A New Start: Finding The One

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - like this one
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - prefer [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - lovely
Eostre - lovely
Éowyn - lovely
Hesperia - prefer Hespera, but this is also nice
[name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] - dislike
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - like this one
Nyneve - OK, nice name, but prefer Niniane or Nimue
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] - OK, nothing wrong with it
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] - like this one
Polymnia - dislike, sorry
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] - like this one
Vespertine or Vesperina - both are OK
Xantippe - OK

Top five:
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]

special mentions to [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] and [name_f]Ursula[/name_f].

So, I’m still Nuvi’s biggest fan, I think. And I’m not even a Tolkien- girl! Sylvestra (nn Ylva- oh my god) and [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] follow as third and forth. (Second is empty as Tinuvuel is way ahead) I’m only gonna list up the ones I feel could take up the battle with your others if you really feel your missing something.

Éowyn - I could sacrifice [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] for her, but not [name_m]Tin[/name_m]úviel.

[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - I do think this can fight [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] and win! I adore the fresh sound and I get a piratey- wind in the hair- saltwater in the nose- feeling. She’s just as dark and stormy as [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], but she has more power over it- I feel. This one would share a third with Sylvestra.

[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]- I love it, but your going back and forth on it makes me think you’ll never quite commit?

So there’s [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] vs [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]. That’s a tough one. [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] the namesake wins, hands down. She’s epic. I think if I ignore the namesakes I like the sound of [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] more. Also, using [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] means Tinuviel is out, so I vote keep [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] because [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] would eliminate two names, not just one. Make sense? Sorry, I’ve had a bit to drink.

So what’s next. Dramatic water girl? Hmm. It’s no secret I’m a hardcore [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] lover, but I think for you I’m loving [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] more. Gosh, [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] is so wonderful though. Plus [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] gives you two A’s which might bug you later. I don’t think it’s bad, myself. You’ll be having more babies if everything works out, so there will only be two A’s for a bit, and then the rest of the alphabet’s going to take over. Um, okay yes, I’m voting [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. I don’t much liike [name_f]Ourania[/name_f], sorry. I can see why you would, and I think she could do some wonderful things in the middle. She is pretty, isn’t she? Lots of interesting nicknames. Sticking with [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. I can’t believe I’m picking her over [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]. I just think [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] has been on and off the list too much for you, so it’s best to be safe with one that hubby isn’t going to change his mind over.

Then there’s [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] and Nyneve. My personal favorite is Nyneve. I think [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] feels more you. Maybe I’m wrong. I can’t decide betwen these two sorry. Except, I think I am going with [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] because it feels stronger as a first. Nyneve is magic in the middle. Keep her as a middle!

So for snow and stars, is it [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] AND [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], Hesperia, Vespertine/a? Or one of those 4? [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] all the way if only one. If it’s another snowy star girl in addition to [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. Not even a contest for me.

[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]… [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]! Yes, do this. Such a gorgeous name. Seriously. She’s a character in one of my books and it’s always one I secretly wanted to keep for a baby but I don’t even have to ask I know SO would roll his eyes at me. Yes, there’s tragedy, but there’s tragedy in lots of names people use. Um, [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] anyone? And others. Can’t think of anymore at the moment, starting to get sleepy.

I’m going [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] over [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], tho [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] is very pretty, and so dark and delicious. I think I said before [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] was too closely tied to HBC for me, and she is, but f*ck it, so what? HBC is awesome. And also, I get a feeling baby is a little [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f].

The hills and romance, hmm. [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] by far, I don’t care for the other two. Eostre, I can see the beauty, but I’m not sure the general public would. Maybe? If it’s [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] vs [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] vs Tinuviel, I’m afraid [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] loses, for the reasons I already said. If you can do with two wen names and two Tolkien names, [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]!! If not, eh. I’m going to pass here as I can’t picture Eostre on a little girl, and I don’t care for [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]. Better not to comment than be negative.

I feel like you’ve had better garden girl names on your list before, but if it’s between these three, Polymnia, with Hesperia a close second.

Pretty sure I haven’t been at all helpful! But

First Names:

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] (or [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
Polymnia
Sylvestra
[name_m]Tin[/name_m]úviel

Middles Names:

Eostre
Éowyn
Hesperia
Nyneve
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] - I can understand liking this one, it’s pretty. I don’t think most names are easily ruined by pop-culture, but I do believe Disney ruined this one, sorry. If you plan on letting your kids watch Disney, I don’t know any little girl that’s going to see that unpleasant sea-witch and think to herself ooh yes, I love sharing a name with her. I read an article a few days ago with a mum trying to teach her son it’s okay to like “girl” toys, and the boy said something about yes, but you’re not teaching the world this mum, only me, and I have to live in the world. Very true. You can teach your little [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] what a lovely name she has, but you can’t teach every child she encounters, and kids can be mean.
Vespertine or Vesperina
Xantippe

if I haven’t made sense sorry, I’ll come back a edit in the morning if it needs editing.

[name_m]Little[/name_m] Whirlie stands up to the microphone, hesitates for a second, reties her hair ribbon and starts weaving her words.

My opinions on your list [nb. the best names are near the top]

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] – Too floaty for Roo’s sister. It would be a lovely middle though.
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] – Oooo. I like this! Has the same twinkle of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. A familiar yet out of this world feeling. Cute nn: [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]* - Oh YES! [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]- curious and inventive and cute and a little bundle of smiles. Cute nn: Commie, [name_f]Mia[/name_f], Osi, [name_f]Mima[/name_f] [ my personal fave nn], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].
Éowyn – I like this one too even though I am not sure how to pronounce it. Would flow lovely will Roo as a sibset. Cute nn: [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
Heleyne – I think this one should start being on the list with [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] as you seem to mention her in every thread. She seems a more placid child, kind and content, glowing golden like the dawn, intelligent with glorious daydreams to far off lands. Cute nn: Ley/[name_f]Leya[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f], [name_f]Enna[/name_f].
Libertas – Seems too ‘private school motto’ to me. Cute nn: [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Berta[/name_f], Ibs.
Nyneve – Not one of my faves but yes it has been on your list for some time and I have no reason to dislike to. Cute nn: [name_f]Neva[/name_f], [name_f]Neve[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f].
[name_f]Nyx[/name_f] – Save for the middle.
[name_f]Ondine[/name_f] – I don’t do all this looking to the stars nonsense but it still is an OK name. It reminds me of Swan [name_u]Lake[/name_u] [[name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Odile[/name_f]]
Rossetti – Pancake [name_f]Poem[/name_f], by [name_f]Christina[/name_f] Rosetti.
Mix a pancake,
Stir a pancake,
Pop it in the pan;
Fry the pancake,
Toss the pancake, -
Catch it if you can.
There are better [name_f]Ro[/name_f]- names out there [[name_m]Ah[/name_m] dear [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] etc.] but at least it is better than Jaxxsyn. Cute nn: [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
[name_f]Soraya[/name_f] – Middle name methinks.
Tellervo – Tell Ervo that he left the telly on. [in other words-nope]
Tempestas/[name_f]Tempest[/name_f] – Middle but oh how I like it as a middle.

‘Names we have considered before but somehow didn’t make it’ Exactly. Why are you considering them again?-Although I do have a soft spot for [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ula[/name_f] and [name_f]Callisto[/name_f].

Names we haven’t (seriously) considered before:
Leucothea – It would be nice if you took of the Leuco bit.
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] – Sounds like a herb. [it is also quite similar to [name_u]Marian[/name_u] hence why I am not suggesting it for a middle]
Venelia – Oooo I like this. Cute nn: [name_f]Via[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f].

Names I like but I wouldn’t name a child (I think, but who knows):
I think you should buy some pets and name them: Cassieardolla, [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f] and all the other names that humans find ‘out there, off the map, maybe in [name_m]Mars[/name_m]’ It wouldsatisfy your naming needs and stop your OH having a panic attack when you ask him ‘dear darling beardy fellow [apologies if he is a non-beardy fellow] I think we should discuss names over tea tonight’

Medusa – There is a character in [name_f]Atlantis[/name_f] called Medusa. I think the names on this program are just your sort of thing Eg.

[name_m]Hercules[/name_m]
Anysia
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
Celandine
Elpis
Heptarian
Itheus
[name_f]Jocasta[/name_f]
Korinna
Laius
Melas
Minos
Minotaur
Oracle
Pasiphae
[name_m]Ramos[/name_m]
Stolos
Therus
Tiresias

A few more suggestions:
[name_f]Ottoline[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerida[/name_f]
[name_f]Galatea[/name_f]
[name_f]Celestia[/name_f]
Isola
[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]
[name_f]Nolwenn[/name_f]

Conclusion: As I have said before, look for the [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]’s. These are the names you have loved over time and haven’t been on your ‘no’ list. Names like Heleyne and [name_f]Tempest[/name_f] that seem to pop up on every thread.

