A Question About Betsy

I’m due in [name]April[/name] with my second, and I’m only just now seriously looking at baby names. My husband and I do not know the gender, but I just get this feeling that it’s a girl, so I’m having a lot of fun looking at girl names.

Anyway, I think the name [name]Betsy[/name] is really cute. I’ve only ever met one, and she is only an acquaintance, but she is sweet, and I love the idea of using the name. The only problem is my surname. It rhymes with White, and I’m afraid when the names are used together it is too reminiscent of [name]Betty[/name] White.

Would this dissuade you from using a name you like? [name]Do[/name] you even think it is that big a deal? I’m going to be honest, I’m not completely sold on [name]Betsy[/name] yet. It’s not like I will never find a name I love as much (and I don’t even know if little baby is a girl!), but I just wanted to ask since I could see myself using it.

Firsty, congrats on your little 'un

I don’t think this is too much of a problem, [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Betsy[/name] has a different ring to it than [name]Betty[/name] and as your surname isn’t actually White, I say go for it! [name]Betsy[/name] is super cute and I’d love to meet one!

I think it would be fine, and [name]Betty[/name] White is pretty cool imo. I love [name]Betsy[/name], and would love to meet one.

Thanks, this is making me feel a little better about it. The only thing is, I should have never mentioned it to my husband! He didn’t notice anything weird about it at all, until I brought it up. Now he can’t un-hear the similarities.

I actually know an [name]Elizabeth[/name] White who goes by [name]Betsy[/name] within her family. Very well-adjusted individual. I think it’s sweet, and [name]Betty[/name] White is fabulous anyway. Why not go with a longer “bet” name - [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Bettina[/name], [name]Bethany[/name], Betony - and use [name]Betsy[/name] as a nick?

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Betsy[/name]!! It sounds awful with our last name, otherwise I would have used it. I think you could use a longer first name with the nn [name]Betsy[/name], that might help distance the connection to [name]Betty[/name] White for your husband. For what its worth, I think [name]Betsy[/name] White is cute.

I really like [name]Betsy[/name]. I knew a lovely sweet girl named [name]Betsy[/name] once, so it has an nice association for me. There’s also [name]Betsy[/name] [name]Johnson[/name] who’s crazy and creative. If your last name is something like [name]Wright[/name], [name]Betsy[/name] [name]Wright[/name] is different enough from [name]Betty[/name] White, I think, that you don’t immediately make the connection.

I love love [name]Betsy[/name]!! [name]Betsy[/name] [name]Johnson[/name] is my favorite woman!!! but i love old people names!! like [name]Fern[/name],[name]Jean[/name],[name]Irene[/name] so on

I don’t really like any of the longer names for [name]Betsy[/name]. Generally, I don’t like to give longer names if I intend to use the nickname (I know a lot of people dislike this, sorry).

I don’t know who [name]Betsy[/name] [name]Johnson[/name] is, so that doesn’t really sway me one way or the other. Thanks for all the input. I was actually worried that [name]Betsy[/name] would be unpopular, since it’s a bit “dated”

I agree with everyone else so far. [name]Betty[/name] White is awesome, but [name]Betsy[/name] is a whole different name and, like others said, isn’t White. I don’t like [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Betsy[/name] so I think [name]Betsy[/name] is great on it’s own. It’s so unusual nowadays and I’d be delighted to meet one.

[name]Betty[/name] White is an amazing power-house of a women.
[name]Betsy[/name] “[name]Wright[/name]” feels like a very different to me.
As long as you like [name]Betty[/name] White I wouldn’t worry so much about the similarities that someone might make. If you love [name]Betsy[/name] use it.

I just voted on your poll, and if I’m being honest, I think you have other names that are better than [name]Betsy[/name]. I would use [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Evie[/name], and [name]Ruby[/name] over [name]Betsy[/name] in a heartbeat! But if you really like the name and decide to use it, I don’t see anything wrong with it (that is, if you can get your husband back on board!)
