2 middle names? Logistical issues?

Hi Berries!

Not TTC but definitely thinking about naming since my SO and I have been talking about names a lot more recently.

I’m all for having two middle names. [name_m]Even[/name_m] my dogs have two! I’m a longtime name nerd and the thought of choosing only one first and middle is scary! [name_f]My[/name_f] SO is opposed to it. He thinks it would be more of a headache than it would be worth, for example, on passports and other such documents. But, besides the name nerd angle, he also has a really common last name and I feel having an extra middle name would be an asset especially since neither of us is interested in choosing super rare first names.

Can anyone share their experiences either for themselves or their own children? I’m willing to change my mind but I would rather explore the idea first. For context, we are in the US.

Thankfully we have a similar style in mind overall so the negotiation will be more about the number of names. (So the idea of me accepting one middle name but I get to choose it isn’t really applicable.)

Thanks!!

I have two middle names!!

They’re both on my passport and other important documents, but my mum didn’t tell my school about it, so that isn’t an issue.

Length wise, my first name is 6 letters long and both my middle names and surname
have at least 8 letters, so in total my name is very long. I didn’t like it when i was younger but now I don’t mind  it actually comes in handy sometimes, because I can brag about it

Both my names are honour names, which I love. I think it is really cool that my name honours different people I care about.

All in all, I like having two middle names. You should totally go for it!

My daughter has 2 middle names. It has not been an issue yet! The two names are short enough to fit in the middle name slot on paperwork, but if they ask for an initial I just give them the initial of one of the middles.

If you like the idea, then go for it! I think it makes my daughter’s name extra special that she has an extra name and that her name is so beautiful and quirky. I was like you and didn’t want to choose just one middle!

Firstly naming is so hard completely understand why your already pondering on names especially as a name nerd!

So I’m having a baby girl in [name_u]February[/name_u] and am using two middle names for her in order to honour my daughter’s relatives on either side of her family (my late grandma & my daughter’s father late mother) currently the names I’m using to honour them are simple classics especially as she will have a hyphenated surname. I think it’s more important to honour relatives then stress about the logistics of having two middle names.

A lot of relatives of mine have two middle names they haven’t encountered any issues if that offers you and your SO any reassurance.

The only issue I would see is online forms or documents not having space for both middle names. Passports and official documents should have the whole name on them. Another thing is sometimes you are asked for middle initial, so you would have to choose one for that.

My husband has two last names because of the country he is from, and usually we only use his first last name if there is only space for one.

I’m in the US. I have 2 cousins with double middle names. Neither has had problems with it over the years, except for with one’s job. The US military will recognise no mn or one mn, but it won’t take two mns. :woman_shrugging:

Although I have to agree with @jenni_lynn91 as she does make some excellent points.