Okay, here comes your against-the-grain opinion…prepare yourself.

Are you ready?

Keep [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] and retire [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] and Tinuviel.

I’m getting the idea that [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] would be far less uphill battle with the Husband. Clearly, you love her literary namesake. It’s far prettier than [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f], which, though I’ve liked it all along and IS a lovely name, is inescapably and solidly a “clunk” name. [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is firm and solid, while having a more tangible delicacy about her. Tinuviel is gorgeous but it shines out beautifully in the middle, whereas [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] makes the best impression right up front. I think it’s a smart trade, and besides, it’s not like you need more names to keep on the list. Having a big list is nice, but when it all comes down to it, what you really NEED is that ONE beautiful, perfect name. I think [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] could be THE ONE, but it’s hard to put two other longtime loves to rest for that ONE.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]: it’s gorgeous. It’s too close to [name_f]Dita[/name_f]. Time to say goodbye singing

These are my “keep” nominations:
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] - I already discussed this one but I wanted to write it in the appropriate column.

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - Sounds so strong and beautiful, a perfect starry night. I didn’t read HP so I have no association for the name there.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - Admittedly less “epic” sounding than many of your other options, it’s still very pretty and would work in your family, particularly with the right middles.

Hesperia - I like this better than Hespera, adding another letter and another syllable somehow makes this one stand up better. I think she has better potential of standing up next to [name_f]Dita[/name_f]. However, I get a similar feel to Vespertine, and I like that one leaps and bounds more.

[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - Pretty and watery and works nicely with [name_f]Dita[/name_f].

Nyneve - I don’t love this one, but it’s pretty and I think it works.

[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] - I don’t love this because it sounds too cutesy to me. I think it also brings the risk of establishing a theme of Epic Mythological Women, whereas [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] gives you a theme of Strong And Epic Women from various sources. Notwithstanding, you still love it and your husband seems to like it, so it makes sense to have a spot on the first name list.

Polymnia - this is more “streamlined,” if you will, than Polyhymnia so it works better. Potential negative: does it remind you of the word “polygamy”?

Vespertine - This is unexpected as a first name and a nice answer to [name_f]Dita[/name_f]. It’s a keeper.

I think these should leave entirely.
Eostre - the “epic” factor here is lacking
[name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]/[name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] - sorry, but I think this one is an “ugly duckling” name next to [name_f]Dita[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - it’s terribly dark, and then it also just sounds like an Irish surname.

Keep as a middle:
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]- because it’s too close to [name_f]Dita[/name_f] for a first.
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] - I think this one is best as a middle name
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] - another clunker that doesn’t feel like the right kind of contrast with [name_f]Dita[/name_f]
Xantippe - the X is cool. Otherwise…notsomuch.

On my way to wormy-work-work. But… quickly…

Oh, my god. [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] would be great! I agree she’s no more tragic than [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and also doesn’t carry that same stigma Mr. Otter was worried about. [name_f]Dita[/name_f] and [name_u]Desi[/name_u]. Super Cute. I love that Hespera is making a come back with Hesperia and [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]/[name_f]Ortensia[/name_f], [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] (which… why didn’t I think of this when I thought about [name_f]Mab[/name_f]? I mean Seriously!), Ouriana and Verspertine/Vesperina.

Dang you have a dilemma with Eowen. She’s gorgeous and great with [name_f]Dita[/name_f], but saying good bye to [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] and Tinuviel? Not so great. Good luck deciding here! Personally I like [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] more than Eowen, but Eowen has the epic namesake that makes her the perfect [name_f]Dita[/name_f] sis.
My favorite of the dramatic underwater names is [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], but as you seem to really love [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] she’s a very close second.
My favorite of the lighter underwater names is [name_f]Melusine[/name_f], she also my favorite of all the underwater names (dark and light).
My favorite snowy name is definitely [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]! second place would be [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], but [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] wins by a mile.
I can’t really decide on the battle maiden. I like Morigan, but not near as much as [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is pretty, but I can’t get past the HP charecter.
Rolling hills, gumption and romance, Eowen of course! But I loath the idea of [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] leaving.
Garden dwellers- love, love, love Polymnia much more streamlined and less clunky than Polyhymnia.

Ooh, I like almost all the names on the new list! And, yes, you should definitely add [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]. She’s a guilty pleasure love of mine. The tragic story doesn’t bother me, but I can’t help seeing the word “demon” every time I see it written down. I just can’t look past that for my own children, but it’s still a name I would love to see other people use, and she sounds so gorgeous in a sibset with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]!

I don’t have much time for in-depth thoughts at the moment, but I’ll put the rest of the names in order from my favorite to least favorite:

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
Vespertine/Vesperina
Sylvestra
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
Xantippe
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
Hesperia
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
Eostre
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] - I’ve always thought that Tinuviel made a much better middle name, so if you can only use one Tolkien name for a first, I vote for going with [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], which seems more wearable in the real world. (But if you can only have one wen/wyn name, my vote goes to [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f].)

Starting here, I’d promote these down to middle options.
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]
Tinuviel
[name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] (definitely prefer it without an “H”)
Polymnia
Nyneve

First and foremost: The [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]/Tinuviel debate.

My response? Keep them ALL for now. And here is why:

    • Mr. Otter has been back and forth on both [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] and Tinuviel for quite some time. He may decide that one or both of them are off the table at the very last minute, and having no backup will make you sooo stressed out.
    • Carrying all three names into the middles stage (granted, [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]'s already been there) will help you determine which ones you truly want to keep. We’ve seen a few names fall off the list altogether because none of the middles seem to sit properly with them.
      – [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is the perfect bridge between Nuvi and [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f], so if you fall out of love with one of them, or can’t decide between them, she’s right there to fill in all the gaps.

Now for the rest of your lovely list!

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] – I find this one both celestial in a space-age/sci-fi sort of way and piratical. Another A, though!! [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f], [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f], [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]…what is it with all these ridiculously fabulous A names?? They’re not making this easy for us, are they?

[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] – She’s really growing on me. Originally I was concerned that a [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] would feel too vilified next to her sister’s light and love. But beyond [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] combines two very bouncy feminine names ([name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]) into something more exotic and powerful, there’s the celestial connection, and I can see this one going piratical as well. Plus…[name_f]Helena[/name_f] Bonham [name_u]Carter[/name_u]. Can anyone really hate a character played by [name_f]Helena[/name_f] Bonham [name_u]Carter[/name_u]?? No matter how evil she’s supposed to be, she’s bewitching and irresistible. I think this one is going on my yes list.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] – I’m falling hard for Cozy. She’s so perfect, celestial and ethereal, but vast and awe-inspiring enough to stand up to her sister. Yes list.

Eostre – I’m going to say no. Ostara, yes. Eostre, no. Eostre is just SO closely linked to estrogen, and given that [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is the goddess of sex as well as love and beauty, I think this just angles the sibset in an unfortunate direction.

Éowyn – To reiterate what I said above, this one goes firmly on the yes list for me!

Hesperia – This has everything that Hesper/Hespera has always lacked for me. That extra syllable – so similar the sounds in “mysterious” and “ethereal” and “wisteria” – pulls the name out of the clunky/lispy category and into the realm of the exotic and evocative. I do think you have much better first name options, but I still like this one for a middle.

[name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] – Definitely no to [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]. The “hor” part is just a yikes moment. I’m not really feeling [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] either, it makes me think of words like “tense” or “ostentatious.” I vastly prefer something sleeker or breathier like Orithyia.

[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] – My favorite mermaid girl. She’s so slinky and silvery and liquid. Yes list for sure!

[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] – I go back and forth on this one…sometimes I see her as sexy and edgy and powerful, fierce and piratical, a steel blade between her teeth and her hair whipping behind her like a ragged black flag. Other times she’s flat and boyish, or that painfully-acted queen bitch who steals people’s talent via sex on Lost Girl.

Nyneve – [name_m]How[/name_m] is this actually pronounced? I keep seeing it pronounced like Nineveh. Which makes me dislike it, even though the spelling is beautiful and I’m totally in love with nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f].

[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] – See [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f]. I really dislike this one…I can’t get past the “urine” sound.

[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] – Swoon! You already know she tops my Yes list. I’ve been wishing her back in the running for ages!

Polymnia – I like this version MUCH better than Polyhymnia. More streamlined, fewer y’s, no hymen problems! I still don’t love her as much as some of you other first name choices.

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] – [name_f]Fey[/name_f] said it all, and PERFECTLY so. I agree with her totally…[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] next to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is a painful thought if these girls are going to be exposed to Disney at all.

