Wow, so far it has been extremely difficult to choose names for our baby due in, oh…two weeks:o We don’t know the gender and initially struggled with a boy name, but are now also second guessing our girl name. We have always liked the name [name]Zora[/name] but are hesitant to use it now due to the Spanish meaning of zorra (basically sl*t). We travel frequently and our public schools include a daily Spanish class beginning in kindergarten, so…it seems like a risky choice, no? So now we are considering [name]Cosima[/name], Saphronia, and [name]Aurelie[/name]/[name]Aurelia[/name] in addition to [name]Zora[/name]. Thoughts? Comments? Preferences?
[name]Do[/name] you like [name]Zara[/name]? [name]Cosima[/name] and [name]Aurelia[/name] are my favorites from your list. I like [name]Sophronia[/name], but not Saphronia… Was that a typo? It’s hard for me to choose because they’d all be great choices.

I have waffled between Saphronia and [name]Sophronia[/name]. I like [name]Sophronia[/name] better but don’t want it to be shortened to [name]Sophie[/name] (cute but way, way popular in my area and the name of a good friend’s daughter). Saphronia we would possibly nn [name]Saffron[/name].
[name]How[/name] about Zosime? (Can be legitimately pronounced “[name]ZO[/name]-sih-may” or “[name]ZO[/name]-zih-mee.”) It’s ancient Greek, the feminized form of Zosimus, a name borne by several saints and a pope.
I think it’s quite graceful, close to [name]Cosima[/name] and [name]Zora[/name]… Though I like [name]Zora[/name], I agree that it’s a bit iffy if you’ll be around a lot of Spanish speakers.
[name]Aurelia[/name] is beautiful. So smooth and golden.
I wouldn’t pick [name]Zora[/name] if your child will be exposed to many Spanish speakers. [name]Zara[/name] is on my list, but I too am a bit wary of the clothing store association. What about [name]Zola[/name]? It is Italian origin and was popular at the turn of the century. [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Aurelie[/name]/[name]Aurelia[/name]. [name]Cosima[/name] is very intruiging.
Ooh, I like Zosime. Never considered that one and it has a good meaning, survivor. That’s definitely a contender.
[name]Zora[/name] aslo means [name]Dawn[/name] in croatian and serbian. It’s spelled [name]Zora[/name] like [name]Dawn[/name] is spelled [name]Dawn[/name].
But Cosima is nice.
Aw, that is too bad about [name]Zora[/name]/[name]Zorra[/name]. I knew Zorro is fox in Spanish, I didn’t know [name]Zorra[/name] meant sl*t! I would avoid it, given that unfortunate fact.
I absolutely love [name]Cosima[/name]. I really like [name]Aurelia[/name]/[name]Aurelie[/name]. I know a little girl named [name]Aurelia[/name]. I think it’s very pretty and it would be great in heavily Spanish speaking areas. The little girl I know goes by Aury, though there are lots of good nicknames for that one. I have never heard of Zosime, and I really like that one, too.
What about [name]Zoraida[/name]? I knew a [name]Zoraida[/name] in the Domenican Republic. I have never met another and she was a grandmother, so I don’t think it’s terribly common. It is close to [name]Zora[/name]. She is also a character in [name]Don[/name] [name]Quixote[/name] and the name means “enchanting woman.”
[name]Zora[/name] and [name]Cosima[/name] would make an awesome sibset! But I definitely understand your hesitation re: [name]Zora[/name]. I think I’d probably back off on it if I were in your position.
I love [name]Cosima[/name]. I would definitely go with this. I also adore [name]Aurelie[/name] / [name]Aurelia[/name] (I prefer [name]Aurelia[/name]; I knew an [name]Aurelie[/name] who was totally adorable, but everyone also seemed to pronounce her name as “orally”). I think Saphronia is interesting and like the nn [name]Saffron[/name] - Saphronia “[name]Saffron[/name]” is really cute.
What about something like [name]Zorina[/name] where she could go by [name]Zora[/name] if she chose to?
[name]Zola[/name] or zoria or [name]Zaria[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name] is such a nice name with history and meaning.
This is the first I’ve heard of that translation, and that breaks my heart! I still am pretty sure I’d use [name]Zora[/name]. ([name]Even[/name] though we live in [name]Texas[/name]!) I’m still very early in my pregnancy and have no idea if it’s a girl or boy yet, but I’ve already been calling the little bean that! I like the Slavic connection (and the Russian mythology with [name]Zorya[/name]), and I also used to have a Czech aunt that called me "[name]Dawn[/name],’ (despite that not being my name…)
It actually looks like “zorra” translates to “prostitute” and also “fox” in Spanish.
