2:: Piano-based story

Genre of [name_u]Story[/name_u]: Teen fiction, I guess, maybe with a little romance. [name_f]Music[/name_f] based.

Time Period/Location: Modern [name_u]Day[/name_u].

Brief Plot: Centers around piano; MC was very talented as a child, then stopped playing after her mom died. Several years later she meets up with some old friends and kind of gets pulled back into that world a bit.

Character 1:

Character Description: An 18-year-old girl; looks aren’t super important but she’s of Polish descent so I imagine blonde/light brown hair and light eyes. Pretty quiet, not very outgoing. She loves music but hasn’t touched a piano in years.

Who named the character: Named by her parents, who immigrated from Poland themselves before MC was born. They are very proud of their Polish heritage and raised MC and her brother in a largely Polish-speaking home.

Immediate Family (if relevant): Not really known, but I’m working with Nowak as a surname (supposedly super common in Poland but that doesn’t bother me), and right now I’m using Wiktoria for the mother.

Already Considered (if relevant): I really like [name_f]Nadia[/name_f], since it’s popular in Poland but also easily recognized/pronounced in English, and I fell that her parents would think about that and pick ‘easy’ names for their children.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]’t Suggest These Names: Nothing too specific except Wiktoria, since I’m using that as her mother.

Anything else?: Mostly I just want ‘easy’ Polish names, which are easy to recognize and pronounce in English but which still feel ‘European chic’ sort of.

Character 2:

Character Description: Younger brother of MC, around 10-11. Admires his older sister. Very quiet child, not into sports or trucks or any typical ‘boy’ things. Mostly likes reading/learning and also plays piano. Like MC, probably blonde/light brown haired and fair eyes.

Who named the character: Named by Polish parents, very proud of Polish heritage; he and MC grew up speaking mostly Polish at home.

Immediate Family (if relevant): Again, working with Nowak as a surname and Wiktoria as the mother.

Already Considered (if relevant): I thought about [name_m]Dawid[/name_m], which I like, but I’d also appreciate some more opinions.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]’t Suggest These Names: Nothing specific, but again, nothing to difficult for English speakers, like with MC.

Anything else?: See above (MC)

Character 3:

Character Description: 18-year-old male, also plays piano. Old friend of MC from her piano playing days, may or may not have a bit of a crush on her, but is also happy being friends. Very friendly but a bit theatrical and sometimes prone to ‘grand gestures’. A bit of a romantic.

Who named the character: British parents, living in [name_u]London[/name_u]. Fairly well-off (a.k.a. not two-middles-plus-a-double-barreled-surname people, but close). The parents are well-traveled and rather sophisticated; often abroad leaving their son in [name_u]London[/name_u].

Immediate Family (if relevant): Nothing decided.

Already Considered (if relevant): I thought about [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] but it wasn’t quite right. Maybe [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], but it didn’t seem to fit the character.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]’t Suggest These Names: None really. Suggest away!

Anything else?: Really I kind of want some ‘European chic’ boys name. Sophisticated, but not too out there.

Thanks in advance. I know it isn’t a lot to work with, but I’m the kind of person who needs names in order to do almost anything else with a story, so I need to get this sorted before I can do much else.

Character 1: I know of a Polish girl named [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], I think that’s very beautiful, although not very orthodox Polish.
Maybe [name_f]Filipa[/name_f], [name_f]Izabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Rozalia[/name_f], with the nn [name_f]Roz[/name_f].

Character 2: [name_m]Dawid[/name_m] is a good name, and as ‘easy’ as I see for Polish boys. The girl names are much more easily translated here.

Character 3: [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_f]Brighton[/name_f]

Thank you, katerinam!

  1. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] is lovely (I’ve met several [name_f]Claudia[/name_f]'s where I live, actually), but like you said, not very traditional Polish. I assume [name_f]Klaudia[/name_f] would be the Polish form, but I’m not really sure if it totally fits the character. I really like [name_f]Rozalia[/name_f], but I think I’d go with Rozia as a nickname since (from what I’ve read) that would be the traditional Polish nickname.

  2. I do really like [name_m]Dawid[/name_m], and that’s probably what I’ll end up using. Yeah, most Polish boys names are hard; the only ‘easy’ ones are ones that aren’t necessarily easily identifiable as Polish.

  3. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is nice, but I’d probably go with [name_m]Charles[/name_m] nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].

  1. I like [name_f]Adela[/name_f], which seems both traditional Polish but also ‘easy’ in English. I’ve never heard of [name_f]Zoya[/name_f], but it seems to be related to [name_f]Zofia[/name_f], which I’ve also considered.

  2. I really like [name_m]Jozef[/name_m], but [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] and [name_m]Piotr[/name_m] are cute too.

  3. I really like [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], and [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], especially the first two.

Thanks again!

I think it’s meant to be the equivalent of [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], yes, that makes sense. I guess I’ve never seen [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] as a Slavic name at all  Thanks for the help!

Thank you, peacheysmiles!

  1. I’ve always loved [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] (but wouldn’t probably use it on my own child, just because it’s a bit cumbersome for me), and [name_f]Katarzyna[/name_f] is a very pretty variant on [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. [name_f]Agata[/name_f] is nice too, and I like that it’s a bit shorter and wouldn’t necessarily require a nickname. I’ve never heard of [name_f]Janina[/name_f] and Biata, but they’re nice as well. [name_f]Alenka[/name_f] sounds a bit like a nickname itself, with the -enka ending.

  2. The only two I’m not sure about are [name_u]Dominik[/name_u] and [name_m]Kasper[/name_m], but I really like [name_m]Jakub[/name_m], and [name_m]Rafal[/name_m] is interesting. I’ve considered both [name_m]Jakub[/name_m] and [name_m]Pawel[/name_m], but I guess my concern with the spelling of [name_m]Pawel[/name_m] (and [name_m]Dawid[/name_m] for that matter) is that, even though it’s the correct Polish spelling, many people would be inclined to mispronounce it because of the W.

  3. Not so sure about [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], but I really like [name_u]Theo[/name_u] ([name_m]Theodore[/name_m]). [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is also on my list, because it is such a classic, and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is interesting as well.

Thank you!

Julia is currently the #1 girls name in Poland, and I know it’s been in the Top 100 there for years. It also happens to be my first name (and I’m Polish too), so that’s pretty cool. I was named after one of my (Polish) great-grandmothers.
