A Berry quiz!

I’m curious about my fellow Berries and their interests in naming and these forums, so I came up with some questions. You don’t have to answer all of them if you’d like to skip any!

A. How you got here

1. What first drew you to the whole topic of names?

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

(If intermittently, what years?)

(Do you sneak on when you have a free minute, keep it on in the background whenever you’re online, or have a set time that you log in?)

B. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on Nameberry’s top 20 user-favourite names, and how many thumbs down?

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

(Where do you typically discover names?)
(Has your naming style become more broad? More bold? More unique to you? etc.)

C. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

2. How long is your long list?

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have an idea what you would name a child right now?

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

F. Other hobbies and interests

1. Are you interested surnames too?

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting? (Some that often go hand-in-hand or are enjoyable in similar ways are writing, playing the [name_m]Sims[/name_m], Pinterest/aesthetic collections, style, decor…)

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

A. How you got here

1. What first drew you to the whole topic of names?

I remember being interested in what my own name meant as quite a small child, and what I would have changed it to if I had to, and I’ve been looking up meanings on BtN since forever.

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

Literally a couple of months  on the forums that is. I’ve been scouting the name lists for longer.

3. What times do you come on NB?

When I have a free minute. I work from home so it’s a good way to take a little break every so often :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

B. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on Nameberry’s top 20 user-favourite names, and how many thumbs down?

12 for girls, 8 for boys

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

I see new names I like all the time but in terms of actually listing them for potential kid names, probably only a couple so far… off the top of my head I can think of [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] and [name_u]Leander[/name_u] which were new to me

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

I would say my taste in names has definitely been validated by nameberry when before I was worried about being too ‘out there’ :smirk: and conversely I’ve also discovered how much joy some people get out of names I think of as ‘boring’ and that makes me like those names more! Also, I’ve realised how British I am hahaha

C. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

Really not often…but that’s probably because I have an awkward surname. If I had more flexibility I dread to think how indecisive I’d be

2. How long is your long list?

I mean there’s my ridiculous listography but my ‘would actually use’ list is about 20 names tops.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have an idea what you would name a child right now?

Yep :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

D. Forum posting

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

I don’t really look at the pets or parent ones, and sometimes play the games, but other than that I look at them all.

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

I like the various bandwagon threads which crop up, it’s so fun seeing different people’s styles! And suggesting pairings for people’s names :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I also love the girls + boys with two middle names game

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you watch any threads or check in on them regularly? Why do you like them in particular?

I check names and GP of the day threads most days, it’s a fun way to get inspiration. I really like the quick poll thread too!

E. Forum feelings

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

Everybody is so kind, so unusual for the internet!

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

Not really applicable since I’m pretty new

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

Can’t think of anything…

F. Other hobbies and interests

1. Are you interested surnames too?

Yes definitely!

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

Yep!

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting?

I use Pinterest and love home interiors and aesthetics in general :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

On my phone (real lists for kids) and listography (aesthetic lists for fun)

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

I just list the names, but I remember the meanings and origins. [name_f]My[/name_f] ‘real’ lists are sorted by favourites but my aesthetic lists are just whatever comes to mind!

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

A. How you got here

1. What first drew you to this site, or the whole topic of names?

I’m not sure how it happened, but when I was a kid I borrowed an old name book from the library and got really into it. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum bought it for me when the library sold it as it was quite out of date, and I still treasure it. The fascination never left me.

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

I joined in ’13 and started making lists on the main site and commenting on blog posts. Then in ’18 I started posting in the forums and got quite into the forums for a period of each year since.

3. What times do you come on NB?

Lately I sneak a look if I can any time throughout the day, or at night after the kids are in bed.

B. Forum posting

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

Mostly [name_m]General[/name_m] Name Discussion and [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games, which is probably my favourite just because I get so many ideas there and absolutely love to puzzle out naming challenges.

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

I love reading threads with a lot of different names and naming styles posted after each other, especially that can be compare/contrasted like in like/love/lose or changing-name-list games. I love to post in challenges like Picky Parents, or to come up with name lists based on a prompt.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you watch any threads or check in on them regularly? Why do you like them in particular?

I closely follow my very favourite games to see all new posts, especially the ones that tend to have slower activity (like the themed elimination games).

C. Forum feelings

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

I love that they’re so active for a pretty niche interest, and the quality of threads/responses seems really high as forums go.

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

I feel like the most popular games in [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games have shifted, not entirely in line with my personal preferences, but on the whole things don’t feel like they’ve changed much — maybe I wasn’t around enough in the past to notice though.

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

I feel like user lists could be more elegant, easier to find and especially to share — they could complement the forums well. Besides that, the little preview of the UC is so short that it’s hard to get to read anything at all; I’d like if it could display as much as signatures used to, at least, without having to click onto the full profile.

D. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on the NB top 20, and how many thumbs down?\

I’m not very berry. Of the top 10 Nameberry boys and 10 Nameberry girls, I love 4/20, like 3, feel meh about 3, dislike 4 and hate 5/20. Some of the ones loved most (Maeve, Atticus) I hate the most. While some of my very favourite names are completely unheard of both on Nameberry and in birth charts.

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

Rarely I discover something I hadn’t come across before, but I absolutely love it when I do. And often I’m reminded of brilliant names I’d forgotten about or not really noticed.

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

I’ve lost my distaste for some things, like surname names, if done well. I really appreciate some of the more idiosyncratic naming styles out there. [name_f]My[/name_f] own style has got a bit more adventurous/indulgent, so it’s now a mix of formerly popular/dated names, inventive ideas and a few rare vintage choices.

E. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

When I deep dive into this little obsession, I tend to find lots of new things I’m excited about and my top 20 or so names can change a lot. But the top 10 are fairly steady.

2. How long is your long list?

On my UC I keep 75 boy, 75 girl and 35 unisex top favourites, but my saved lists are about 450 favourite names, plus dozens of lists of dozens of other names each (less usable, usually from other countries etc.).

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what you would name a child right now?

I have some ideas but I’d definitely need to think about it. I have two kids and I want to look for patterns in all the names in our family (there seem to be a couple) to find some way to connect another child to the rest of us.

F. Related hobbies

1. Are you interested surnames too?

I love hearing interesting surnames and I save a few. I think fitting a name in with a surname stylistically is a fun and worthwhile challenge.

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

I have some word lists on Wordnik and in my database app; I love playing with language and I love the aesthetics of different words and combinations. I would also love to learn [name_m]German[/name_m] or Latin, and also Australian Sign Language. The way signers develop sign nicknames is really interesting to me.

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting?

I love planning creative projects and worldbuilding, even if I never use what I put together. I also like saving ‘aesthetics’/picture collections on We [name_f]Heart[/name_f] It and making lists of all kinds, especially things that can be explored and collected and categorised (music, films, literature, etc.). And I love make-a-rule/find-the-rule puzzle games like Zendo.

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

I use Memento Database on my phone, where I have lots of linked libraries for names, sets and combos, as well as words, favourite films and my to-watch list, colours and palettes, project ideas, and all kinds of stuff. It’s an amazingly simple but powerful app, and so much better than keeping things just in spreadsheets, which it can generate, along with graphs and all sorts.

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

I always write down etymology, related names/variations, associated names, and a score and tags to make it sortable/searchable. I don’t tend to record pronunciation because if a pronunciation isn’t self-evident or memorable, I won’t really like the name anyway.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

I love Behindthename and its advanced search features, historical international popularity charts and submitted names; Forebears for international name distribution; Name-Doctor for cross-checking etymology and usage; some list organisers, randomisers and alphabetisers; Generatorland for making generators out of lists; Listmoz for manually ranking lists; and for fun I like using a tournament generator app to compare and rank names and other things.

H. Finally, for fun

What name is on your mind right now?

I’ve had Sefton stuck in my head for days now. I think it’s a new favourite.

A1. I got bored of using the same names all the times for my [name_m]Sims[/name_m] so I started looking up different names. But I think what really got me interested in names was the fact that 1 name could have 3+ meanings/origins.

A2. I’ve been here 2 years. Although, I’ve disappeared for a few weeks or months during the last year.

A3. I always have NB open as a tab on my phone. I sneak on it when I can while at work (like now ). On my laptop, it’s usually open as a tab and I split screen NB and whatever I’m watching.

B1. Thunbs up for 13 boys & 14 girls.

B2. Rarely. I’ve probably “stolen” less than 10.

B3. NB has got me considering more “out-there” names. There are a few names where I probably thought “that’s not a name” when I first joined, but now think they’re a perfectly normal name! (e.g. Winter)

C1. Once a year? I’ve had 2 “Top 10” lists in the 2 years I’ve been here.

C2. I have 11 combos for girls and 11 for boys, and then a few odd names. [name_f]My[/name_f] list of firsts is likely less than 20 for each, currently.

C3. Yes, I’m pretty much set on it but that will probably not be the reality (partner will want a say)

D1. Almost exclusively [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games. Sometimes I venture into other threads.

D2. I like to read the Birth Announcements and NB Memes threads. And I guess I like to post in the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games thread.

D3. Some of the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games threads - [name_f]Heaven[/name_f], Purgatory, Hell; Name Elimination.

E1. Everyone is friendly and non-judgemental :slightly_smiling_face:

E2. I think it’s mostly stayed the same.

E3. Bring back Namehunter!

F1. Not really. Only ones that can be used as first names.

F2. I have started developing an interest in etymology.

F3. Playing [name_m]God[/name_m] - The [name_m]Sims[/name_m] and Village Life (rip)

G1. Locked note on my phone.

G2. For names I would like to use in future, I just collect the meaning(s). I sort them by gender preference, alphabetically. I also have separate lists for firsts and middles.

G3. Behind The Name

H. [name_u]Winter[/name_u], since I mentioned it above

A. How you got here

1. What first drew you to the whole topic of names?

I’ve been into names since I was a kid - not really even sure why, but I loved to collect them and to name things. I think I enjoyed the sounds and the meanings and the way names create an identity. I really got into names when my aunt was choosing names for my little cousin and my nan got out an old name book!

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

I made my account in [name_u]November[/name_u] 2016 apparently, but I don’t believe I started using it properly until [name_u]August[/name_u] 2017, so five years

3. What times do you come on NB?

Generally, I go on NB in the morning around 7am or 6am if I’m at work that day - then again at 4pm. Sometimes more - just whenever I feel

B. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on Nameberry’s top 20 user-favourite names, and how many thumbs down?

10 thumbs up for girls, 14 for boys

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

Fairly often in my early days, but now I feel like I’ve seen a lot of the names - still, every few weeks, one absolutely grabs me

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

I think NB has definitely helped me embrace my love of more unique names, but equally, to like what I like, instead of trying to appeal to what I think others might like?
Some of my faves that I discovered on NB include: [name_f]Mabli[/name_f], [name_f]Cherith[/name_f], [name_f]Taisie[/name_f], [name_f]Tansy[/name_f], [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f], [name_u]Endellion[/name_u], [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], Wyeth, [name_f]Tesni[/name_f]

C. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

[name_f]My[/name_f] six favourites - not often. As for my top ten/s, the other places change fairly often - probably most times I’m asked

2. How long is your long list?

Ridiculously long

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have an idea what you would name a child right now?

Left to my own devices, yes - [name_f]Sarai[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] or [name_m]Sholto[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]

D. Forum posting

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

The Lounge, Name Advice, [name_m]General[/name_m] Name Discussion, Girls, Boys and Gender Neutral

I like all of them - maybe Name discussion is my fave?

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

I like threads where you get to play about with people’s lists - whether that’s recommending similar names or making combos or suggesting middles  I like a challenge too - combining parent’s styles, coming up with honours etc.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you watch any threads or check in on them regularly? Why do you like them in particular?

Lounge Name Sightings is one I check in with - love seeing the names people have encountered

E. Forum feelings

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

The fact you can just ask about names without having to pretend to be pregnant or even want kids  plus, I enjoy reading people’s opinions, stories and experiences

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

I was here before the big update and I do like the set up better now. A few other changes I’ve noticed are more younger Berries and simultaneously harsher opinions and more enthusiasm at the same time?

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

Hmm, not sure (sorry)

F. Other hobbies and interests

1. Are you interested surnames too?

Not really, tbh - unless they’re used as first names :woman_shrugging:

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

Words, yes, as a former lit student

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting?

Writing and character creation!!

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

Listography, random scraps of paper, random notepads

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

I read the information - like popularity, meaning etc - but I don’t really store that anywhere, except in my head. Which means I often forget it

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

behindthename, usually

H. Finally, for fun

1a) when I was 10 years old, I read a book about a girl who, among other things, wanted to be a writer. she had a name book that she used to help name her characters and I thought that sounded like a really good idea so I asked for a name book for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u].

2a) I joined in [name_u]August[/name_u] 2013 (when I was 14, about to start high school) but I don’t think I really started posting consistently until early 2014.

3a) I just always stay logged in!

1b) I see the nameberry style as being a spectrum of vintage/cottagecore names and adventurous/eclectic names, and while I think I fall on the further end of the latter, I would still consider many of my names to be pretty “berry-esque”. I’m not a big fan of vintage or cottagecore names though, so I have that going against me.

2b) I would never steal a combo but I probably come across a handful of new names from berries every month or so.

3b) oh absolutely. I came on nameberry as a young teen with a very trendy style (Adalyn, [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], & [name_f]Brynlee[/name_f] were my top girls; [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], [name_m]Torin[/name_m], & [name_u]Ryder[/name_u] were my top boys).
especially in early 2014, these names were not well-received, and my style evolved to be decidedly vintage by 2016 (Lila, [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], & Maeve; [name_u]Leo[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Nolan[/name_u], & Jasper).
Then I realized that I actually don’t much care for vintage boy names, and then I realized that I quite like a lot of unisex names for girls. [name_u]Parker[/name_u] became a very important girl name for me, and that made me feel more comfortable finding other names in that style.
my style has never felt more me than it does currently, and even now it’s still evolving.

1c) I don’t think I could settle on a solid top 10 rn, if that answers the question lol

2c) I have lists called “Every [boy/girl] name I like” which only excludes names already used by family or used for OCs, that has about 450 boy names and 800 girl names. many of these are GPs

3c) a girl would be [name_u]Fable[/name_u] or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], a boy would be [name_u]Cove[/name_u] or Ezryn

1d) all the main ones, plus the writer’s corner. my favorite is the general name discussion

2d) I love reading about users’ top combos, and seeing the unique ways they come up with them

3d) I watch any of the Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] threads because they’re easy to respond to.

1e) the sense of community!

2e) absolutely. all in all, I believe it’s become much more welcoming and open to different styles of names. the berry style that we see and talk about today is at least 3x more diverse than the berry style that existed when I first joined the forums

3e) namehunter!!!

1f) not really, although I wouldn’t be against the idea of creating a new surname with my spouse when the time comes so I could see myself getting into them then

2f) yes, but more in a usage way than a research way because I’m a writer

3f) writing, of course!

1g) mostly on my notes app. I have a listography but I rarely update it.

2g) I have data kicks sometime where I create spreadsheets of my favorite names and list them alongside their origin, meaning, and popularity statistics, but like my listography, I rarely update these

3g) mostly just Behind the Name

What first drew you to the whole topic of names?
Probably my desire to name all my toys when I was younger.

How long have you been here and how long have you been active?
I joined in 2020, a few months after first starting to read the blog posts (and the comments underneath, since I never commented) and have been active since.

What time do you come on NB?
When I’m back home after the day and have finished all my work.

How ‘Berry’ are you?
Going off the top names on Nameberry list I like 12/20 for boys and 10/20 for girls, however overall I think I tend to like many names that are popular here.

How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?
Not that often, every now and then I spot a great combo or a name I haven’t heard of/forgotten about and put it in my notes, but I wouldn’t call that ‘stealing’.

Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices and style?
It has in such a way that I am much more aware of the diversity and quantity of names out there. I’ve also discovered some favourites thanks to NB.

How often does your top 10/all time favourites change?
Not too often. The preference order of my favourite usable names changes sometimes, but I haven’t fallen out of love with a name in a while, thankfully.

How long is your long list?
A couple hundred for girls, about half of that for boys.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have an idea what you would name a child right now?
Maybe? I have solid, usable favourites lined up but I feel like the process if naming an actual child would be so incredibly complex that it would be much more difficult for me than if I just settled on a name now. Plus, I don’t actually think I could narrow down my favourites well enough even now.

Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?
I enjoy [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games, especially CAFs. Seeing what expectant parents are considering for their irl baby in Name Advice is also interesting for me, but I guess I probably spend most time here in [name_m]General[/name_m] Name Discussion. Overall I like to pop into every subcategory though.

What are your favourite kind of threads to read/post in?
[name_f]Pretty[/name_f] much everything, although I do really enjoy Quizzes like this one (Both to read and post). I also usually like reading other user’s opinions on naming topics, although it depends on which topic exactly. Overall though I post in [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games a fair amount.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you watch any threads/check on them regularly?
I enjoy looking at Nameberry Memes most of the time, and also check in on the [name_f]Celebrity[/name_f] [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names list and Birth Announcements for interesting updates frequently.

What do you like most about the forums?
The diversity of viewpoints and (to some extent) cultures and the opportunity to aid parents to be in naming their little ones.

Have you seen this place change much over time?
I love seeing internal name trends evolve on here. I also think the general attitude has somewhat changed, although I can’t really describe how.

If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?
I really miss the Namehunter, and also find the main site difficult to navigate sometimes (Although it could just be a glitch)

Are you interested in surnames too?
Yes!

How about words/etymology/languages?
I love linguistics and learning languages, and etymology is so interesting to me.

Related interests
I love writing, calligraphy and photography as well as aesthetic boards.

Where do you keep name lists?
On my Listography and Notes app.

How much information do you collect about names?
I have a few lists with name meanings, but otherwise not much.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?
I use BehindTheName frequently for name meanings and international names, and British [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names for lists based on vibe/style (And birth announcements).

What name is on your mind right now?
[name_u]Alba[/name_u].

