I got to thinking the other day about how obsessed so many of us are about “sibsets,” and recalled the advice that some espouse about them, which is that most of your children’s lives will be lived as grown-up individuals and not as part of a little “sibset,” so you should use the names you love the most, and not worry about if they “go together” perfectly.
Which reminded me of a girl’s name which I had given up partly for that very reason–Laureline. It’s not even on nameberry as an official name, so don’t bother looking it up. But it might just (currently) be my second favorite girl’s name. Should I use it for that reason, even if it isn’t the exact same style as my #1 name, and even if some would argue it’s not even a “real” name?
As I was musing over this and considering [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f] (and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Lari[/name_f]) instead, I thought about the fact that for years and years, I’ve actually had the “Laur” names on the boy’s side of the list, in the form of [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]. Here’s the problem. I love [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy. Yes, ever since I saw [name_m]Christian[/name_m] [name_m]Bale[/name_m] in ‘[name_m]Little[/name_m] Women.’ And yes, I know it’s 2014, not 1864. And yes, I know that it’s a “girl’s name.” I tried to convince myself, with nameberry’s help, that I could call him [name_m]Lauro[/name_m] or [name_m]Lars[/name_m] instead. But, I just really love [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy.
So, what do you think? Be honest. Would it be sentencing a boy to life-long torture to nickname him [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]?
(And, while you’re at it, feel free to throw in what you think of Laureline for a girl. Maybe I put this in the wrong forum.)
I prefer Laureline to [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] (m), but I don’t think either are bad. And I don’t think it matters that Laureline doesn’t “go” with your other favorite names.
I know 2 men named [name_u]Laurie[/name_u], a father and son pair. One is around 65 and the other is around 40. The 40-year-old goes by [name_m]Chip[/name_m] (“chip off the old block” I guess, I don’t know). I remember getting introduced to the father and thinking he had a really interesting name. It does make me think of [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, though.
I knew a little boy called [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]! He might be around 12-13 now. I don’t know if it was short for anything or not. But meeting him, combined with my love for [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, made me love the name. I have [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], nn [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] on my list.
I would never in a million years use [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy (or a girl). I can’t get passed those types of boys names that sound like girls - [name_u]Shannon[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (I know men with all of these names).
Laureline is ok but I am also not a fan of names that end in line.
Sorry I’m negative [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] but you asked
[name_u]Laurie[/name_u] is lovely for a boy. I used it in my book as the name of their [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] character. [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] [name_m]Osgood[/name_m].
I love [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy! But I vastly prefer [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] NN [name_m]Lawry[/name_m], because it just looks manlier, and [name_m]Law[/name_m] is so much cooler than Lau {which is the next NN that I like}. Laureline is very nice; mediaeval, but still plausible. I have no problem with it but I’m not very excited over it either.
I think [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] is lovely for a boy as well, but perhaps maybe [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] would be best, in case there is any teasing that arises? Laureline is beautiful!
[name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and Lauraline sound very feminine., however [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] has always been a nice solid masculine successful masculine name (IMHO) you could always nickname him [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and he could always choose as an adult what he would prefer.
I agree that liking the individual name is more important than the name fitting in a ‘sibset’. The only time I think it’s any kind of issue or odd is when the names are very similar to each other. (Like kids named [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f], or [name_u]Marion[/name_u] and [name_f]Maria[/name_f], or something like that).
I think [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]'s fine for a boy, it’s the kind of cool vintage name that I’ve been really liking lately. I would use [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] as the full name, mostly because I really like the name [name_u]Laurence[/name_u], but also because [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] seems sort of incomplete somehow.
Laureline is nice as well. I don’t think it not being a ‘real’ name matters because it’s similar to several other familiar names, is pretty sounding/looking, and easy to pronounce.
I think it is easier to use to [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy today then it would have been 30-50 years ago when there were more little girls named [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lori[/name_f] around.
If [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] is the full name and your son runs into too much teasing with his nickname, he can always use the full name or switch his nickname to the more traditional, [name_m]Larry[/name_m].
I think [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] with [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] as a short version is great! [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] is adorable for a little boy. I wouldn’t worry for a second about this one.
I read a story once (not [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women) about a boy named [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]. They didn’t tell me it was a “he” at first, just the name, so I thought it was a “she” until about half way into the book. Two of my best friends at the time had moms named [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] so that wasn’t a boy’s name at all to me. And it still isn’t. With [name_u]Laurie[/name_u], I would assume it was a nickname for [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and that it was a girl. If you name a son [name_u]Laurie[/name_u], just be prepared that others will think similarly (since I’m 15) and you might run into a few occasions where the mother of one of his friends is named [name_u]Laurie[/name_u].
I think both are fine and I would name him [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and call him [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]… And now I have to watch little women again thanks a lot lol
I love the name [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] for a boy. Except my moms name is [name_f]Lori[/name_f], so i couldnt use it!
I love names like [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], [name_u]Loren[/name_u] on boys, so [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] isnt quite different from my taste.
