So in my last thread someone suggested the name [name_u]Kai[/name_u] to me. I’ve always liked it, but never really put it on one of my lists because it’s very short and almost seems too international for me to use. I might be Hispanic but I look very white, haha. Which got me thinking…maybe I could use it as a nickname for a longer name?
So, what full names could [name_u]Kai[/name_u] be used as a nickname for? It can be direct or kind of a stretch, I don’t mind. [name_m]Just[/name_m] need ideas!
[name_u]Loki[/name_u]
[name_u]Skyler[/name_u] / [name_u]Skylar[/name_u]
[name_m]Kyler[/name_m]
[name_u]Kyle[/name_u]
Ikaika - means “strong” in Hawaiian
[name_m]Kaiden[/name_m] / [name_m]Caiden[/name_m]
[name_m]Kain[/name_m] / [name_m]Cain[/name_m]
Kaipo - means “the sweetheart” in Hawaiian, technically unisex
[name_m]Kaiser[/name_m] - [name_m]German[/name_m] title
Kaito - Japanese name (kai - sea, and to - to fly), also the name of a constellation [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] [name_m]Major[/name_m]
[name_m]Malakai[/name_m] - alternate spelling
Mordikai - alternate spelling
Ekain - means “[name_u]June[/name_u]” in Basque
Cainan
[name_m]Kaius[/name_m] / [name_m]Caius[/name_m]
Kaipo does mean sweetheart but it’s not pronounced kai - po it’s pronounced ka - ipo. Kaip” - pronounced kai-po - is the dark ocean (kai means ocean & p” means night/dark).
I’m Hawaiian and from Hawai`i…no matter what the online dictionaries tell you, Kaipo (meaning sweetheart) is not unisex, it’s a girl’s name. Kaip” (meaning dark ocean) is most consistently a boy’s name but can be a girl’s game.
I love [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as a stand alone name, but I’ve always loved the idea of [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] (another favourite) nn [name_u]Kai[/name_u].
Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions!! I love [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]/[name_m]Malakai[/name_m], [name_m]Kyson[/name_m], and I love the idea of [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] nn [name_u]Kai[/name_u]! But my problem is if I’m not Russian would it be weird to name a kid [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m]?
Also another question I just thought of…my boyfriend’s cousin’s wife is having a baby girl in may named [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. My boyfriend and I won’t be having kids for another 5 - 10 years…and we wouldn’t live near them. We’d probably only see them holidays. If we were to use the name [name_u]Kai[/name_u], or at least [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as a nickname…would that be too close? D:
My favorite choice for a [name_u]Kai[/name_u] name. I’d rather spell it [name_m]Kaiden[/name_m] - but unfortunately that tends to read as [name_u]Kayden[/name_u]/[name_m]Caden[/name_m].
[name_m]Caius[/name_m]/[name_m]Kaius[/name_m] and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] are good ones. My first thought was either [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u]/[name_u]Skyler[/name_u] (which is on my own list!), or [name_m]Cuyler[/name_m] (like [name_m]Kyler[/name_m]). My friend has a [name_m]Cuyler[/name_m], who goes by Cuy, and I always thought that was cool. [name_m]Said[/name_m] just like [name_u]Kai[/name_u]. Although I feel like those might be even weirder for someone of Hispanic blood, haha, but there’s no reason they aren’t usable.