  1. I thought about what I would one day name my own children, and when I had a few combos put together I went on the internet to look what they mean.
  2. I’ve been here since 2017, daily active since 2020ish
  3. I’m pretty much always online, as both my work and free time are mostly on my PC and I never close tabs

B

  1. Not very Berry, mostly because I’m not American. I can’t seem to see my likes on the main site but spontaneously I like Atlas, Asher, Ezra, Alice, Hazel and Iris.
  2. For my list, not often. Most berry combos are just too wild for me. My “interesting finds” list gets a new name maybe once a month.
  3. Nameberry hasn’t influenced me that much because American naming culture doesn’t affect me, but it has indirectly, by making me more or less inclined to certain styles or names. For example, for the longest time I felt special because everyone likes August and for me it’s a family name, so using it would be a great honor opportunity, but then I realized I don’t actually like it.

C

  1. Except for throwing out/ downrating some name I’m less likely to use, my list hasn’t changed in years
  2. 5 names (for both, not each)
  3. I have 2-3 very solid ideas.

D

  1. Mostly the General Name Discussions, sometimes Games and Writers’ Corner (but they eat so much time)
  2. I like questionnaires  Generation games and Heaven-Hell-Purgatory, I like making my own quizzes too.
  3. I regularly check on Memes, Hot Takes and Rants, because that’s where the tea is :tea: :person_tipping_hand: and the ones that require me to get active oc

E

  1. I appreciate how shameless Nameberry is about daydreaming, aesthetics, make-believe and the like. Instead of “I like Howard. I could picture myself giving it to a son”, you get "Howard is the cuddliest boy name, it’s a little boy with messy auburn hair in rainboots collecting chestnuts. Today I just see myself with a little Howie :fallen_leaf: :teddy_bear: :moon_cake: " And in my opinion that’s something precious.
  2. Apart from the changing Berry favourites, it’s become a lot less judge-y. Obviously that’s good!
  3. I’ve always said a “jump to my own latest post on this thread” option would be useful. On the main site, maybe the option to see who liked a name?

F

  1. Not really
  2. A little? I like a good fun fact but that’s it
  3. Creative writing and Sims, so it comes down to character creation. (That reminds me. I need to make a post about some of my current Sims because the latest Generation just grew into their names so :ok_hand: well)

G

Nameberry has definitely influenced my naming choices. Oh yes! Definitely!

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

I can get advice for names without feeling weird asking it abt it like I do irl.

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

The only change I was here for was getting rid of the Everything But Names Category. I feel just fine, though I was sad to see the Teenberry Topic go away.

I wouldn’t change a thing.

  1. I don’t know, honestly. I’ve always been interested in names. I remember watching tv (especially the show A [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Story) and I’d write down names as I watched. I eventually bought baby name books but I didn’t start looking up names online until my late teens (for my [name_m]Sims[/name_m] lol)

  2. I joined in 2012 but lurked for maybe a few months before that? I did take a small break on or off over the last couple of years, after having my baby.

  3. [name_m]Ah[/name_m], there is no set time or circumstance. I guess I’m more active on here once my son goes to bed but I just browse a bit randomly. I used to be on here a LOT more.

B)

  1. I don’t do the thumbs up/down thing?

  2. I only stole a name for my list once. I don’t even remember who posted it but the combo was [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]. I admire a lot of combos on here, even if some aren’t my style. Berries are SO creative and even the more “simple” names can be so refreshing!

  3. NB is absolutely fantastic for opening ones mind, especially for names. I used to like names that I heard around my small town but NB showed me just how small my world really was lol. People on here can be very opinionated but you’ll find complete strangers supporting your love for [name_u]Fox[/name_u] or [name_f]Plum[/name_f] or [name_f]Athena[/name_f] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I love it :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: it helped my tastes change but then they kind of grew outside of the site, too.

C)

  1. Not really often, actually! Kind of stumped on names lately.

  2. I’m not sure.

  3. For a girl, I think it would be down to two options. For a boy, no clue.

D)

  1. ParentBerries and Name Discussions. I only rarely go anywhere else.

  2. Eh…I like parenting ones and ones where a person wants opinions on their existing list. [name_f]My[/name_f] brain feels like mush these days, so I just don’t at all have it in me to come up with suggestions.

  3. Hmmm….there are a few. Aside from my TTC thread, I keep up on [name_f]Celebrity[/name_f] [name_u]Baby[/name_u] News (idk why. I feel like I can contribute something to this site if I can find out news), Hot Takes (I really should stay off of that one), etc.

E)

  1. I liked the community and having a place to talk about an interest that others don’t really understand. This site has helped me through some of the hardest times of my life. It was always there.

  2. It has changed soooo much, imo. When I came back from my hiatus, I noticed an immediate change. The tone had completely changed. There used to be ups and downs, like anyone/thing has, but even in our differences we felt united. Now things often seem more…volatile? Hostile? I don’t care to comment much these days because it feels like walking on eggshells.

