I am posting this question out of sheer curiosity! I am not pregnant yet but my husband and I are trying to conceive, and I was just wondering how others would see the circumstance.
My cousin just had a baby and named her [name_f]Aria[/name_f], which is a lovely and beautiful name that is very similar to one of my favourite names- [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. I don’t have anything against similar names but I know that my cousin chose [name_f]Aria[/name_f] to break away from traditional cultural names commonly used in our family.
If I ever gave this name to a future daughter, my plan was never to use [name_f]Aria[/name_f] as a nn but I can’t help but feel they are too similar! The name [name_f]Aria[/name_f] has never even come up in conversation with my husband, funny enough.
We also love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (and if it came down to choosing, we would only use one or the other due to the harsh “AR” sound). [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] has always been a guilty pleasure name since I think most view it as a masculine name…
Is it best to move on and look for something completely different, or stick to what I love should I ever have a daughter? Interested to hear if anyone has any thoughts or similar conundrums
First off, I absolutely love both [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]! Despite the similar look of the two, out loud I don’t think [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] are all that close. If you really love it, I would maybe have a talk with your cousin and see if it’s okay. That being said, I think [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] would be a great solution. I am very biased since she’s my second favourite name, but at the end of the day it’s the name of a goddess, which completely rules out any ‘too masculine’ comments in my opinion. I think [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is a strong, intelligent sounding name, that works perfectly for a girl.
These names have their own Ahry v Airee sound. But they look very much related so I agree that it would be worth a quick chat with cousin — assuming your kids would see each other a lot and confusion / overlap could arise. She might not mind!
I would ask your cousin if she minds, as [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] are fairly similar imo. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] definitely works as another option, though.
They are very similar and I think the reaons behind her chosing [name_f]Aria[/name_f] would be enough to sway me to not use [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. It’s a shame though, because [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is beautiful.
Maybe you could ask her, should you ever have a daughter? She might not think it is too close, so it is worth asking.
You have great taste. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] are stunning names.
But in my opinion, [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] are far enough away for this to be a non-issue. I don’t think it’s necessary to ask your cousin. I don’t really think that is necessary given how different the names are. Giving a heads up would be nice, though, to gauge how she feels, and let her know it’s a possibility so she isn’t blindsided. However, I honestly think any reasonable person would be understanding, especially if it’s been a long-time favorite of yours. It’d be cruel for her to get upset or ask you not to use it, especially since the names are different.
But regardless, unless your families are insanely close, it shouldn’t be an issue past baby age. I mean, how many of us spend time with or even know the children of our parents’ cousins?
In any case, the names are totally different, the only similarity being the way they look on paper. [name_f]Aria[/name_f] is pronounced “are-ee-uh” and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is pronounce "air-ee-add-nee. The stressed syllable is different. The only similar vowel sound is the “i”. They just happened to be similarly spelled. I mean I don’t think anyone would bat an eye at one person named Eriadne with a cousin [name_f]Arya[/name_f]. Or [name_f]Aria[/name_f] with a cousin [name_f]Marian[/name_f], which also contains “aria.” Or [name_f]Erin[/name_f] with a cousin named [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], which is about how similar these names are to me.
But, if you want to call her [name_f]Aria[/name_f] as a nick name, I would suggest the courtesy of not doing it at family events, or when little [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] would be around [name_f]Aria[/name_f].
In my opinion, [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] aren’t even pronounced the same therefore they are not similar. The spelling may be similar but who really cares I think.
I think that [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] are different enough that it is a non-issue. I would only worry if [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] have the same last name and will be in the same schools growing up.
[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: I would also make a conscious effort not to overlap nicknames.
I probably wouldn’t eliminate them from my list if I were in your situation but they would just naturally get lower on the list as the similarity would bug me… My husband and I actually agreed on a name for our youngest, told our family and friends and a month later my best friend had a boy and gave him a similar name… I told myself all the reasons it didn’t matter, but it still felt strange to me. Her son primarily goes by a nickname that our chosen name could also go by… [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it wasn’t our favorite nickname option. It still seemed weird because I always want my children to be able to pick their nickname and I guess it felt like my friend’s son eliminated one of his nickname options… which is silly. It’s all silly. But, it just didn’t feel right any more and we looked back on our list and realized one we had eliminated was probably the best option for us all along. I have no regrets. I’m obsessed with my little guy’s name and I can’t picture him as our original choice.
Sorry for the long, rambling story. But it seems like a similar situation so I thought I’d share.
I agree that this is something you should probably speak to your cousin about. On paper [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] look similar but out loud they have different sounds. [name_m]How[/name_m] often would these cousins see each other?
Personally, I don’t like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], but if anything I think thats even close to [name_f]Aria[/name_f] as they both have the same ‘Ar’ sound at the beginning.
They’re pronounced differently so I’d say it was okay, but speak to your cousin if you think you’ll definitely use it just to see how she feels. I agree with what a poster said previously about if they have the same surname and will be at school together - there might be some confusion there because of school registers etc.
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is an amazing name if you wanted to go for something completely different to [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. If you feel like it’s too masculine, how about [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]?
I don’t think they’re too similar at all. Honestly, I’m not sure I think giving your cousin a “heads up” is even necessary. I understand that she was trying to be different, but the names aren’t similar in sound, and [name_f]Aria[/name_f] is a relatively common name (at least in the US). If she’s upset about it, then it’s her problem. It’s not like it’s the same exact name. If that were the case, this would be a different story.
To be totally honest, I don’t understand what she could be upset about. First of all, [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Aria[/name_f] are unrelated names. It’s not like you’re using [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. Secondly, it isn’t as if [name_f]Aria[/name_f] is an uncommon name, or has uncommon sounds. Between [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], it’s not incredibly unique in the real world (not a dig on the name [name_f]Aria[/name_f], I love the name [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. It’s just not uncommon). Third, this is your favorite name. If the roles were reversed, and you had your [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] first, would she have an easy time giving up [name_f]Aria[/name_f]?
Basically, the thought of the names being too close would not have gone through my mind if I were in your shoes.
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is gorgeous! One of my favorites!
