I was actually thinking about putting it on my list as a middle name, but it got me wondering about it as a first. I know it’s popular for girls, but it’s a nature name so I feel like it should be fair game for either gender.
Totally hypothetical, of course - I’m not expecting any time soon :D. But what would you think? Yay or nay?
And for the record, if anyone would be so kind as to offer up opinions on this as well, I was considering using it as a middle for [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
Yes, it theoretically could be used as a boys’ name - there’s no law that states what gender it should be assigned to - but I don’t think it necessarily should. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], perhaps because it shares the au- prefix of [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and [name_u]Auden[/name_u], and the soft-sounding “umm” as a suffix, sounds very effeminate. I personally think [name_u]August[/name_u], an established boys’ name, sounds feminine. When names like [name_u]Winter[/name_u], which has always sounded very masculine to me, are being used frequently by girls, I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] will likely be teased.
Though as a middle name it’s significantly less of a no-no, it’s still not my favorite. [name_u]August[/name_u] would be a better choice. I don’t think it flows well with [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] either (though I adore the name [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]!).
I vastly prefer [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] on a boy. (Also, when reading the responses to your thread, bear in mind that Nameberry is disgustingly misogynistic and regressive when it comes to gender. In the eyes of [name_f]Pam[/name_f] and [name_f]Linda[/name_f], the second a name, ANY name, is given to a girl, ANY girl, it immediately becomes female and is forever after unusable for any and all boys. Unfortunately most Berries have absorbed this attitude.)
It definitely sounds more fresh on a boy. The teasing thing has more to do with the actual child than his or her name. While playing with my daughter on the playground I hear kids with perfectly normal names get called terrible nick names. Heck, I was “[name_m]Dan[/name_m] the man” as a kid ([name_f]Danielle[/name_f]) due to a particularly short haircut.
I like it as a middle. It’s been in the top 200 for girls since the late 70s- those thousands of girls named [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] are just going to make it logistically difficult for a male [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. There’s no reason [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] should be a girls name over a boys, but realistically, it’s not practical for a boy as a first name.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_u]Auden[/name_u]? It’s very similar sounding, and I don’t think you’ll encounter nearly as much confusion.
I can’t see why not. I especially like it in the middle. The right type of boy could wear it well in the fn spot, but it would be unfortunate on a boy who is less confident.
Quite some time back someone posted here that she had a nephew named [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] (first name). I’ve also heard it used from someone else too on a boy. I’ve actually heard of [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Summer[/name_f] all being used on boys before, but obviously not very common.
I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] on a boy, for a first or a middle! I love the warm, romantic, nature vibe. [name_u]August[/name_u] is popular for a boy, so why not [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]?
No, we have a friend named [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. People always think that he’s a girl when we talk about him. When I met him my first thought was I must have misheard, surely they said Auto.
Sorry, but I can’t picture it on a boy. I don’t agree with the “all nature names are unisex” sentiment. [name_u]Sage[/name_u] and [name_u]River[/name_u], sure, those can be used on either gender but names like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] all have a long history as girls names and I think it would be a bit cruel to bestow them on a boy.