Vespertine or Vesperina – I like them both, and I like them better than Hespera. I don’t love them as much as some others though.

Xantippe – I really want to like this one but I just hear a) that stupid presidential slogan “Tippecanoe and [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] Too!” (probably just a US thing), b) tipsy, c) dippy. So my final impression is that Xantippe is either drunk or not very bright. So sorry! Bad Sessha brain…

Last, but most definitely not least, [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] – a resounding YES to this one! She’s so perfect! All the weight and drama of her sister’s name….tragic, but in a grand, sweeping way…with a hint of the [name_f]Mona[/name_f] [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] smile. Swoon.

In summary…

My YESes (in order of swoon):
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]

My Want-to-[name_m]Say[/name_m]-Yes-But-Have-to-[name_m]Say[/name_m]-No: [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]

My Mehs:
Nyneve
Vespertine / Vesperina
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]
Hesperia
Polymnia

My Vetos (in order of ouch):
Eostre
[name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]
[name_f]Ortensia[/name_f]
Xantippe

Ok. I’m back to give my list.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]- hmmm. She doesn’t give me the same powerful feel as her sister. However, she does have that familiar but unusual awesome as a name thing that [name_f]Dita[/name_f]'s name does. If the same initial thing doesn’t bother you, I say keep it.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]- truly beautiful. Sophisticated and regal, but sassy and fun. Very starry and makes me think of the feeling you get when you look up to the sky on a starry night and you can see every star in the sky and you feel infinitely small but in awe of being part of something so vast.

[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]- i very much like Nuvi and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] better.

[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]- if [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] has to go, then this is a good substitute.

Vespertina- I prefer [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], but this has an exotic feel to it.

Husband thinks [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] is bad a** and a “one of the guys” girlie name. He says she needs a girlie nickname though.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - I’m not hugely fond of this name. Feels like stone to me. And it’s another ‘A’ name.
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - This feels harsh, too jagged for a baby girl.
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - I much prefer Columbina, although there’s not much of a connection between the two.
Eostre - I prefer Ostara although baby bunny is actually coming closer to Imbolc.
Éowyn - I love this namesake! It’s instantly recognized as Tolkein though in the same way that [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is HP.
Hesperia - I prefer the spelling Hespera but I do like it as a middle name.
[name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f] - I can’t get on board with this one. Blame [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl.
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - Very silky but feels a bit insignificant.
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]. Does baby give you better feelings than she did for [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]? Either way, I prefer [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]!
Nyneve -I’m not sure how to pronounce this.
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] - more of a middle name.
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] - also love. Great with nicknames too: Pandy, Panda, [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_u]Rory[/name_u]…
Polymnia - I like Polyhymnia! Reminds me of A Swiftly Tilting Planet too, so bonus points there.
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] - also like! It has the same feeling as [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] but much stronger, like you could wrap yourself up in this name.
Vespertine or Vesperina - I prefer Vespertine or even [name_u]Vesper[/name_u]. A warm whisper of a name.
Xantippe - also not sure how to pronounce this one.
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] = I’d add it to the list!

I still love [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Faustine[/name_f] and [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] [name_f]Sonja[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. I know you love [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] but if baby doesn’t like it, she might know best. Perhaps [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] will be an approved substitute?

I’m not keen on Sylvestra but perhaps it’s because I really like [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]!

In the Tolkein showdown 2013, [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] wins over Tinunviel without question.

I just had to butt in here. I get what you mean about Rossetti now!!! I was looking for Pre-Raphaelite images [oh the hair and the dresses and oh] I found that one of the artists was called Rossetti!!! I put the two together and ping plop splash bang wallop it came to me. I am still not keen on the name but golly the association is amazing!

Thanks so much everyone! I have to say I’m delighted and super excited to see so much love for [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]. Definitely adding this one to the list.

[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]; thanks, happy to see your yes list!!

niteowl; Husband sadly said no to [name_f]Ondine[/name_f] as a first… he likes it for a middle though.

[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]; oh no, poor you! Chronic fatigue sounds exhausting (obviously, duh!). Lots of hugs to you. I’ve been loving [name_f]Ourania[/name_f] for soooo long, she’s my favourite muse, it’s always great to see her suggested. Build my confidence up a bit. Your suggestions were very helpful! Thanks for picking out your favourites!

