” sounds so sweet. the two-syllable, uncommon vintage thread between them makes the names similar enough to go together beautifully and the middle names are different enough to make each child feel unique and not too matchy!

they both give me rural midwest overalls and straw hats vibes, the kinds of kids who grow up surrounded by tall dry grass and come home with mud on their knees and pinecones and pebbles in their pockets. on its own silas is very glasses and books and staying inside but jay gives it a little soccer-playing music-loving edge. this is a bit niche but silas has also always reminded me of the septimus heap books which are magical adventurous nature-loving childrens’ books i read as a kid and i love that!! they always felt very down-to-earth and tactile in a way that other childrens’ fantasy wasn’t really. i think ada dorothy is a bit quieter and old-fashioned. it reminds me of pigtail braids and patching up old clothes by hand and running ahead on the trail. an ada dorothy in my head would be curious and contemplative and always laughing.

What a gorgeous set!

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u] is bright, woodsy and lovely - I’m thinking of [name_u]Jay[/name_u] birds, autumn walks, and crunchy leaves! It feels meaningful and lovely, sharp and cool!

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is warm, and cosy but with plenty of strength and good associations. [name_u]Love[/name_u] how [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a palindrome like your name and this all round has such a vintage, cosy feel - a cottage in the country, hot chocolate, and muddy boots!

I think they’re wonderful as siblings!

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u] – This is lovely! There’s a lovely little boy at my church named [name_m]Silas[/name_m], and I think it is just darling! Wearable for a cute kid or a handsome grown-up! I don’t like the nickname [name_u]Si[/name_u], but I think it’s avoidable. [name_u]Jay[/name_u] flows very well with [name_m]Silas[/name_m].

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] – Both names are so charming, and I especially love the simple elegance of [name_f]Ada[/name_f]. The only thing I don’t love about the combo is the close proximity of the Ds, but it isn’t a deal-breaker, and I wouldn’t change it considering the significance of both names.

Lovelovelove the combos! Especially because you both love them and the names also hold so much meaning to you. :sunny:

@sammaegre thank you for your input! isn’t dorothy a stunner? and as for your thoughts on silas, i completely agree- i’ve never really liked one syllable middles for boys. our other ideas are silas franklin and silas victor, both would be just as meaningful for us, and are up for debate! my partner’s last name is long and a bit of a mouthful, too, and the short middle seems to work when the whole name is said.

@kidpix21 thank you, mary! this means so much coming from you!

@jadzianoel oh my goodness! thank you for this, truly. we’re planning on raising a family in the very rural west where my family is from- so this fits to a tee. i’ve never heard of those books (i was a boxcar children fan, myself) but i’ll give them a look-at. they sound adorable!

@Greyblue i love your imagery for this set. that is exactly how i picture silas jay! we’re nature lovers and when we found that both names carry a woodsy meaning we knew it was right! and for ada dorothy, oh, your description is making me so broody. i love a gentle vintage name with a cozy feel!

@Mary_Rose thank you, dear!

thank you all! :sun_with_face:

@may.rose i love that you know a silas! i’ve never met one, but would love to! we like si for its cowboy feel, but probably wouldn’t call him that exclusively, so i’m glad that you think that’s avoidable- silas is just so lovely, i’d hate if everyone shortened it! i agree about the d’s in ada dorothy, but since i thought of the combo a few months ago it’s grown on me, and i think it almost gives it a sing-song feel!

@Parfait_de_Roses thank you so much! i agree; when you’ve found a name with so much meaning, it’s all the more special!

thank you both! :ear_of_rice:

I absolutely love them and they’re beautiful together! Both so gentle, woodsy and vintage. I’m seeing cosy blankets and stories by the fire, a homemade tree house, treasure troves of collected leaves and feathers, licking the cake batter off a wooden spoon, family heirlooms, the scent of pine forests, carving pumpkins (maybe I’m just getting excited about autumn but there’s something so cosy about these names…dare I say even festive perhaps…although [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Jay[/name_u] also reminds me of long summer days, too)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here are my thoughts-

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] Jay-I really like [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. It’s cowboy-ish but a sweet kind who is reading in the corner after working in the field. It’s easy to say & spell but not terribly over done. It works well on every age. It doesn’t have any nns except for [name_u]Si[/name_u], which comes naturally & is pretty cute. I love that it honors Great Grandpa too. [name_u]Jay[/name_u] isn’t typically my cup of tea, but nice to honor Dad & I love the bird reference.

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] Dorothy-I love your reasoning for [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] & I like [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] too. I also love [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], but [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] sounds better. I’m usually picking about repeating ‘d’ sounds in combos, but it’s totally fine. Especially since [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is such a special name to you. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is darling. I worry a little bit about it getting popular like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] (which I also find beautiful, but so over done), but it’s still a lovely classic none the less. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is sweet & quiet but very bright & clever.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

@persephonescrown this whole paragraph just makes me smile! it’s funny- i’ve always been more drawn to autumnal names, so it makes a lot of sense! thank you for your input!

@MichelleM thank you so much for your kind words, and this beautiful imagery. silas reading by a field when he’s done with his work? oh, i love it! my partner is a farmer and it sounds just like him.

thank you both! :sunflower:
