A few rarities for review

I find boy’s names much more difficult to truly love than girl’s names, so have recently been revisiting and rejuvenating my long list. I’d love some reviews on these names, please?

[b][name_u]Jory[/name_u] /b form of [name_m]George[/name_m]
[b]Taika /b “tiger”
[b]Vox /b “voice”
[b][name_m]Kitto[/name_m] /b form of [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[b][name_m]Idris[/name_m] /b “ardent lord” / (Arabic) “interpreter; to learn”
[b]Daveth /b form of [name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] (Welsh Mythology) God of the sea, perhaps meaning “the sea” in Old Welsh.

Thank you!

It’s so interesting how many different languages the name Taika is in, along with the varying meanings and pronunciations.

On this list I quite like [name_u]Jory[/name_u], Vox, [name_m]Idris[/name_m], and [name_m]Llyr[/name_m]! [name_m]Idris[/name_m] and Vox being my favorites.

I hear you on finding it hard to like boys’ names as much as girls’.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Idris[/name_m]. I love that it has two meanings, its sound and brevity, and that it’s not too ‘out there’ now that people are familiar with the name because of [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f].

[name_m]Kitto[/name_m], [name_u]Jory[/name_u] and Daveth … now wouldn’t they be three great names for brothers? I’m so intrigued by Cornish names generally, so I do really like these three. In my accent, [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] does tend to sound like Kiddo, though, which is not ideal. I prefer [name_m]Jago[/name_m] to [name_u]Jory[/name_u], overall, but I still really like it. Daveth I definitely prefer to the more classic [name_m]David[/name_m], but I still find it a bit bland, probably because it’s just so familiar sounding.

Now Taika is very interesting. I love Taika Waititi’s work, so that makes it even more appealing to me. It’s probably a bit too out there for me considering I have no Maori heritage, but I’d consider it as a middle. Would love to see it being used more!

I’ve never considered Vox … I do like [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_f]Lux[/name_f] and [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] so I see the appeal. I’ve sung in lots of choirs, and Vox is often used in choir names, so I think that’s why I’m not feeling it. I can totally seeing it working as a given name, though.

[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] - love the mythology connection, and it has a lovely gentleness to it, too, which I think offsets the intensity and strength denoted by being the god of the sea. I do hear the work ‘leer’ straight away, though, which I’m not overly fond of. I could see it being used in Wales no problems, but maybe not as a first name outside of Wales.

An interesting bunch of names to ponder!

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] is gorgeous! Taika is intriguing, but I don’t like the others. I know a woman [name_u]Jory[/name_u], it seems feminine to me. [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] reminds me of kiddo. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not a fan of the sound of Vox, Daveth or [name_m]Llyr[/name_m]

[name_u]Jory[/name_u] - I like the laid back feel of [name_u]Jory[/name_u]. It feels kind of rugged but also gentle
Taika - it’s interesting and unique, but there’s also something familiar about it - plus a great meaning
Vox - not a fan tbh, feels a bit awkward
[name_m]Kitto[/name_m] - I think a pp pointed out it sounds a lot like Kiddo. I do kind of like it but [name_u]Kit[/name_u] ‘[name_m]Kitto[/name_m]’ would be my preference
[name_m]Idris[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Idris[/name_m]!! It’s mystical and soft but also tough and grounded!
Daveth - I think it could grow on me
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] - love the meaning and the feel, but the similarity to the word leer puts me off a little

My favourites are [name_m]Idris[/name_m], [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] and Taika, which are all full of punch and energy. Daveth is lovely too, but I marginally prefer the softer Welsh [name_m]Dafydd[/name_m]. [name_u]Jory[/name_u] has a nice, happy-go-lucky feel, but its look and sound don’t excite me particularly.

I can see [name_m]Llyr[/name_m] confusing people quite a bit with the pronunciation, and Vox strikes me as a curious choice for a name.

Thank you all for your reviews!