[name_u]Angel[/name_u]; yes, someone did! how weird would it be to have a little you in the house? ;). Your comments… I knew you’d be championing [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]. Hesperia - Husband likes this better than Hespera, he thinks it’s more feminine, lighter or something. Eostre is very much melting snow and snowdrops to me. It’s one of those names so evocative of nature it almost blows my mind away, I can kind of smell the change in the air. Knew you’d back [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] too, and [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] even though she’s a bit farther down. I’m a bit sad you don’t like [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], but I do too have one slight issue with her. It’s different than yours, but still. It kind of bugs me that it’s a feminisation, and that the namesake is a man. I still love the name though, we’re just working on a pros and cons list. [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] - I don’t like dora names in general, [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] is the exception. I think dora works really well in this name, it fits, it’s not frilly or cutesy. Husband goes back and forth, but I’m working on it. Right now he’s yes, and he’s about to start reading the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_u]Rice[/name_u] novel. I play [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] songs for him. Nyneve - we go a bit back and forth and round in circles about which one we like the most. Nyneve and Niniane are the two we like the most. I’m glad you like [name_f]Ourania[/name_f], [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] and Polymnia even though you’re not crazy about them with [name_f]Dita[/name_f]. Thanks for all your comment, I’ll get back to the [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] issue at the bottom. Oh, and nice combos! I’m tucking them away for later use!

Niteowl; [name_f]Callisto[/name_f] is not a contender because she and Sylvestra are exactly the same in my head. So she’s one of Sylvestra’s middles. I do love [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], and Proserpina too, and the latter has been on my list but I like Polyhymnia/Polymnia more, and [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] is too close to [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] and [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]. Thanks for the suggestions though, they’re good ones! Lysithea is really pretty, middle material.

Elja; Thanks for comments! I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], but now that I think about it, I shouldn’t do both [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]. I guess…? [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] beats Eostre for me too, but Eostre is very very close behind her so if we decide to use [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] as a middle I’d be happy to have Eostre as a first. And she’s a Germanic/Norse [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] which makes her interesting… [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] - was that her name? That creepy creepy sick woman? I love Midsomer Murders but I haven’t seen it in a long time… [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], I forgot about [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] Buffay! She’s worse than the sea witch. And my children are more likely to watch Friends than TLM as I don’t like that movie. But… it might be a tough name to pull off. I mean, she will be a beauty but it might not be fun to have the name of a sea witch when sis has the name of the [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of beauty. I like both Vespertine and Vesperina too, I love names that end in -a (surprise!), but Vespertine is so fragile, like a snowflake. Again, thank you!

[name_f]Amy[/name_f]; read it all did you! OH, your [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] comment makes me happy. I know you’ve got [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] issues (as do I!), but thanks for supporting me. I agree about [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] and Tinuviel, will come back to that at the bottom. [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f], what I really love about this is how fierce and warrioresque she is. And she doesn’t end in an -a unlike almost all the other names on my list! Same goes for Vespertine. I know you love this one. Thanks for taking the time to chime in, hope you and [name_m]Dom[/name_m] had fun yesterday!

Sorceress; thanks for commenting on all, and for a top five! Great!

[name_f]Pernille[/name_f]; not a Tolkien girl? Hmm… Isn’t Ylva as a nn fantastic? I’m still patting myself on the shoulder over that one. [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f], you’re spot on. It’s very strong and capable which I adore. [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], Husband is the one with [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] issues. I’m working on it, I’ve done it before… with [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] will work. I hope.

[name_f]Fey[/name_f]; muahaha, a bit to drink, eh? [name_u]Lucky[/name_u] you. Thanks for all the comments. You picked [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]! Whoa! I guess I was sleepy to when I posted, I can have more than one from each category, but I wanted at least one from each. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] feel very different even though they’re both watery. [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] might be more me. Nyneve almost feels like stealing from you… [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] - isn’t it the coolest thing? He brought it up! He loves [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]. And lots of other tragic names are used, like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]! [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucretia[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]. To mention a few. [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is amazing. HBC is amazing. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’m not the biggest fan of how she portrayed [name_f]Bella[/name_f] in the movies, she was good. And everything she does is magic. Like wearing mismatched shoes. You’ve been super helpful, love reading your thoughts. Especially the [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] comment here, it makes perfect sense. She has to live in the world where other girls watch TLM and know the sea witch’s name. Good point. Thanks so much for all your comments, and for the lists.

