I”m due with our first in 6 weeks, and we will be surprised boy or girl. Like most on this site, we are looking for a more unusual last name (not in the top 200 seems pretty good for me) yet not too ”hipster” or whatever either.
Here is some background to help as you look at some of the names I like.
- Our last name rhymes with ”[name]Speck[/name]” ” starts with an S-consonant blend and ends with a hard ”k” sound, so I think it is a tough last name to flow with. One syllable.
- For middle names, I love [name]Thomas[/name] for a boy and [name]Lillian[/name] for a girl, despite their popularity, because they will honor family. I don”t care that much about first name-middle name-last name flow, but I want to avoid embarrassing initials.
- Our ethnic heritage: some Norwegian, Czech, [name]German[/name], etc.
- Although I like less common names, I would like a name that if you hear it, you know how to write it, and if you see it written, you know how to say it.
GIRLS
[name]Piper[/name] (popular and rising fast, but I love the sound with our last name, and my husband is a pilot so he loves the aviation connection)
[name]Adele[/name] (love it ” just hope the ”[name]Ad[/name]” names don”t take over the world)
[name]Adair[/name] (similar to [name]Adele[/name], not quite as cute, still the ”[name]Ad[/name]” issue)
[name]Inga[/name] (like a lot)
[name]Wren[/name] (so cute, but a bit weird with our last name)
[name]Bronwen[/name] (but B.S. are not initials I want my child to have)
[name]Isa[/name]
[name]Frida[/name]
[name]Renata[/name]
[name]Rowena[/name]/[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Topanga[/name] (if you can get past ”Boy Meets World.”)
[name]Ophelia[/name] (a bit negative on the literary connotations, plus the hemophilia thing ”)
[name]Willow[/name]
[name]Winona[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name] (I speak Spanish and love this, but feel it doesn”t sound as pretty in English)
[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Ina[/name]
[name]Portia[/name]
[name]Willa[/name] (like the strong Midwestern woman image of [name]Willa[/name] Cather, plus honors my family)
BOYS
[name]Asher[/name] (was my top pick for like 5 years, but I see it at the top of every ”up and coming” popularity list. My dad would also hate how Jewish it is, but the Biblical connection is fine with me.)
[name]Quentin[/name]
[name]Fisher[/name] (don”t love the nn ”[name]Fish[/name]”)
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Forest[/name]/[name]Forrest[/name]
[name]Baxter[/name] (except for the B.S. initials)
[name]Ranger[/name] (my husband says this is related to [name]Roger[/name], a family name. Also, he comes from a farming/ranching family. I”m not too sure about it.)
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Leif[/name] (but confusing on how it would be pronounced)
[name]Kazimir[/name] (supposedly Czech)
[name]Finn[/name] (rising in popularity – I know several)
[name]Luc[/name] (but [name]Lucas[/name]/[name]Luke[/name] is so common)
Grayer
[name]Archer[/name] (not crazy about nn [name]Archie[/name])
[name]Felix[/name] (doesn”t sound good with our last name)
[name]Tod[/name]
[name]Sylvan[/name]
Those are my ideas ” let me know which ones you like and/or hate, and I”d appreciate some new ideas to fall in love with!

We call him [name]Ace[/name]. [name]Archer[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Speck[/name] is fab!
