I started playing with names from the 1930s SSA List, seeing if I could refresh some. WDYT?
[name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Patricia[/name_f] [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f] [name_f]Brighton[/name_f]
[name_f]Carol[/name_f] [name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Briette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Winsome[/name_f]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariel[/name_f] [name_f]Hava[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlene[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u] Helsie
[name_f]Charlene[/name_f] [name_f]Adora[/name_f]
I like:
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
The others, not so much ; )
Wow! I do think [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Briette[/name_f] makes the name sound more modern, like a little girl’s name. You really managed to update all the names using the middle names to make them sound fresher, even though the datedness of names never bothers me anyway. I would use [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] in a heartbeat.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are:
[name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Briette[/name_f]
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
This is a new idea I’ve never really thought of! I think it would be interesting to try it with another decade like the '70s.
[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother is [name_u]June[/name_u] and I love it for an older classic but modern name.
[name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
Helsie
[name_f]Charlene[/name_f]
[name_f]Adora[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] Helsie
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] is lovely or [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u].
I love [name_f]Cora[/name_f].
I love a lot of these first names, haha! Combination wise, I like;
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Briette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Winsome[/name_f] - not crazy about the middle, but I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
Wow, thank you so much. I love playing with names so it’s nice when it kind of inspires someone to play around with old decades, too. The 70s would be interesting and fun to play with.
I think I prefer old-fashioned names with more old-fashioned middles.
[name_u]Love[/name_u]:
[name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] (I also love [name_f]Marlena[/name_f]), [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] and Helsie. [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f] and Helsie are my absolute favourites: they’re wonderful!
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f], [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] [name_f]Hava[/name_f], [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Estella[/name_f] and [name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f] are my favourite combinations, [name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f] in particular.
I think [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Doris[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Essie[/name_f]’, [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] ‘Ing’ / [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Mallie[/name_f]’, Helsie [name_f]Doris[/name_f] and [name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Marlene[/name_f] would also make lovely combinations.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite 1930’s names: [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mitzi[/name_f]), [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Dot[/name_f]), [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Fancy[/name_f]), [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Lolly[/name_f] or [name_f]Dolly[/name_f]), [name_f]Norma[/name_f], [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Gerry[/name_u]), [name_u]June[/name_u] (nn [name_f]Juni[/name_f]), [name_f]Marlene[/name_f], [name_f]Thelma[/name_f], [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Ree[/name_f]), [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f]), [name_f]Roberta[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Bertie[/name_u]), [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mitzi[/name_f]), [name_u]Billie[/name_u], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Patty[/name_f], [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] / [name_u]Johnnie[/name_u].
I find most of them, even paired with more modern type names, feel extremely dated. I like four of the combos and think in these combos [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Judith[/name_f] look/feel a lot fresher/contemporary…
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Judith[/name_f]
I think [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] (particularly when called [name_u]Rue[/name_u]) and [name_f]Helena[/name_f] work well today, but the likes of [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] and [name_f]Patricia[/name_f] just do not feel fresh at all anymore.
Combos I like:
[name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Carol[/name_f] [name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f] [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlene[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
Names I like, but I think need different combos:
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
oooh the 70s would definitely be a good one! I’ve been contemplating one for the 1890’s - I’ve pretty much got all the names on my list already
I think these would work:
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Brighton[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Briette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
Helsie
[name_f]Adora[/name_f]
**BTW, I applaud your effort to bring the old names back!
I like:
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlene[/name_f]
[name_f]Adora[/name_f]
THANK YOU! That’s why I did this!! Oh, you totally get it. Better & more refreshing than nowadays. It’s incredible to revive lovely names from ‘unpopular’ eras!! I still like the romantic [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], but [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Judith[/name_f], & [name_f]Carol[/name_f] are so unfamiliar, so womanly. A palette of new/old names to paint with. YAY! It would be so much fun to revive names from every era.