  3. I want the Everything But Names category back. Some of the threads were silly, some where very thoughtful and articulate, some were supportive…but they helped us come together in a way. There are some Berries that I had gotten a certain impression of based on comments about names/culture but completely changed my mind when I saw another side of them on an Everything thread. Plus…you know…we came here for the names but friendships grew beyond that. I wish there was a way to keep that aspect of the site.

F)

  1. Not really.
  2. In a lazy way! I love finding stuff like that out but prefer to find it out more organically rather than seek it out haha
  3. I don’t really have the time or energy for much else these days.

G)

  1. On my phone
  2. I write it down and brainstorm some middle names for it. If I come back to the name, I will look up meanings, etc.
  3. Not really

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

Less than a year, but Ive been an outside viewer since there were signatures.

3. What times do you come on NB?

Just whenever.

B. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on Nameberry’s top 20 user-favourite names, and how many thumbs down?

Fairly — a similar taste what was drove me to become a member. From the popular boys list, I would add four to my list. From the girls, seven. Interesting, as I usually prefer boys names. Maybe my boys list is less berry!

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

For middle names, fairly often. Less so for firsts.

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

Not particularly! I’ve grown more fond of the classic/out there combo that seems to be nameberries good standard.

C. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

Rarely!

2. How long is your long list?

Too long for middles. Short for firsts.

3. Do you have an idea what you would name a child right now?

A girl would definitely be Opal Avonlea, but boys I have a whole list.

D. Forum posting

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

General Name Discussion is the one I visit most, yt my favorite is birth announcements.

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

Birth announcements! My favorite thread to post in is pretty randomized.

3. Do you watch any threads or check in on them regularly? Why do you like them in particular?

No.

E. Forum feelings

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

The topic, popularity, and formatting.

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

Yes! I miss signatures, but otherwise I am not picky.

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

N/A.

F. Other hobbies and interests

1. Are you interested surnames too?

Not especially.

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

Sometimes.

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting? (Some that often go hand-in-hand or are enjoyable in similar ways are writing, playing the Sims, Pinterest/aesthetic collections, style, decor…)

I like decor, architecture, and collecting in a sense. I’m a photographer.

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

Listography or the notes app.

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

Alphabetically, separated by if I prefer them as firsts and middles. I don’t collect a ton - I vaguely know the origin and the meaning but if I forget I don’t care either.

3. Do you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

No. There is a discord group.

A1) I believe I started liking names when I actually got serious about looking for names for my characters
A2) I think I joined in 2020? I’ll have to look at my old account and see
A3) I always keep it up in a tab on my laptop, but I’m not always actively on the site

B1) I’m not opposed to most berry names, but they’re not my absolute favorites save for a few
B2) Not very often, actually. I’ve only ‘stole’ a few names in my time here (I think I’ve been the one that people steal from lol (I remember Elma becoming popular after I put it as my notd, Hugo rising a while ago when I put it in a few games, and lots of people liking Lilika and asking if they could steal her)
B3) I’ve definitely broadened my taste since coming here. My brother turns up his nose at some of the names I like lol

C1) It’s remained relatively the same throughout the years. Margaret and Nathaniel have always been at the top, and I’ve always liked my others, even if they weren’t in my top 5 names
C2) How are we defining longlist  I probably have over 1000 saved names on here, and a list of at least 30 for names I would actually use vs. just like
C3) If it’s a girl, Margaret nn Greta (or maybe Maggie or Madge), if it’s a boy, Nathaniel nn Nat, if I want to go the gender neutral route, I’d probably use Liberty nn Libby or Berty/Bert

D1) I like playing games and doing CAFs the best, and I also like the various notd threads

E3) I REALLY WANNA HAVE A TEENBERRIES SECTION, THE PARENTBERRIES GET ONE, WHY CAN’T WE :sob:

F3) I write a lot, and I also love making moodboards

G1) I just save names on NB. Sometimes I’ll make lists on Google Docs, but I like having everything in the same place and NB is the easiest

Since June 2018

3. What times do you come on NB?

Whenever I have some free time.

B.

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on Nameberry’s top 20 user-favourite names, and how many thumbs down?

I think most of the Berry favorites are alright, but not really my style. Not sure what the thumbs up/down thing even is

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

Sometimes. I “stole” our Endymion’s name from the NB forums, but I’m pretty sure someone suggested it to me after I asked for ideas.

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

I think it has influenced how I feel about names. I like more unisex names/consider more names unisex, for example. There are a lot of names I like because of NB, but my clear favorites and the one I’d use or have used for my actual children are still my Icelandic names and very out there names, which aren’t popular on NB at all.
I discover a lot of new names on BtN and through my husband, who’s a fellow name nerd.

C.

