Zeroing in

Forgive me, I know I’ve had a few very similar posts lately, but I really want to get this name - probably the last I’ll get to choose - right.

We’re still thinking [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is the probable choice for first name. What are your honest thoughts on it? Is it too stuffy? Too English for an American boy? Too [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] with big brother [name_m]Peter[/name_m]?

Other contenders for first name were [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. Any of those deserve a second look?

My husband is pretty set on the middle name [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] even though [name_m]Charles[/name_m] trounced it on the NB poll. Is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] OK? We also like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Roger[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m] and still [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. Might do a poll on these a bit later, but for now just really want to know thoughts on [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m].

Thanks!

First reaction is that [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is a bit stuffy… [name_f]IMo[/name_f]. You can do classy, old fashion names without going too “Grandpa”. My favorite frofrom your list is [name_m]George[/name_m]. Probably because I know a little boy we call[name_u]Georgie[/name_u], and he’s super cute

[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] isn’t my style- but I don’t think we share styles so that isn’t a problem, it isn’t a bad name and I wouldn’t worry too much about it being out of place, it’ll become natural to family and peers etc. (Is a bit [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] though, honestly wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t said). Came in to comment that I am not keen on [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] at all, I feel the endings clash in their similarity.

I wouldn’t have thought of the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection, but you could consider [name_m]Edison[/name_m] if that would bother you and you’re not sure about [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. I personally like [name_m]George[/name_m] more than [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] love love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]! And I especially love the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection (with brother [name_m]Peter[/name_m]! how cute!). Plus, it has cute nicknames, like [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] or [name_m]Eddy[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is a very strong name. Go for it!!

I really love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m]. Very strong and handsome, and I think it fits perfectly with your other children’s names.

Thanks for the feedback, both positive and negative. It’s nice to get a sense of what reactions will be since I’m not sharing this with friends or family.

@ko46, I’m not wild about [name_m]Edison[/name_m] - not really into surname names generally. [name_m]Edward[/name_m] is still on the list though.

On the “too English” question - is it more classic standard that is also popular in [name_f]England[/name_f] ([name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m]) or over the top English ([name_m]Giles[/name_m], [name_m]Nigel[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m])?

I’d also put [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] on the very English side, but close to the line if that makes sense.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Dizzy,

You have some lovely names on your list. I can see why you’re struggling to decide. As for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], I don’t think it’s too stuffy; I find it to be sweet and a little nerdy in a good way. I think [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] works. That both names end in -d is something only us name nerds will notice. [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] go by [name_m]Eddy[/name_m], Ted, or [name_m]Ned[/name_m]? If you do like nicknames, I’d like to add [name_m]Eb[/name_m]/Ebby from the initials E. B. I wouldn’t worry about the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection - it’s not like your girls are named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Susan[/name_f]! From the other names you’ve mentioned, I really love [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] as a first name alternative.

Probably [name_m]Ned[/name_m] as a nickname but if it’s anything like my other kids I’ll use the full version and nickname interchangeably. [name_m]Ned[/name_m] and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

I think I commented on another thread of yours. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is my favorite boy name actually! Sweet, unique but familiar, has great nicknames, not stuffy or too British at all! As for the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection, I doubt most people his age would know of it.
I love [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] too! [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is a handsome combo. However if you’re worried about the name being stuff I’d pick another middle name, like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] or [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. Good luck!

First off, I love your style and all your kid’s names! All of your options for first names are great except for [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] together and the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection makes it even cuter (I don’t think too many people will notice it anyway)

Oh, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m]!!! That’s probably one of the best combos I’ve ever seen on this site! I don’t think it is stuffy for an American boy at all. I’d love to meet one! Also, the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] thing…I don’t see it being a problem. I don’t know how relevant that association is anymore, but even if you were to read your kids the books every single day, I don’t think it is a dealbreaker.

Honestly? Yes, too stuffy. I like [name_m]Edward[/name_m] much more because so much nickname potential ([name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], Ted, [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] etc.)

But [name_m]George[/name_m] is my absolute favourite on your list <3

I love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] but am not sure of [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] as the mn. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is my favorite. If you are looking for other options, my dad’s name was [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. I think the nn [name_u]Win[/name_u] is really cool.

I love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] for your family. It doesn’t feel stuffy to me, more cuddly in a sweet grandpa way.

[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is great though [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Roger[/name_m] is sublime!

I’ve commented on previous posts of yours, but I just love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] so much. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is so handsome, sweet, and cuddly. I’ve never thought of [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] as too ‘stuffy’, it actually seems pretty fresh to me as I’ve known a bunch of Edwards but no [name_m]Edmunds[/name_m].
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is just so soft, but strong and friendly and lovable. I think it’s such a perfect combo.
As for the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] connection, I think its kinda cute! I agree that most people wouldnt notice (and even if they did, it’s not a bad association imo), and I think it could be an adorable connection between the boys.

I also like [name_m]Philip[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], and [name_m]George[/name_m]. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] definitely gets my vote though.

(also - I’m American and I dont think its too English at all!)

I love [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and would use it in a heartbeat. I also love it as [name_m]Peter[/name_m]'s brother, and while occasionally [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] might come up it’s not a bad reference, and you can just laugh about the coincidence? It’s not a big deal at all to me. I voted for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] in your poll - I love these 2 together and it’s much more interesting than [name_m]Charles[/name_m].

I adore [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and I don’t think it’s too stuffy or English. It’s on my list as a middle but I’d happily use it as a first too. It gives me a bookish, sweet little boy feel. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] sounds distinguished and interesting, more so than something like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m].

Of your other options, I like [name_m]Philip[/name_m] a lot also, but maybe not with brother [name_m]Peter[/name_m] already having a “P” initial name.
