There just no other way to describe my taste in girl names than “hipster.” I’ve decided to embrace it… LOL.
I’ll try to keep a long story short. Our girl’s choice for our son (had he been a girl) was [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]. While I still love it, I had a few new thoughts.
I am starting to love the name Chickadee as a possible mn option if our next child is a girl. Explanation: DH and I both love watching birds, and we both have grandparents who were/are avid bird watchers. The chickadee is my favorite bird. I think Chickadee has such a fun, flitting flow to it. Nature-based, but not over-done. A fun way to honor an activity we both enjoy and an indirect way to honor our grandparents.
Possible combos being considered: [name_f]Edna[/name_f] Chickadee ([name_f]Edna[/name_f] was my great grandmother,) and [name_u]June[/name_u] Chickadee ([name_u]June[/name_u] is above mentioned bird-watching grandmother.) I realize both names sound extremely hipster, and may sound like we’re trying too hard to be unique or cool. But the truth is, the names have significant meaning for us!
Thoughts on Chickadee and above mentioned combos? Also, thoughts on possible [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] associations with he name [name_u]June[/name_u] Chickadee? (I’ve never seen the show, but it’s come to my attention that [name_u]June[/name_u] and Chickadee are both characters on it.) Thanks in advance!
Oh wow! Chickadee is an adorable nickname, but as a first name, or even a middle, it is a bit odd.
What about using one of these names instead:
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Deidre[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ondine[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_u]Cassidy[/name_u]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
nn Chickadee
No matter what reason you have for giving your child a certain name, you won’t always get a chance to explain that out in the world. A woman may lovingly name her daughter [name_f]Diamond[/name_f] in honor of a relative, but all anyone else will see without an explanation of that is a stripper name. That’s my rule for naming, I think. [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Edna[/name_f] are totally fine, but how will Chikadee look on a job resume or school transcript?
Chikadee is something my mom has called me off and on since I was little, and it isn’t part of my name. I don’t think it needs to be part of your daughters name either.
Usually my attitude is that almost anything in the middle spot, but Chickadee just doesn’t seem fair, unless MAYBE it’s a second middle so there’s more of a chance that your child can keep people from knowing about it if she finds it embarrassing.
The idea to use a bird name IS a great one, but as tempting as it is to use your favorite bird, I’d pass in favor of [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f], Aloutte, [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_u]Falcon[/name_u], [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_u]Raven[/name_u], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_m]Heron[/name_m], [name_f]Starling[/name_f], or [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].
Now as for the first names - [name_f]Edna[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u] are sweet, simple, old-fashioned, and don’t read as try-hard to me at all. I’ve seen [name_u]June[/name_u] around lately - often as a middle - but it still feels refreshing. And I think it’s about time for a baby [name_f]Edna[/name_f].
I wouldn’t personally choose Chickadee as a name. You could always make it a nickname although (to my surprise) I don’t absolutely hate it as a middle name, especially since you don’t have to put a middle name on a resume. You might a also consider using it as a second middle name, so she has the option to use a more traditional name if she wants.
The only thing I will say about [name_u]June[/name_u] Chickadee is it sounds a lot more hippie than hipster to me - definitely a strong nature vibe. If you aren’t an outdoorsy family it might seem a bit odd. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_u]Eden[/name_u] are also options similar to [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. I do like [name_f]Edie[/name_f] as a nickname (it’s reminiscent of [name_f]Edie[/name_f] Sedgwick, who, while tragic, was very stylish).
I love bird names (Nightingale, [name_f]Lark[/name_f] and [name_f]Alouette[/name_f] are my favourites) but Chickadee sounds comical to me I’m afraid. [name_u]June[/name_u] is wonderful though and I love the suggestion of [name_f]Edie[/name_f].
I think Chickadee is a great nickname … and one that doesn’t need to have a relation to the name to use. Actually, it’s probably something I’ll call my lil’ one just because I absolutely love the bird and it’s such a fun/cute sound/bird. [name_f]My[/name_f] sweet lil’ chickadee…
[name_f]Edna[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u] are both lovely names. I really like [name_f]Junia[/name_f] as a variation of [name_u]June[/name_u]. I’m not sure if anyone else has this association but [name_f]Alouette[/name_f] is also the brand name of a cheese.
I also like [name_f]Starling[/name_f], [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Myna[/name_f], and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] as other possible bird names/baby names.
All that said, professionally speaking she can leave out her middle name if she feels it will hinder her. Honestly, many bird names might raise an eyebrow. I always tend to hope that people aren’t that judgmental and again, it’s in the middle. We generally use initials or nothing at all on paper even when our middle name is [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Mae[/name_f].
Despite concerns, I love Chickadee. I do think it is a little out there, but since it’s a middle name, it wouldn’t be as much of a problem. [name_f]Edna[/name_f] Chickadee is adorable, [name_u]June[/name_u] Chickadee does remind of “[name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_u]Boo[/name_u] [name_u]Boo[/name_u]”.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] is beautiful, as well.
Some Nature-y Suggestions:
Bellium - Genus of flowering plants in the daisy family
Asphodel
Celandine
[name_f]Aster[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenaida[/name_f] - A type of dove
[name_f]Avis[/name_f]/Aves
Cissa - A genus of magpies
I think you daughter will be teased if you give her that middle name. You may like its symbolism but she may not thank you for it. [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Edna[/name_f] aren’t my taste but they’re perfectly serviceable.
I love some of the bird names mentioned in the above post especially [name_f]Lark[/name_f]. It’s short, sweet uncommon and easily spelt.
Chickadee is unexpected but it’s sweet and I believe anything goes in the middle. That’s the place to “gift” your child with a name that is full of meaning. So I would encourage you to use it. I am not a fan of [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Edna[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] idea of classic is more towards the [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] Chickadee? cute!
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Chickadee? I like this a lot!
I personally think anything can go into the middle as middle names don’t come up much…she doesn’t have to tell anyone her middle name…teachers don’t normally call out " Edna Chickadee" for attendance so it isn’t likely her peers would know and be able to tease her…unlike if you used Chickadee as a first. I’m not a huge fan of Chickadee but if you like it I would go for it. A friend of mine knows someone born on [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] named “[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]” Sure it’s out there but hasn’t caused any problems. Also know a little girl named [name_f]Melissa[/name_f] [name_f]Cinnamon[/name_f].
I used to be in the “anything goes” camp for middle names, but then it hit me: when are middle names typically used? Formal situations! At every school graduation I’ve attended my first and middle name were called. When I was voting in 2012 the woman working behind the desk asked for my full name. [name_f]My[/name_f] diploma has my entire name. In my state, your full name is on your driver’s license. When you fill out any medical paperwork, they require your middle name. Your passport has your full name. Your all-important birth certificate obviously has your full name. And with identity theft becoming so prevelant, your middle name will become more important than ever to identify and differentiate you. Almost every significant document and form that you’ll sign over the course of your life will require your middle name. So to sum up: as sweet as Chickadee is, I would give it a serious rethink.
I’d have to echo what’s been said before, Chickadee is a really sweet thing to call your child but don’t make it an actual part of her official name. [name_f]My[/name_f] parents called us all sorts of pet names (lamb, chicken, matey, sweetie, etc), I think it’s a natural thing to do to express affection. You should totally call her Chickadee if it comes naturally as a pet name to you, it could even become a family and close family friends nickname that survives into adulthood, but it’s not good for other contexts which don’t involve affection and intimacy.
