Dear all,
longtime lurker, first (?) time poster. Sorry this is long!
So I have a a sweet yet spunky daughter named [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. The name originally struck a chord with me because I’m a fan of 1890s novels. The meaning is also perfect for a spring baby, but not too frilly for a grown woman. All in all, I feel that it’s the perfect name, and perfect for her. But I get that some may think of bacteria. So be it. Overwhelmingly, the reaction has been positive - it helps that we live close to [name_f]Italy[/name_f]!
While I’m super stoked about my daughter’s name, I’m really struggling to find a name for her baby brother, due in autumn. After all these years I seem to have developed a case of name fatigue!
For her brother’s name, I considered matching some of the characteristics of “[name_f]Flora[/name_f]”:
- vintage (but not really classical?)
- relatively rare
- not gender-neutral, but rather masculine (as “[name_f]Flora[/name_f]” is very feminine (floral))
- simple and short
- easy to spell
- perhaps [name_m]Roman[/name_m]/Italian, but needs to be somewhat ambiguous (“[name_f]Flora[/name_f]” works in many languages)
- seems impossible, but I’ll add: meaningful in whatever direction (related to season, for instance?)
My husband’s all-time favorite boy’s name is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. It meets some of my criteria and I’d go with it in a heartbeat, except it’s super popular where we live.
Other names that got thrown around: [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] (got vetoed because of the tv series),
[name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Luis[/name_m], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_u]Elia/name_u (all fine, but far too popular),
[name_m]Otis[/name_m] (I find it cool, strong, and fun to say, and it repeats the “O” in [name_f]Flora[/name_f]'s name, but every other elevator here was manufactured by the [name_m]Otis[/name_m] Co.),
[name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Lennart[/name_m] (feel dated to me, as the kids I grew up with often had Scandinavian names such as these),
[name_m]Silas[/name_m] (would work well with sister’s name, but don’t love its sound),
Italian names such as [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], [name_m]Leandro[/name_m] (TOO Italian for our [name_m]German[/name_m] last name),
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m] (none of us has red hair),
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] (difficult to say?) and on and on.
Here it is, I still have some months to go, but I very much hope for your input. Thanks in advance!
