[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
This is just hypothetical, but with the name [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] (ih-von) (kind of like saying if-on but with a v), could the nickname [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] work?
Not for a child. I know there’s a slight pronunciation difference, but if you knew someone who went by [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] who then you later found out it was a nickname from their middle name [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f], would you be surprised/angry/not thinking it works as a nickname?
Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
I really, really hope it could work.
Would I be surprised? Yes, a little - but more in like a ‘that’s unexpected’ rather than angry or that doesn’t work kind of way I’d just think ‘cool’ and move on.
(if it helps, I’ve known someone who went by B!ll, whose name was [name_u]Claude[/name_u] W!lliam - he got on fine)
I wouldn’t be angry, but I probably would be surprised and probably a little confused. I think following some initial confusion, there wouldn’t be any issue with it. But still, if [name_u]Patsy[/name_u] can be a nn for [name_f]Martha[/name_f], why not [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f]?
Angry? Absolutely not. I was a bit surprised reading the title, but pleasantly so. I think [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] totally works for [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f], just unexpected.
I personally don’t find [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] intuitive as a nickname for [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] at all. But, if someone introduced themselves as [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ivy[/name_u], I wouldn’t think twice about it. Many people I’ve met go by their middle names, choose their own names, etc. so it doesn’t faze me.
I love [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f], I think it’s genius! It totally works for me. I have the same reaction as when someone on here suggested [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as a nn for [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] - that’s inspired, I’m on board!
Well not really but I would expect a story or something since why? Ok there’s a sort of I sound in [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] and a V but does that get you [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]? The sound is closer to [name_f]Livvy[/name_f] with a short I.
Where I’m from [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is pronounced Ee-vahn, more like how the [name_u]French[/name_u] would say [name_m]Yves[/name_m]. So I don’t see [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] as too intuitive. Defs wouldn’t be angry though
I would wonder if perhaps [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] is the middle name as it isn’t intuitive to me as a nickname. Then would wonder why they didn’t go straight to [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] instead of naming her [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f]?
