What do you think of [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]? I really love it. I love it’s starry meaning and the myth behind it-plus I happen to be a virgo (this is for me; I’m renaming myself). I also love that it’s at least three syllables because I love longer, elaborate names. That’s definitely not a necessity though. What do you think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like how it looks/this spelling? What does it make you see?
I asked about this new name that I came across a few months ago, Stellula, and most of the replies were negative. I didn’t stop loving it but I did move it down my list. Recently I came across it again and realized just how much I really love the name. Is it really that bad? I love that it means “little star” and that it’s uncommon while still being very familiar. Some were saying that it was too “l” heavy but I think it looks and sounds really pretty, and it’s easy to spell and pronounce. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that most people would find it ugly? I’ve also considered [name_f]Stellina[/name_f], which is beautiful, but I feel like it would get mistaken for [name_f]Selena[/name_f] a lot?
I also love that both [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] and Stellula/[name_f]Stellina[/name_f] remind me of other celestial names that I love but couldn’t use as first names, like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Selena[/name_f].
*Sorry that this is so long!!
Update: I’ve decided to take Stellula off of my first name list. I love it but I don’t know if it’s worth the trouble. I want this name change to be a positive thing not cause a lot of confusion (well no more than the normal, expected amount). Still really love [name_f]Stellina[/name_f] though, and I love the idea of having “S” as a first name initial (don’t know why, it just feels right), but it’d probably get mistaken for [name_f]Selena[/name_f] a lot. I love [name_f]Selena[/name_f] too, but I don’t know if I want to deal with that if it’s going to happen all of the time.
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is cool, not very fond of the triple vowels, but that’s just me. would you consider [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f]? I have loved that name since I read the book when I was a kid. I’m not sure how well it would actually work out, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is very pretty—though, if I heard it instead of read it, I might assume you were saying [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] (which also means “star,” so it kind of works anyway). Not sure how else I would spell it.
Stellula looks nice on paper, but I’m not positive how to pronounce it. My instinct is to rhyme it with [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], and though I love the rhythmic, romantic sound of [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], I’m not loving Stellula.
But, since you’re renaming yourself, how you feel about the name is the most important aspect.
oneofthetrio: I’m familiar with [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f], and I think it’s beautiful, but I don’t love it enough for myself to use. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is one of my favorite names and I just think that it shines best on its own. Thanks for the reply!
ceryle: I didn’t even think of that! Though like you said they both mean star so it doesn’t bother me as much. Hopefully that wouldn’t happen too often though. I say “steh lu lah” so yes it’d rhyme with [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]. I love all of these names but I’m still trying to figure out if they’re the right choice/if they feel right for me. Thanks so much for replying!
Edit: It can be spelled Astraia. I slightly prefer Astraea, but I wanted to know how everyone else felt and if the name looked pretty to them overall.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]! (I tend to be fond of mythological and celestial names.) I can’t personally use it because my partner and her family are Hispanic, so they’d be confused as to why it’s not spelled [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] (which also means star, as you know). Also since you’re a Virgo, it would be really fitting, and could be a good way to explain to people why you chose it.
I understand what people mean about the “-aea” at the end seeming like a lot of vowels, but I also think it’s the clearest way to write it to get the right pronunciation. [name_f]Astraia[/name_f] looks like “as-TRY-uh” to me, which isn’t right. And I actually don’t think the “-aea” is unattractive at all.
Stellula reminds me of the little bat in the children’s book [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f]. Not a bad association by any means, but might be confusing for people? Stellula is actually pretty cute, but it just doesn’t have the same “wow” factor that [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] does for me. Maybe you could be [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] Stellula?
But anyway, I think [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous in both meaning and sound, and I would like to give a 100% thumbs up YES vote for [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]!
I think [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is pretty -would love to meet one! Not a fan of Stellula though, sorry, the meaning is beautiful but I just don’t find the name to be appealing. I like [name_f]Stellina[/name_f] better, though tbh it’s not my favourite either. I prefer just [name_f]Stella[/name_f] on its own, [name_f]Celina[/name_f] or [name_f]Selena[/name_f]. (And yes, [name_f]Stellina[/name_f] will get mistaken often).
I really want to like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]. I totally agree on all the points you’ve made, and adore the connection to the stars and mythology. I love the ‘ae’ in the spelling, the fact it’s rare, beautiful and memorable, and has personality and fire. She’s almost perfect, but the sound has always been a sticking point for me. I do think [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] sounds beautiful, but I pretty quickly found that it’s somewhat reminiscent of ‘Ashtray’, which has put me off so far. Saying it now, I’m kind of not as bothered by it as I once was, but I can see the ‘strae’ part slipping into ‘shtray’ occasionally. I don’t think it’s a huge deal, and I would still be ecstatic to meet one (in fact I think it’s worth another consideration).
I kind of like how Stelulla sounds, probably because I love [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Lula[/name_f]. But possibly for the same reason it sounds a bit off. I don’t think it’s ugly, but I don’t think the ‘St’ at the beginning is all that attractive. I definitely prefer [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]!
silversky109: I’m so happy to hear that you love [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]!! I love celestial and mythological names too (celestial names especially pretty much dominate my lists). Also happy to hear that you like the [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] spelling. It’s actually not the vowel ending that worries me, it’s the beginning -“astr”. Does it look too… pointy? I know that sounds weird but I don’t know how else to explain it. I like the idea of Stellula as a middle name but not if the first name also ends in the “ah” sound. Plus since [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is already a beautiful starry name, I think I’d want to add something different in the middle. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
luneth: [name_f]Happy[/name_f] to hear that you like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Stellina[/name_f]/Stellula but I’ve actually never been a fan of just [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know why. I definitely get where you’re coming from though. The whole [name_f]Stellina[/name_f]/[name_f]Selena[/name_f] thing is the only thing really keeping me from getting too excited about [name_f]Stellina[/name_f]. Thank you so much for replying!
myosotis: Sometimes when I say [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] I actually hear “ashtray” too. Only sometimes though. Ultimately I decided that it didn’t bother me enough to turn me off from the name. I could see why that could ruin the name for you though. Thanks for replying!

Well I say “uh-stray-ah” not “uh-stree-ah” so hopefully that wouldn’t happen? I know that [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]'s a less common name, and I wouldn’t mind having to correct people occasionally, but hopefully it wouldn’t happen too often. Nice to hear that you like [name_f]Stellina[/name_f]! Thanks for commenting.
I really like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]. Since the name is for you, you’re in the best position to decide if it will be easy to wear. Have you tried using it out & about (when talking to strangers, for cafe/takeaway orders, etc)?
Since you’re in the US, this probably won’t affect you, but I think it worth mentioning - [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] is pronounced quite similarly (in my Australian accent: ə-STRAY-ə / uh-STRAY-uh) quite similarly to a common Australian pronunciation of the word “Australia”.
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear that you like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]! I’m not too worried about the name not being wearable, I’m just trying to decide if it feels right for me and if I love it enough. I haven’t gotten around to actually trying it out yet since I’m still feeling it out for myself first. I hope to get around to doing that soon though!
I didn’t know about the [name_f]Astraea[/name_f]/Australia pronunciation thing. That’s interesting. Like you said, since I’m in the us that shouldn’t really effect me too much? Thanks for telling me though! It’s nice to be informed about all of the potential “problems” that could come with choosing the name. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