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] is definitely sticking around - he’s such a lovely little thing, sweet and gentle, yet strong. I adore the ‘passionate, zealous’ Welsh meaning - just adds more life into the name.
Taika I do like a lot, but I find myself loving the meaning (my father only ever called me ‘[name_m]Tiger[/name_m]’ growing up) more than the name itself.
I think I like the idea of Daveth more than the name itself (as [name_m]David[/name_m] is a very prominent name on my partner’s side). I do enjoy the -th ending (as in Trueth & [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] I’m liking for girl’s at the moment) but I’m not loving it.
I really want to love [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] as I do love -o ending names in general, however, as many mentioned, it does sound a little too much like ‘kiddo’, which is not the greatest. I’ll stick with my little [name_u]Cato[/name_u].
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] is a recent addition as I just thought it interesting. I believe I read somewhere once that [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] may have derived ([name_m]King[/name_m]) Lear from [name_m]Llyr[/name_m], which is kind of cool (though I’m not really a [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] fan as such). I think this one will stick around on the long list a while longer.
As George was my father’s middle name, and my brother already used that for his son’s middle, Jory will liely stick around. Although I don’t love it, I like it well enough.
Vox is just kind of cool to say, and I do love x’s in names, as well as short little Nyx & Lux or girls. It could make for a cool middle, but yeah, I’m not totally loving it, yet.

I’m not big on these, but…

I think Taika is not too bad if the nickname is [name_u]Tai[/name_u].

[name_u]Jory[/name_u] is okay.

I really don’t like [name_m]Idris[/name_m]. It just makes me think of idiot and drizzle.

I really like Vox, [name_m]Idris[/name_m], and [name_m]Llyr[/name_m].

Great list.
[name_u]Jory[/name_u] I love. It’s sweet and simple and a little exotic.
Taika I don’t dislike but see spelling and pronunciation being a constant battle.
Vox is very cool. Fits in with trendy names like [name_m]Jax[/name_m], [name_m]Dax[/name_m], [name_m]Axl[/name_m].
[name_m]Kitto[/name_m] is very sweet. Though in my accent sounds like kiddo… So I like it more on paper than I do in real life.
[name_m]Idris[/name_m] I’ve always loved.
Daveth again I like on paper… But said out loud sounds like [name_m]Davis[/name_m] with a lisp.
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] is both strong and simple… Which I feel like is a rarity. I really like it.

[name_u]Jory[/name_u]: It’s fine. I don’t like it, but it’s not terrible. Fits in with [name_u]Jody[/name_u] and [name_u]Cory[/name_u] and [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u].
Taika: This is cool, but unless you live in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand I bet it’d get mispronounced a lot.
Vox: Too feminine for a boy.
[name_m]Kitto[/name_m]: Fine as a nickname, not as a full name.
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]: It’s okay.
Daveth: Too lispy.
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m]: Everything I’ve read says that English speakers are basically incapable of saying the Welsh Ll correctly, so I’m gonna say no unless you live in [name_m]Wales[/name_m].

I quite like [name_u]Jory[/name_u], it fits in with the current trends and reminds me a lot of [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. I would probably use it as a nickname for [name_m]George[/name_m]. Taika reminds me too much of ‘taiga’, so I’m not a huge fan. Vox sounds a lot like doxing and would have too much of a negative connotation. I much prefer [name_u]Kit[/name_u] to [name_m]Kitto[/name_m], as a pp pointed out, it sounds too much like ‘kiddo’. [name_m]Idris[/name_m] and Daveth are handsome and lovely. [name_m]Llyr[/name_m] is my favorite on your list! I would definitely use it if given the chance.

I really like [name_u]Jory[/name_u] and [name_m]Idris[/name_m] - both are super unusual, but strong, friendly, and definitely usable. Not an easy feat!!!

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_u]Jory[/name_u] has a lot of R, but I like it. I’m also crushing on the name Taika.
You have some interesting names, I love the Welsh!

