I could really use some help choosing a name for my baby boy! When I was pregnant with my son [name]Soren[/name], I just immediately LOVED his name! I haven’t felt that way about anything this time around… It seems that there are a lot of names that I LIKE, but nothing that just hits me, and I really want to feel in [name]LOVE[/name] with the name! Maybe I just need to live with a few names in my head for a while in order to be convinced?!
I would appreciate any input, ideas, suggestions, and feedback from you berries
Here are some names that I really like:
[name]Dashiell[/name] (pronounced DA-shul) - [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Dash[/name]
[name]August[/name] - sounds strong, Germanic, but still hippie (which I love) and I like Auggie or [name]Gus[/name] as a nn, pairs well with [name]Soren[/name] - [name]Soren[/name] and [name]August[/name]
And some names that are on my list:
[name]Ansel[/name]
[name]Oslo[/name]
Erol
[name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Arlo[/name]
[name]Abel[/name]
[name]Everest[/name]
[name]Forrest[/name]
[name]Angus[/name]
I really like both of your top choices and if it were me, I’d be tempted to do either [name]August[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name] or [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]August[/name].
Would [name]Stellan[/name] be appealing? (I keep going back and forth on whether this suggestion is too similar for brothers, but strong adoration was my initial reaction)
I’m not really a fan of [name]Dashiell[/name] or [name]August[/name] unfortunately. I think [name]Soren[/name] is fantastic and [name]Angus[/name] goes very well with it!
I’ll suggest: [name]Gregor[/name], [name]Gustav[/name], [name]Bjorn[/name], and [name]Ivar[/name].
[name]Do[/name] you or your DH have Scandinavian roots? If not, maybe it would be a good idea to choose a name that is not so obviously Northern European… or maybe you like that as a theme? I first thought of [name]Hugo[/name] for you… [name]Soren[/name] & [name]Hugo[/name] would make a cute pair. [name]Soren[/name] & [name]Gus[/name] sound like they go together, but [name]Dash[/name] & [name]Soren[/name] sound like they were named by two different people… though I like the name, it just doesn’t seem to go with [name]Soren[/name].
teacherma - I feel the exact same way about [name]Stellan[/name]. I really like the name but wonder if it’s too similar for brothers. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I thought of [name]Kellan[/name] but it doesn’t have the same appeal to me as [name]Stellan[/name]. Maybe I just have a thing for those Scandinavian names… I like that they are not common. (btw - are you a teacher? I am, and I have trouble with common names as a result, too many connections to former students!)
mischa - [name]Oscar[/name] is a great name! Is it getting popular? Would you/could you spell it [name]Oskar[/name] to keep with the Scandinavian feel of [name]Soren[/name]?
I really like [name]Jasper[/name], and considered it last time around. I wonder how it pairs with [name]Soren[/name]? It doesn’t evoke the same feelings/images to me. I had always kind of thought of [name]Jasper[/name] as being more old fashioned [name]Americana[/name] (hipster) but maybe I’m totally missing it!
lilysong - I’m not Scandivnavian at all! I had the same thoughts/concerns about [name]Dashiell[/name]. I like the name a lot on it’s own but wonder about the paring with [name]Soren[/name]. (btw - I’m a SMBC so it’s all me doing the naming!)
lolo-dink - [name]Ansel[/name] is a great name and it will remain on my short list! A name that I might need to sit with for a while and see if it starts to outweigh the others.
I periodically call down my hallway “[name]Soren[/name], [name]Dash[/name], time for dinner” or “[name]Soren[/name], [name]August[/name], time for sinner” just to try the names out loud! My son [name]Soren[/name] (age 4) has great fun with this and is very encouraging! He prefers the name [name]Amos[/name] which I really do like but just can’t get past the rhyme with Anus… I teach high school, I hear a lot of name teasing…
[name]Oscar[/name] was No# 177 last year in the US (that’s only 2,186 boys) so unless you have a slew of little [name]Oscar[/name]'s running around your neck of the woods, I wouldn’t worry about popularity too much. I prefer the “c” spelling myself to [name]Oskar[/name]. I was going to suggest another Scandinavian name [name]Jesper[/name] but instead went with [name]Jasper[/name] because I thought that most people would think it was a typo (it’s actually pronounced like “yesper” anyway). I think [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] are fine together. [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Stellan[/name] are kind of matchy. I’m glad your son is having fun with names! Maybe he’s a Nameberry in the making?
I sub full time K-12 and teach summer school in addition to working a local community college. I have so many associations with names in general, so I do find myself seeking out uncommon ones. I still like [name]Stellan[/name] with [name]Soren[/name], but I don’t know how it would play out in day-to-day life. Some other thoughts for your consideration (I do like [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]August[/name] with [name]Soren[/name] though):
[name]Anders[/name]
[name]Andreas[/name]
[name]Ari[/name] (a bit minimalistic, but a nice multicultural name with Scandinavian connections)
[name]Anton[/name]
[name]Edvard[/name]
[name]Henrik[/name]
[name]Henning[/name] (diminutive of [name]Henrik[/name], used as a given name in [name]Sweden[/name], very popular there)
[name]Johan[/name]
[name]Karl[/name]
[name]Kasper[/name] (a Scandinavian form of [name]Jasper[/name]) / [name]Casper[/name] — maybe still a little too Friendly Ghost for some people, but I think it could be a nice alternative to [name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Konrad[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Linus[/name]
[name]Martin[/name]
[name]Matthias[/name]
[name]Nils[/name]
[name]Rasmus[/name] (despite being a band name, this name comes from some Swedish fairy tales)
[name]Rune[/name]
[name]Ulrik[/name]
I really like [name]Soren[/name] a lot! The first name that came to mind to pair with it [name]Angus[/name]. I also really love it paired with [name]Viggo[/name].
You guys are great! Thank you so much for all of the thoughtful feedback and inspiration!
I have to say that I am really loving [name]Jasper[/name]! (Thanks [name]Mischa[/name]!) I thought about it a lot last night and the more I tried it out, the more I really felt like it fit! I can honestly say that it’ s my number 1 pick right now!
[name]Soren[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name]. [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Soren[/name].
tfzolghadr - I would choose [name]Anders[/name] in a minute if it weren’t for the unavoidable nn [name]Andy[/name]… [name]Lars[/name] is wonderful and [name]Leif[/name] is on the short list. If I’m not mistaken, [name]Jasper[/name] has it’s roots in [name]Persia[/name] as well!
You’re quite welcome! I’m quite loving [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] together myself! Have you asked your DH or son what they think of the name?
mischa - I’m a SMBC (single mother by choice) so the naming is all mine! [name]Soren[/name] likes [name]Jasper[/name] but he is really stuck on [name]Amos[/name]… He’s 4, so I may need to tell him that I’m not really sure about [name]Jasper[/name] in order for him to start loving it and trying to sell ME on it I ran it by my brother and he loves [name]Jasper[/name] as well as [name]Jesper[/name], however he preferred [name]Jesper[/name] with the “J” sound rather than the Scandinavian pronounciation of “Yesper.” But I would say [name]Jasper[/name] it is!
