I am certain I want to name my baby after a family member who has passed. A girl, whole name was [name_m]Cecil[/name_m].
She did not like being mistaken for a boy, and so I think it may be fitting to embellish the name slightly.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Cecile[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]? Or just stay with [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] as boys names on girls is less surprising today.
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] is my favourite, but [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Celia[/name_f] are both also lovely! [name_f]Celine[/name_f] might work at a push.
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] or [name_f]Celia[/name_f] to honour a [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] would be beautiful! I would definitely use one of the feminine versions.
Especially since your family member expressed dislike at being a girl-called-[name_m]Cecil[/name_m], I’d go with one of the feminine versions–[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] is visually my favourite, and sounds closest to [name_m]Cecil[/name_m], but you can’t go wrong with any version of the name!
[name_m]Cecil[/name_m] on a girl is still weird. I would hate it if my parents called me that. Definitely go with [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecile[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] would be the best options if you would like to stay close to the original name, but you might also consider [name_f]Zilla[/name_f] or [name_f]Sheila[/name_f] (the [name_m]German[/name_m] and Irish forms respectively), or an unrelated but similar name such as [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], or [name_f]Celestine[/name_f].
My favourites would be [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Celestine[/name_f].
[name_m]Just[/name_m] as a point of interest, [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] actually goes back centuries as a feminine name. A famous example is [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], the 19th century hymn-writer, and I also have a female [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] on my family tree, born in the 15th century. So, it’s not as “weird” as all that. I think it makes a lovely girls’ name (and a nice boys’ name too, for that matter), but I agree with the previous posters that it might make life complicated for a modern girl.