Whirlie; you’re so cute! Teehee!! Oooh, [name_f]Mia[/name_f] for [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]! I hadn’t even thought about that one. So cute, I love [name_f]Mia[/name_f]! Oh My Goodness, you’re so right about Libertas! And some of your comments had me laughing pretty hard. Husband’s not beardy - I wish he’d grow one! He’s a typical five day beard man. Thanks for the suggestions, I do love [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] but Husband does not.

[name_f]Tiff[/name_f]; I know! I swear I’m not trying to upset you though. [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] will be a middle, I love it so much and the namesake was smashing. [name_f]Ourania[/name_f]'s O-rah-nee-ah (long o). Haunting! That’s the best word to describe Vespertine. She feels like a haunting snow spirit or something.

[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]; I think you’re right. I’ll get back to it later, but there’s something about [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]. I’ve loved this name since I was a little child, and the only reason it hasn’t been on the list before was the surname thing. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], haha, time to say goodbye. I have that song in my head now… not a bad thing! Thanks for commenting on the names, the epic Greek name theme might be too much… I might just put Panda away for now. We’ll see. Polymnia, no, I don’t see polygamy! Not until now anyway. I just see most-adorable-nickname-ever ([name_f]Polly[/name_f]) and mnia (which I thought was [name_f]Mina[/name_f] as a child. Polymina. That’s what I see. I’m glad you like Hesperia, even though you like Vespertine more. I’m not sure which I like better, there is something strangely haunting and ethereal about Vespertine. It’s almost spooky, which I like.

[name_u]Lexie[/name_u]; yay! Another [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] fan! And I’m crazy excited that you like [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f], [name_f]Ourania[/name_f] and [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f]/[name_f]Ortensia[/name_f]. I was starting to feel down here…

Averella; thanks for commenting and picking your favourites! Yes, there will be a showdown… I love [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] though. My own little [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]. Sigh!!

[name_f]Meg[/name_f]; Meh, I don’t mind a little demon here and there. Thanks for the ranking, it’s very helpful! Interesting to see an actual ranking of all the names, haha!!

Sessha; your [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Ceri[/name_f]/Nuvi comments make sense, and I will address it shortly. To the rest of your comments! There are too many good A names. Too darn many… [name_f]Atalanta[/name_f] though… swoon! [name_f]Every[/name_f] time I see this name I die a little. I’m excited about your [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] comments, like I said to [name_f]Fey[/name_f], HBC rocks! Eostre - estrogen? I’m starting to think one of two things, either I’m very stupid or other people actually look for weird associations in names. Eostre and estrogen are so different. But I get what you say though. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see you liking Hesperia, it’s Husband’s choice. He feels it’s more feminine. Orithyia was on our list for two seconds but Husband doesn’t really want a name with th or ph sounds. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t ask me why. Nyneve, there is no clear right pronunciation as far as I know. It’s too old and too obscure. It’s ny-neev or ny-nih-vee as far as I’ve figured out (I think something like this), we use the former. I say [name_f]Ourania[/name_f] o-rah-nee-ah (long o at the beginning). The Italian way. Knew you’d be loving [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], glad to see you coming around to [name_f]Polly[/name_f] even though it’s not your favourite. Xantippe made me laugh! She’s off. Thanks so much for all the comments, and for the ranking. Oh, and for the [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] comments too! Yay!

[name_f]Dina[/name_f]; Thanks for the comments! [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], that’s how I feel when I see the name. It’s like a clear midnight sky so filled with stars it takes your breath away. For [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] I was thinking [name_m]Mori[/name_m], [name_u]Ori[/name_u], [name_f]Moa[/name_f], [name_m]Iggy[/name_m], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Mora[/name_f], [name_f]Moria[/name_f].

AiW; thank you! [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] does feel more right. Maybe because I have a feeling this baby is very fierce, headstrong and wild? I like that [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is easily recognisable as Tolkien too. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]'s obviously a [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] name.

Whirlie; aren’t his paintings gorgeous? [name_f]Venus[/name_f] Verticordia, [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], A Vision of [name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f], Lady [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]… The Blessed Damozel, La Ghirlandata… and my very favourite, [name_f]Beata[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. All so beautiful!

