A few girl name musings for you

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m having a crisis* about the spelling of Liora/Leora. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Liora[/name_f] is actually more closely Hebrew spelling, yes? [name_f][/name_f] According to behindthename.com[name_f][/name_f], who I see as the most accurate name site. [name_f][/name_f] It means ‘my light’, which is beautiful. [name_f][/name_f] That all being said, I love the way [name_f]Leora[/name_f] looks so much more. [name_f][/name_f] And it has the ‘leo’ part, which gives it a lion flair. [name_f][/name_f] I love that! [name_f][/name_f] But the spelling just isn’t right, and that bothers me. [name_f][/name_f] What are your thoughts on this spelling dilemma?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite combos, by the way, would be [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] or [name_f]Leora[/name_f] [name_f]Aviva[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

*just kidding; it’s not a real crisis.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] next question is…what are your thoughts on [name_f]Ava[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] She’s been steadily climbing my list for a couple of years. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] I think that I started loving it after watching Breeders & hearing it said with a [name_f]British[/name_f] accent. [name_f][/name_f] But even here in the Midwest U.S., I still think it’s so[name_f][/name_f] beautiful. [name_f][/name_f] The bummer is the popularity, which I know ruins the charm of names for some berries. [name_f][/name_f] I don’t hear it a lot in my area at all, oddly. [name_f][/name_f] I mostly hear similar names like [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] & [name_f]Avery[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] And the little girls that aren’t [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Avery[/name_f] are called [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Favorite[/name_m] [name_f]Ava[/name_f] combos are [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] Maybe [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you!!!

I prefer the [name_f]Leora[/name_f] spelling.

[name_f][/name_f]

I LOVE [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and I’m in the Midwest too, and also know no Avas. I see a lot of the same names you reported. So nice to hear someone saying how much they love [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. All I ever hear is people bad-mouthing her popularity.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

[name_f][/name_f]

As for [name_f]Liora[/name_f] v. [name_f]Leora[/name_f], I suppose it depends on how important the Hebrew connection is to you. I do think the [name_f]Liora[/name_f] spelling appears a bit more modern, while [name_f]Leora[/name_f] is more vintage (a la [name_f]Leona[/name_f], [name_f]Leola[/name_f], etc.). I’m also a stickler for the “original”, so I’d personally probably stick with [name_f]Liora[/name_f]. But! I don’t think [name_f]Leora[/name_f] is wrong at all and you can still keep the Hebrew connection with [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] as the chosen middle.

[name_f][/name_f]

On [name_f]Ava[/name_f]: I’ll be honest here [name_f][/name_f]— it’s not my favorite. It’s very popular in my particular area/state, so I think I’m just oversaturated at this point. It sounds like that’s not really the case where you are, though? I do think the sound is pretty, and something like [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] in the middle really jazzes it up!

  1. [name_f][/name_f]

Liora/Leora is unfamiliar enough that I don’t think either spelling would be recognized as the “right” or “wrong” one outside of behindthename. If you like [name_f]Leora[/name_f], [name_f]Leora[/name_f] is fine. You could also try [name_f]Leona[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. It’s popular for a reason. I am also in the midwest US, and I don’t know any Avas personally.

Omg I love both spellings of Liora/Leora [name_f][/name_f]- how beautiful! I do like your point about the ‘Leo’ part giving it a lion flair but then lion is spelled ‘Lio-‘ so it’s kind of there for both. Sorry this isn’t much help deciding but it’s really a matter of what means more to you, the ‘accuracy’ of the spelling or the look of the name on paper.

[name_f][/name_f]

I am a bit over [name_f]Ava[/name_f], due to popularity (I’m in the U.K. and feel like it’s so overdone). Having said that, [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] Birdie?? Exquisite [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Perfect[/name_m] vintage-meets-modern-word-name charm.

On [name_f]Liora[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Leora[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

I think [name_f]Liora[/name_f] is[name_f][/name_f] more closely translated from the Hebrew whereas [name_f]Leora[/name_f] is more anglicized [name_f][/name_f]- and sometimes used as a form of [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] too? I guess it depends what’s most important to you: a close link to Hebrew [name_f][/name_f]- or a name that you prefer the look of and has multiple layers of meaning for you?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is my favourite!

[name_f][/name_f]

On [name_f]Ava[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

It’s a pretty, warm name with a bit of sass, but I have met quite a few now [name_f][/name_f]- along with Evas and [name_m]Adas[/name_m] now? [name_f][/name_f] Still, if popularity isn’t a big deal where you are, it is a pretty choice. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is lovely

[name_f][/name_f]

I’d say check the stats for your state [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- see where [name_f]Ava[/name_f] really sits there

Personally I prefer the [name_f]Liora[/name_f] spelling – the Hebrew connection and beautiful meaning just sell it for me. I’d weigh how much you value the Hebrew connection, and then decide from there. [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is so lovely!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ava[/name_f] is cute, but I’ve personally met too many to ever think of using it. I grew up in the northeast and there were four just in my grade, and where I live now in the southeast I’ve met two more. However, if the popularity doesn’t bother you I say go for it – [name_f]Ava[/name_f] sounds so spunky and light and friendly, and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] & [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] are great!
[name_f][/name_f]Maybe [name_f]Avis[/name_f] or [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] could work as less popular alternatives?