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

Not very often, but my top 10 for girls has changed drastically since naming a daughter

2. How long is your long list?

My master list is about 500 names, but that’s without my Icelandic list, which is separate

3. Do you have an idea what you would name a child right now?

For a girl yes, obviously, since we’re expecting a daughter next month. Her first name will be Vienna. For a boy I’d go with Sindri Christopher or Astrophel Johannes

D.

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

Most regularly: general name discussion, parentberries

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

I love the quick poll thread, polls are fun

Quick poll thread, mostly. Hot takes, NOTD and Name Rants are favorites as well

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

Can’t think of anything right now

F.

1. Are you interested surnames too?

Yeah, I think they’re interesting

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

Love them. I speak 7 languages and want to learn a couple more.

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting? (Some that often go hand-in-hand or are enjoyable in similar ways are writing, playing the Sims, Pinterest/aesthetic collections, style, decor…)

Mostly just reading and music

G.

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

On BtN and in my old fashioned notebook. I also started a listography, but it’s not really my thing so far

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

I sort them per language or origin, and gender. For my Icelandic names I usually add the meaning

3. Do you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

Behind the Name, sometimes Kveller for Jewish names

  1. I’ve always loved my name because my bio dad chose it for me, and he died when I was a baby, so it makes me feel connected to him. I was also named after my mom (her FN is my MN). And naturally, I wanted to help name my younger siblings. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom humored me and let me make several lists, but thankfully, she didn’t use anything I came up with. (I was 9; my name suggestions were horrible  Wait… I just remembered that I tried to help my older sister name her firstborn son… I was obsessed with [name_u]Twilight[/name_u], so of course I suggested [name_u]Edward[/name_u] and Jacob… :grimacing: But you know what, I’m pretty sure I mentioned [name_u]Seth[/name_u], and that’s what she named him, so… :stuck_out_tongue:)

  2. It was shortly after I discovered that baby name books existed. I was browsing the bookshelf in my 6th grade [name_f]English[/name_f] class, and there it was, a book containing 35,000+ names or something like that, and I was OVER THE MOON excited. I was also a huge fan of Yahoo! Answers at the time (god, my embarrassment just keeps growing) and there was a trend of playing [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games. Eventually, they got banned or something? So I came to Nameberry. And even though I stopped “playing” for a while during high school or college, I eventually came back as an adult. And I can’t get enough. (Plus, I’m a writer, so I’m constantly looking for character names.)

  3. I sneak on during work sometimes  and just whenever I want a form of entertainment that isn’t books, TikTok, or TV.

-B-

  1. I’ve hearted half of the popular names for both boys and girls.

  2. I don’t ‘steal’ so much as heart them, use them in baby name games, and get really excited when I see them in real life.

  3. Oh heck yes. [name_f]My[/name_f] naming style has changed many times over the years, and I definitely think this website has helped with that. (Ex: I never used to like [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], but now I think it’s lovely; I wouldn’t use it for a child (maybe for a character) but I would be thrilled for anyone who did.)

-C-

  1. [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] often. It’s kind of hard to figure out what my top 10 are, really. Because the top 10 names that I currently ADORE are very different from the top 10 names I would actually use for myself, or could convince my partner into using. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

  2. Which one? :smirk:

  3. For girls, I have a few combos that I’m pretty set on and several more that I’m considering. For boys… I have one first name that I’m dying to use… and a couple more that I love, but I’m not set on middles.

-D-

  1. [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games is where I live. I also peruse the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Announcements every few months because they make my heart warm and my eyes all misty. And I read any articles that catch my eye, especially How I Named [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_u]Baby[/name_u].

  2. Again, just whatever catches my eye.

  3. Name Sightings!!!

  1. I like interacting with people who love names as much as me. And I adore seeing my favorite names used in beautiful ways, or discovering new ones.

  2. I’ve been here a while, so… yes. The first time it changed, I was sad because I didn’t know how to navigate it, but I’ve seen it change in a couple more ways since then, and I just learn to adapt.

  3. I’d like to be able to edit posts without getting rid of the name links, or to copy & paste other people’s posts without changing the color of the name links (normally, they’re blue for boys, pink for girls, and green for gender neutral, but if you copy and paste it, it changes all names to a different blue). That’s just my AuDHD wanting things to work the way they’re supposed to, and to be all pretty and color-coordinated.

-F-

  1. Yes! Especially as a writer. (I really should look at the Writer’s Forums more; I don’t know why I don’t.)

  2. YES!!!

  3. [name_m]Reading[/name_m], writing (original work and fanfiction), Pinterest, story-centric and artistic video games, and any game where I can name/create characters or stories of some kind (I like the concept of [name_m]Sims[/name_m], but not the game layout, so I use mobile games like Choices or the sadly-discontinued computer games [name_f]Pixie[/name_f] Hollow and Millsberry).