Okay, the [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] - Tinuviel - [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] triangle. I think I’m going to keep them all for now. Husband has in the past rejected the two last ones on several occasions. I love Tinuviel, the name is utter cuteness and beauty, the character is great, brave, loyal and tough, but, as several have pointed out, she is just as good in the middle. [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is more namelike which Husband enjoys, and she was a human being. I like that. She’s one of the best characters ever written, she’s got so much going on, emotions, bravery, guts, wisdom, love, strength. She’s captivating. And the name is a beauty all in itself. [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] is a cool goddess, but right now I’m willing to part with her. But I’m not going to quite yet. I will let them brew for a while and see what’s up!

… and the updated list as NB thought my post was too long…

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] (but might lose this one because of the whole she and [name_f]Trix[/name_f] are sisters in HP thing)
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
Hesperia
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
Vespertine

Ok, won’t comment on every one since I’ve done that already. Here’s my top 7 in order:

[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
Hesperia
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
Verspertine
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]

[name_f]Circe[/name_f] – You know I don’t like the rhymes here. She’s an excellent middle name

[name_m]Favorite[/name_m] to least favorite (somehow I missed [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] before). Those top four are pretty close for me.

[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
Vespertine
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
Hesperia
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]

Well, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is the lesser known [name_m]Black[/name_m] sister, but still, hardcore HP fans would probably go “hey, wait a minute”, lol. Another Midsomer Murder fan! Yay  I’ve got to tell you, that TV series might just be one of my favourite in the world, I don’t know what that says about me. I’m so over it now that [name_m]John[/name_m] Nettles isn’t the [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] anymore though. I’ve looked into it and her name actually wasn’t [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] but [name_f]Honoria[/name_f].

And a quick rating from favourite to least favourite:
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
Éowyn
Hesperia
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]/[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] (ah, so [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] is so beautiful! Though I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], I’m totally up for replacing her on spot #4 with [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] because of the [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]/[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] thing)
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
Vespertine
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Circe[/name_f] (I really like [name_f]Circe[/name_f], but I love her as a middle)
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f]

Well, I tried reading the books as a child and they just didn’t measure up to the greatness of other books I read at that time. I didn’t even finish. I am thinking about starting reading them now, but I’m kind of worried that the ship has sailed and I’m to filled with negatives as I also can’t stand the movies?..

But; names!
If you feel like you have a powerful, wild, fiesty one in there, my picks would be (and I weep for Nuvi as she isn’t one of them, but it’s okay. I’ll hold out for the next baby ;-));

[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]- this is just the perfect name for a headstrong “ain’t gonna let anyone bug me”- type of girl. I see dark, orangey clouds, full ocean storm, waves, pirateshipflags- the whole shabang. This also has a green feeling to me. I tie colors to feelings you see. I can’t quite explain it, but green’s my favorite color, so it’s only another plus! [name_f]Adore[/name_f] the nn [name_f]Moa[/name_f]!
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - the same as [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] just in a smaller scale and not as much piratey and cloudy as looking up at a starry sky with a full on thunder and lightning storm going on.
Sylvestra - this isn’t nearly as dark and out there powerful as the other two. It’s more the full moon reflected in a forrest lake and the silvery shimmer in the fur of a wolf lurking nearby. Still powerful, still wild, but in a more silent undertone kind of way. Ylva is amazing! (I’m considering it as a first, but my then there’s my commitment issues… Sigh)
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]- there’s definitely some devilishness going on here. [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] feels like a little rebel mermaid to me- and I love it! I hope you could get your husband to agree on it!

I also do think [name_f]Circe[/name_f] is a strong contender for a strong- willed baby, but I’m not quite clear what imagery I get from it. It sound badass, though!

I’m including the “safe ones” in my evaluation, cause I feel like it’s anyone’s game and they could all use a little push.

I’ll pull a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and rank them favorite to least:

[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]

[name_f]Circe[/name_f] - She’s a favorite, but as a middle, so it’s hard to know where to rank her.

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - without taking into account the A thing, which would veto her for me
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]
Vespertine
Hesperia
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] - any chance of spelling this one [name_f]Orania[/name_f] since that’s the pronunciation you’re using? I was under the impression that [name_f]Ourania[/name_f] is pronounced exactly like [name_f]Urania[/name_f], which makes it utterly unusable for me. [name_f]Orania[/name_f], on the other hand, has a rich and beautiful sound and could rank up with [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f].

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - prefer [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] to [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] - OK
[name_f]Circe[/name_f] - OK
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - lovely
[name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] - nice name
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] - nice name
Hesperia - OK, prefer Hespera
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - love
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - nice name
[name_f]Ourania[/name_f] - like
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] - lovely
Vespertine - OK
