Zelda! Connotations?

DH and I are huge nerds… Expecting a girl in [name_f]February[/name_f], and of course this name comes up.

My rules is it has to be a real name, classical, and be on the charts in our province, but just not too high n the list.

It’s real and classical; the wife of writer [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], and used by [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], and in the past three years 3-6 babies had this name. Bonus points for being from a great video game…

DH LOVES this name. It’s the first name I’ve gotten butterflies from, thinking about it. We are a more soft spoken people, though, and worry about backlash and taunting from friends and family.

A couple we know of are huge video game fiends and named their daughter Rydia ([name_f]Lydia[/name_f] with an R) after a Final [name_f]Fantasy[/name_f] character. It being unique, when it gets commented on they own it, and say it’s from a favorite game that brought us together. And if there’s mean taunting, they joke and say “[name_f]Hope[/name_f] the company will give us free games for life!” And usually it’s dropped.

We love the name. But is our small city in [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], Western [name_f]Canada[/name_f] ready for it?? (or does it even matter?)

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a beautiful, strong, intelligent name. While some may think of a video game, your daughter will bring her own light with the name. If people hear her name and are at first put-off, they will grow to only hear “[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]” and think of your beautiful little one. It sounds like you and your husband have found the name you daughter is meant to have. I would be brave and give her this amazing first gift, the one that feels more right to you than anyone else. I love names that nobody else in my life does, but I know that when the time comes, they will love my little [name_u]Fable[/name_u] even if they would rather her name simple be [name_f]Faye[/name_f]. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is nothing short of stunning, and I hope you decide to follow your hearts with it, whether your community is ready or not. If they aren’t ready, the most important thing is that you are, and everybody else will fall in line.

Oh, and I absolutely think of Zelda Fitzgerald, who was an amazing woman. She had been a writing influence in my life for as long as I can remember.

I think [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a lovely name and totally usable. It’s an old name that predates the video game series. If people ask about it, you could mention [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m].

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is pretty and totally usable, in my opinion! It sounds like a pretty badass name, to be honest =P

I think the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is wonderful! Plus I think the nickname Zellie is cute, and Z would be a really cool nickname option as well. It does make me think of The [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], but I consider that to be a positive thing since I love video games.

Thanks all!! The game has strong family ties, esp with DH and his dad so it just might be a contender.
