2022 SSA Name Data Analysis

Every year I like to do a deep dive into the SSA top 1000 names and analyze the most recent data, particularly what sounds are popular and how the trends compare to prior years. I’m a few months late but here is the 2022 analysis! Sorry it’s long – I couldn’t find a simpler way to organize it.

*All data is based on the top 1000. The percentages have total births (including beyond the top 1000) as the denominator but the numerator only includes names within the top 1000 so realistically every percentage would be slightly higher if names outside the top 1000 were taken into account.

7.15% of boys and 6.75% of girls received names in the top 10. Both of these percentages are lower than last year.

6.29% of girls received names ending in the ‘lee’ sound, and 3.09% received names ending in the ‘lynn’ sound. These are both lower than last year, which was also lower than the year before.

A significant 16.25% of girls received given names ending in an ‘ee’ sound. This doesn’t take into account how many girls likely also go by nicknames ending in the ‘ee’ sound but have different full names, so an average classroom probably has even more ‘ee’ ending names.

For boys, S endings are popular, with 6.40% of boys receiving names ending in the letter S. That number rises to 7.55% when names that end in the S sound but not the letter S are added (like Chase or Jace). This is a higher percentage than in 2020.

L endings are also popular for boys, with 4.99% of boys receiving names ending in the letter L. That becomes 5.17% when you include names that end in an L sound but not the letter L (like Kyle and Cole).

Unsurprisingly with the popularity of surname and occupation names, ‘er’ endings are also popular for boys, with 5.96% of boys receiving names ending with ‘er’. This rises to 6.84% when names that are pronounced with “er” endings but are spelled differently are added (like Connor and Taylor). However, this percentage has decreased each year I’ve calculated it.

  • Meanwhile, only 2.14% of girls received names ending in the ‘er’ sound (this includes all spellings, like Skylar and Taylor)

Other trendy endings for boys include ‘son’, ‘ton’, and ‘den’ endings. If you include alternate spellings (like Jaxon, Westyn, or Landyn), then 4.27% of boys received names ending in ‘son’, 2.46% received names ending in ‘ton’, and 3.05% received names ending in ‘den’.

Overall, 23.00% of boys received names with N ending sounds. This percentage has been gradually falling since I started calculating it back when the 2019 data came out.

About 2.78% of boys received names ending in the T sound – this is slightly up from 2020, but still lower than I expected.

3.17% of boys received names containing the cool letter X in 2022. Meanwhile only 0.58% of girls received names containing the letter X.

The letter L was extremely popular in girls’ names, with 534 of the top 1000 names containing the letter. These 534 names went to 36.87% of baby girls.

‘El’ beginnings are less popular than I expected – there are 28 feminine ‘El’ names in the top 1000, but they only went to 3.02% of baby girls. Meanwhile there were only 12 masculine ‘El’ names in the top 1000, which went to 1.71% of baby boys.

Word names have become slightly less popular this year for both boys and girls, which surprised me! I defined word names as names that are exact spellings of English words, where the name comes from the word – so something like Will or Drew doesn’t count as a word name because the names and words aren’t related. I didn’t include proper nouns, so cities/countries, planets, or constellations didn’t count as word names.

With this criteria, 9.15% of girls received exact word names. Another 1.67% received creatively-spelled word names (like Rayne), for a total of 10.82% of wordy names.

For boys, 8.10% received exact word names. Another 1.28% of boys received creatively-spelled word names (like Kyng), for a total of 9.38% of wordy names.

As far as unisex names go, there are 85 names in both the masculine and feminine top 1000

And as far as longevity and/or vintage revivals, 267 of the top 1000 girls’ names from 2022 also ranked in the 1922 top 1000. Meanwhile, an even higher 365 of the top 1000 boys’ names from 2022 also ranked in the 1922 top 1000. This included some that really surprised me – who knew that Nova, Chloe, Macie, Brady, Austin, Cruz, and King were on the charts a century ago? I certainly didn’t. 29.24% of girls received names ending in ‘a’ (including -ah endings) :arrow_up:

0.02% of girls received names ending in ‘u’ (the only ‘u’ ending girls’ name is Tru. Even counting Drew for the sound, it’s still 0.02%) :arrow_up:

= 21.34% of boys received vowel-ending names (including vowel-sounds with different last letters)

*O endings have finally taken over as the most popular vowel ending for boys! Every year I think it’s going to happen and it finally has!

Anyway, I hope you all find this as interesting as I do! The biggest surprise for me is that word names went to a smaller percentage of babies – I thought they would keep rising! Although I suppose it’s possible that many of the names outside the top 1000 are unusual word names :woman_shrugging: What did you find most interesting? Anything you’d like to see calculated in the future?

Ooh, this was fascinating - I loved reading about the different endings!! I tend to look at the registers at work, and can definitely see those stats reflected, even here.

@Greyblue Of course, glad you enjoyed! And the endings are always the most interesting to me too! Especially when I feel like an ending is popular and then I realize it only applies to such a small fraction of babies, like T endings for boys. And so cool that you see the stats reflected in real life!!

Thank you! I’m surprised to see [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] on there, that name has always felt super modern to me. It’s also interesting to see that most of my own list is on the 1922/2022 crossover list. Not super surprising given my general style, but a bit funny when I started reading and was like hold up, is this just my list?!

I actually had a great aunt Savanna/h (I have it in my head she spelled it without the H, but I’m not completely sure) but it does feel very modern to me, too. And fun that the shared list seemed so similar to your own!

Just… wow. I can’t think of a way to automate finding the creatively spelled word names, so I’m assuming you did that manually? That’s some commitment. (I just saw that you only did it for the Top 1000, but still.)

@Wandarine I did do that part manually (not the math, but finding the creative word names) – I just pasted the list with the percentages into Excel and pulled out the creatively spelled word names, then used Excel to do the math. It honestly didn’t take all that long!

@kidpix21 Thanks! And I know, right? I guess title names were in back then, too- I’m reminded that Earl, which feels so dated, is part of that trend. And Royal also feels old to me because of Almanzo’s brother in the Little House on the Prairie books. And Prince ranked both times as well!
