School’s out and last term fried my brain, so I’ve been revisiting series of 1940s school stories I enjoyed as a kid - re-reading with my namenerd head on, I was struck by some interesting sibsets and names!
Main character is Nicola; her siblings are [name_m]Giles[/name_m], [name_f]Karen[/name_f] ‘Kaye’, [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (on a girl!), [name_f]Ann[/name_f], [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] ‘Ginty’, [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] ‘Laurie’ (also a girl!)
Other names include:
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] ‘Tim’
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] ‘Isa’
[name_f]Monica[/name_f]
[name_f]Lois[/name_f]
[name_f]Unity[/name_f]
[name_f]Barbara[/name_f] ‘Barbie’
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u] ‘Val’
[name_f]Berenice[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ‘Meg’
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_u]Marie[/name_u]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] ‘Sally’
Pamona
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
Any favourites? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think any of the more dated ones (Sally, [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], etc) might be due a comeback? I’d be intruiged to hear your thoughts!
Inspired by @Harvest-Endellion’s lovely thread of [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables names to resurrect
What a sib set! It’s a nice blend of modern and vintage vibes!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the nn [name_u]Isa[/name_u], though I’ve never thought about it with full name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea though!
I can definitely see [name_f]Lois[/name_f], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] / [name_f]Sally[/name_f] making a comeback, and I’ve been waiting for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (and her many, many nicknames) to come back for a while!
I love so many of these names!
[name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy is wonderful.
I love [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] and now my young friend (my best friend’s daughter) wants to have a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]!
[name_f]Lois[/name_f] is delicious too. [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is cheery. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] and [name_u]Marie[/name_u] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u].
I think all should come back. People always say these names are dated but they are so rarely used that I find them fresh, even some I don’t like as well like [name_f]Elaine[/name_f].
Never hear of Pamona?
Great names. I have always had a soft spot for [name_f]Sally[/name_f].
I love [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] “Sally”, [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. I also really like “Tim” as a nickname for [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]. [name_u]Nicola[/name_u], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], [name_f]Monica[/name_f], and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Meg” are also standing out to me. I think some of the names like [name_f]Sally[/name_f] are definitely ready for a comeback but some others like [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] need another decade or so.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (on a girl!)
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u] (on a girl - v cool)
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] ‘Tim’ - kinda fun
[name_f]Lois[/name_f] - love it
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
Pamona
I could see the following coming back:
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Monica[/name_f] (Nica, [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_u]Mo[/name_u], Micky)
[name_f]Sally[/name_f] (Polly has come back?)
LOVE [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] “Laurie”!!! Has a similar sound to [name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is one of my favourite names, but I think it is more a classic than 40 names. And it also feels very 18-19 century to me.
[name_f]Berenice[/name_f] feels more like Byzantine for me.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] and [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] are my favourites! I especially love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] on a girl.
I think that [name_f]Lois[/name_f] is starting to make a bit of a comeback, I’ve met a few young Lois’ recently. I’d love to see [name_u]Jean[/name_u] making a comeback
