Zazie is a [name_m]French[/name_m] nickname for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], pronounced “ZAZ-ee”, and made famous by the [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] Queneau novel Zazie dans le métro.
My husband loves this name, and I do too in theory, but I’ve always though it a bit… I don’t know, “ta-DAAA!” But I’ve recently come across one in real life (a friend of a friend on FB, so I don’t know if it’s a nn or not) and it wears surprisingly well!
I’m usually all for nicknames as full names, but Zazie doesn’t really do it for me. Mostly I thin because I have no idea what is would be a nickname for (I know, [name_m]French[/name_m] one for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] - but not that many people will know that).
If you truly adore it, I think it’s usable. But personally I’d use it as a nickname.
I think it’s not substantial enough to stand on its own, but it would make a sweet nickname for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] or [name_f]Isadora[/name_f].
It just makes me think of the Big Bang [name_m]Theory[/name_m], when [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u] adopts all those cats that he names after the Manhattan Project scientists…except for Zazzles, because he’s just so…“zazzy”…
I really like it as a nickname, but I don’t think it has enough substance to be a full name. Although, perhaps I’d feel differently if I didn’t live in [name_u]America[/name_u] where nicknames aren’t as common as full names. It reminds me of [name_f]Zazu[/name_f], the bird from The [name_m]Lion[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m].
Usually I don’t mind and really like nickname names as full names but Zazie is a bit too much. I can’t imagine it as a full name, even though it is cool, quirky and zippy. But it does make an awesome nickname!
It makes me think of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], 1920s flappers, and “[name_u]Jazz[/name_u] hands!” for some reason. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] or [name_f]Zadie[/name_f] (as in [name_f]Zadie[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m])?
I think it’s very cute for a young child. I can’t see it aging well for the reason you mentioned, but it could be a great family nickname for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] (or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Suzana[/name_f], etc.).
Thanks all, you’ve basically confirmed my initial thoughts about it: nice and zippy as a nn, but too insubstantial for a full name. Thanks for the extra suggestions of long forms @namenculture! Zazie for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] would be so unexpected and fun