I’d go for [name_f]Liora[/name_f] personally, as growing up around the Jewish community that’s the first spelling I would choose upon impulse. [name_f]Liora[/name_f] is a very pretty name!

[name_f][/name_f]

As for [name_f]Ava[/name_f], I do like the name a lot but it’s very common these days [name_f][/name_f]- I prefer [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Eve[/name_f] myself.

tbh I feel like I’ve seen Jewish berries over the years considering both spellings (and also Leorah/Liorah)… [name_f][/name_f] but I like the streamlined [name_f]Liora[/name_f] a little more (maybe because [name_f]Eliora[/name_f] is my greatest love from this family of names?). [name_f][/name_f] I love [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

Plus I don’t love that according to btn [name_f]Leora[/name_f] is said lay-or-ah rather than lee-or-ah? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] & [name_f]Leora[/name_f] Aviva/Liora [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] are both so lovely, though. [name_f][/name_f] I love Hebrew names and Eliora/Liora is one of my favorites.

[name_f][/name_f]

I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] I don’t love it as much as some other top 10 names (I will always adore [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and Isabella), but I do like it a lot, and love the soft fuchsia-plum color she is in my head. [name_f][/name_f] She is beautiful with so many different combos and I would love to know more Avas! [name_f][/name_f] Despite it being a top 10 name for years and years now, I only know 1, and know of a couple others, but don’t know them personally, I would say. [name_f][/name_f] The [name_f]Ava[/name_f] I know is in her 20s and one of my coworkers, so I would happily meet a little [name_f]Ava[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] I think it’s a fun nn for [name_f]Aviva[/name_f], too, if you ever move her to the FN spot (Aviva [name_m]Lior[/name_m] would be beautiful, too). [name_f][/name_f] I really like your [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] (so springy!), [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] (also very springy!), etc. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] to a lesser extent, although I am a big fan of Pearl… [name_f][/name_f] she just doesn’t shine quite as much as [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] do for me with [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] I love your style, though, and would happily meet a Liora/Leora, [name_f]Ava[/name_f], or [name_f]Aviva[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

ETA: [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Eva[/name_f] (EE-vah) is one of my favorite names/nns for many years now, though, so I personally would pick [name_f]Eva[/name_f] over [name_f]Ava[/name_f] myself… [name_f][/name_f] but I am always happy to see springy [name_f]Ava[/name_f]!

As I understand it, both spellings are equally acceptable transliterations but [name_f]Leora[/name_f] also comes with a history of use by non-Jewish people (relating to [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] I believe and mostly in the late 19th and early 20th century in the U.S.) whereas [name_f]Liora[/name_f] only has Jewish usage.

[name_f][/name_f]

So with that in mind, I think it’s better to go with the spelling you prefer. It’s okay to like what you like and both spellings are used in Jewish communities.

[name_f][/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] as a name. I love the clear bell tone and the simplicity of it. Initially, I think I overlooked it because of popularity, but over the last few years I’ve eased in my general reluctance around popularity and appreciate names a lot more for their sound and vibes. I don’t hear it very often anyway.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is my favourite but all your ideas give off different vibes and are great in their own way.

Liora/Leora are both beautiful. I think [name_f]Liora[/name_f] feels more modern and fashionable. Whereas [name_f]Leora[/name_f] has a more vintage flair due to the similarity of Leona/Leonora/Leonie etc. Regarding which spelling to use I think it depends on the importance of using a Hebrew name and how you feel about original spellings. Personally I prefer original spellings and my mother first language is Hebrew so I would be inclined to use [name_f]Liora[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is gorgeous!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a beautiful name. She’s elegant, warm, has this old school Hollywood glamour feel which I love and feels timeless. I think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] had a burst of popularity around 10 years ago and that sudden spark of usage has died down the name isn’t as popular. However for me popularity isn’t a major concern. From your combinations [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is very charming.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite spelling is [name_f]Liora[/name_f] and my favorite combo is [name_f]Liora[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. Similar to [name_f]Leora[/name_f], I also love [name_f]Leona[/name_f], [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] and [name_f]Leonora[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a sweet name! [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] are beautiful. [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] is one of my favorite names for a girl, but I’m not crazy about [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]. The flow is not convincing me.
[name_f][/name_f]I think [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ava[/name_f] would be perfect for you! [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Aviva[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] would be amazing.