[name_u]Jory[/name_u]: I like it, but it’s definitely not my favourite Cornish name or form of [name_m]George[/name_m]. As a few others have said, it’s got a nice sound and friendly, laid-back vibe, but feels a little unexciting to me. I much prefer [name_m]Jago[/name_m] for a short, cool Cornish J- name, or [name_m]Jura[/name_m] for an interesting international form of [name_m]George[/name_m].

Taika: Rather “out there”, but I like the sound and the meaning. In a similar vein, I like Tarka and have occasionally stumbled across it in Telegraph [name_m]BAs[/name_m].

Vox: Very, very cool — to the point of feeling a little bit “celebrity baby name”, perhaps? But I do love the funky, spiky sound.

[name_m]Kitto[/name_m]: Awesome name! My [name_u]Kit[/name_u] gets called this from time to time; I think it’s really jaunty and fun to say.

[name_m]Idris[/name_m]: [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]. My favourite here; I think it’s strong, crisp, cool and distinctive. A great and greatly underappreciated name that travels really well.

Daveth: “[name_m]Dave[/name_m]” isn’t the most appealing name beginning (or potential nickname) to me — its a definite “dad name” in my mind — plus the -eth ending reminds me of [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] and [name_m]Gareth[/name_m], which feel similarly dated here. I do have a Welsh friend called [name_m]Dafydd[/name_m] (same pronunciation), which I prefer, or I really like the Scottish [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] as a fresh [name_m]David[/name_m] variant.

[name_m]Llyr[/name_m]: [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, as well as its more streamlined variant/soundalike Lir. A light and airy, yet powerful, name. I love its simplicity and intriguing mythological background.

As a Welsh person I am wondering how you guys pronounce ‘[name_m]Llyr[/name_m]’?
“Ll” has a very specific sound in welsh which most non welsh speakers cannot pronounce.
I wouldn’t go with this name unless you are IN wales or don’t mind the fact that if you are not in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] it would be pronounced technically wrongly by almost everyone.

[name_u]Jory[/name_u] - I do like [name_u]Jory[/name_u], but I think I prefer the more common [name_u]Rory[/name_u].
Taika - Not my style, and I’m not sure how to pronounce it.
Vox - This doesn’t read as a name to me. Something about the sound is really harsh, and it reminds me of a product more than a baby. But, it does fit with certain current naming trends so I could see it working.
[name_m]Kitto[/name_m] - I would only use this as a nickname for [name_u]Kit[/name_u] or [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], but I think it’s charming.
[name_m]Idris[/name_m] - I love that [name_m]Idris[/name_m] is both Welsh and Arabic, and I think it’s a very cool up-and-coming name.
Daveth - I don’t love it. I prefer [name_m]Donovan[/name_m], [name_m]Davy[/name_m], [name_m]Gareth[/name_m], etc.
[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] - Ok I actually love the look, meaning, and history of this name but I can NOT figure out how to pronounce it! I’ve tried to watch videos about the Welsh “Ll” but this American just can’t do it. If you’re Welsh, I say go for it!

I’ve loved [name_m]Idris[/name_m] for a long time! It always makes me think of a prince! I don’t even know why. Also really like [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] and [name_u]Jory[/name_u]! I wouldn’t know how to pronounce [name_m]Llyr[/name_m].

[name_m]Llyr[/name_m] is great! I have Lir, the Irish version, on my list. I like [name_m]Idris[/name_m] too - handsome name, and [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] is a great namesake!

[name_m]Kitto[/name_m] means “surely” or “certainly” in Japanese so that one doesn’t really register as a name to me.

I have exactly the same problem! There are only one or two boy names that I truly love and would name a child, so I find it quite difficult coming up with boys combos.

I love [name_m]Kitto[/name_m] from your list! I can definitely see [name_u]Jory[/name_u] on a little boy too. The rest aren’t my personal style, but they have interesting sounds and meanings and I can see them working [name_m]IRL[/name_m].