-G-

  1. On my phone and Google Docs, and sometimes on scrap pieces of paper or my journal, if I’m craving the sensation of writing names down; I don’t know why it’s different, it just is.

  2. I research the heck out of most names. It’s more out of curiosity than anything else, but I love finding more reasons to love my favorite names. And if I discover something new, I want to know ALL about it.

  3. I’ve used [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name DNA a couple of times.

A. How you got here

1. What first drew you to this site, or the whole topic of names?

I found this site when I was probably 11 (I’m now 20)! I used the “Similar Names” feature all the time to name the characters in the stories I’d write.

2. How long have you been here and how long have you been active?

I made an account in 2016 so that I could save my potential character names to lists! I’ve not been active the whole time, no. I only joined the forums within that last 2 years or so.

3. What times do you come on NB?

Anytime! I don’t have any social media accounts (that I use or have the apps for downloaded lol), so NB is a cool, social-media-but-much-better esque place for me. Right now it’s 8AM for me, and I’m eating breakfast before nanny work all day.

B. Forum posting

1. Which subforums do you browse, and which is your favourite?

I browse all of them! I think [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Games, [name_m]General[/name_m] Name Discussion, and Birth Announcements are my tippy top faves.

2. What are your favourite kind of threads to read? What are your favourite threads to post in, if that’s different?

I love reading all the ones I mentioned above, and I love posting in all of them too. I have yet to have children of my own, but I’ve gotten to make three posts this past year for nanny/family births dear to me, which has been so so special. Shoutout to my babies of 2022: [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_u]Julian[/name_u], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you watch any threads or check in on them regularly? Why do you like them in particular?

Nope, I don’t. I just click “Latest” and see what I can reply to! I do check on the Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] Thread without any intention of posting in it sometimes. It’s a quick, cool way to learn about new names and share in people’s love for their favorites, new and old!

C. Forum feelings

1. What do you like most about the forums here?

I love the community, the friends I’ve made, and the space to be a nerd about names! It’s so so fun and absolutely feels like a community of insight and care.

2. Have you seen this place change much over time? How do you feel about it?

I haven’t really. I haven’t been here toooo long.

3. If you could see one feature implemented or tweaked on the forums or the main site, what would it be?

Hm… I’d like to be able to change out usernames more easily, I suppose.

D. Nameberry influence

1. How ‘berry’ are you? How many thumbs up on the NB top 20, and how many thumbs down?

I have 10 thumbs up for girls and 12 for boys. (One awesome thing I’ve gained since becoming a frequent forums poster is appreciation for so many boy names!)

2. How often do you encounter and steal a great name from the forums?

I add so so many names to my long list from the forums. Maybe once every two or three weeks on average? Except for “wild word” names. I add those all the time. Berries have the coolest word name ideas.

3. Has Nameberry influenced your naming choices or style? Have you made major discoveries here? Have you come to see some names differently?

Yes! I’ve learned to branch out while still staying true to my heart and style. I’ve also learned that honor names can be indirect but still super meaningful—which I adore.

E. Listmaking

1. How often does your top 10/all time faves list change?

It’s usually the same handful… it’s never completely changed! I love a stodgy, classic, Biblical name (or Biblical word name). They just always do it for me!

2. How long is your long list?

About 100 names per sex! But not all of them are name did really use for kids. Most are just names I love.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what you would name a child right now?

I’d probably name my daughter [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (middle names some combo of [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], or May) and my son [name_u]George[/name_u] (middles some combo of [name_u]Edward[/name_u], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], .

F. Related hobbies

1. Are you interested surnames too?

Absolutely! I have a surname that’s commonly mistaken for a Welsh one but is actually Irish. I love cool surnames.

2. How about words/etymology/languages?

Yes to all of that. I’m a linguistics major at university. A namenerd’s unshocking discovery of love.

3. Other related/similar interests, e.g. creative expression or collecting?

I’m a writer and generally very creative, hyper focused person.

G. Related tools and habits

1. Where do you keep name lists, if you keep them?

Listography! I loooove Listography.

2. How much information do you collect about names, if you do? How do you sort them?

I don’t collect much, but I’d really like to start collecting origins and meanings. They’re so interesting—and often add so much to a name.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you use or browse any other blogs/sites/apps/tools in relation to Nameberry?

None at all!

H. Finally, for fun

What name is on your mind right now?

[name_u]Vision[/name_u] [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] as a combo for a little girl. It’s constantly, always, and forever on my mind lately. I love both names so much… but I feel like they aren’t usable! [name_m]Ah[/name_m] well, I adore them so!
