3 Week Old Won't Breastfeed?

First time mom here, back for more advice! [name_f]My[/name_f] little boy will be three weeks old tomorrow, and all of a sudden starting last night, he doesn’t want to breastfeed. Until now he has done fabulous- great latch and suck, the lactation nurse said he is so efficient. But last night he started this thing where he will latch on and start sucking and then stop and whine/cry, then start again and then cry some more. We thought he might have thrush because we can see white patches on the roof of his mouth. I called the dr on call and she said to wait it out through the night and see how he does. Well, the rest of the night he ate fine without any fussing! Then, first feeding of the morning, he started up again with the whining. I have no clue what to think of it. It seems he is doing it when he is really tired. We started him last week with pumped milk in a bottle for one feeding a night. When we gave him the bottle last night when he wouldnt take the breast, he ate andolutely fine. Not sure if its because he doesnt have to suck as hard and so it doesnt hurt? Or if this is his way of rebeling against the breast? Or if something is wrong? We are in another state staying with my mom, because I was having some issues with postpartum depression. We are coming home [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not sure what to do, it is really stressing me out! I feel bad for the little guy.

Sometimes they have a preference - for me my daughters have preference only when they are super tired. Maybe try to catch the signs of hunger earlier if you can instead of waiting til its too late or start a schedule & try feeding him before he gets really hungry.

Might be thrush, or maybe your breasts are letting down too fast or something? [name_m]Just[/name_m] wait & see over the next couple days.

Poor you, I found they tended to stop/start and generally faff around a bit as my supply increased and they were a bit ‘choked’ by the initial flow. Alternatively he might not be getting the immediate hit a bottle provides, either way try hand expressing a little before putting him to the breast and see if that helps. Mysterious little creatures, sometimes they just seem to like to suck, let go then wail ‘where is it???’. I hope things settle down for you, rest up and let people feed you and bring you drinks, you need them.
